Book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Canadian Arctic

Download or read book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Canadian Arctic written by Jake C. Rice and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A national science advisory meeting was held June 14-17, 2011 at the Delta Hotel in Winnipeg. The primary objective of this peer-review meeting was to identify marine Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) in the Canadian Arctic using Fisheries and Oceans Canada EBSA Criteria. A primary working paper summarised the information from a large number of sources and provided the basis for the related science advice. In addition, meeting participants provided further supplementary information. Once the relevant Arctic EBSAs were identified, their national or global significance was determined. This Arctic EBSA exercise is part of Canada's ongoing commitment to building a national network of marine protected areas.

Book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas in the Bay of Fundy Gulf of Maine

Download or read book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas in the Bay of Fundy Gulf of Maine written by M.-I. Buzeta and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is meant as a planning tool for managers who must consider the management of a number of present and proposed habitat-altering activities prosecuted in these areas. Based on the fact that Head Harbour / West Isles / The Passages were identified as EBSAs because of their benthic habitat attributes, such activities pose an elevated concern. The consensus of workshop participants was to recommend the application of protection measures for Head Harbour / West Isles / The Passages.":--from abstract.

Book Seamounts

Download or read book Seamounts written by Tony J. Pitcher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seamounts are ubiquitous undersea mountains rising from the ocean seafloor that do not reach the surface. There are likely many hundreds of thousands of seamounts, they are usually formed from volcanoes in the deep sea and are defined by oceanographers as independent features that rise to at least 0.5 km above the seafloor, although smaller features may have the same origin. This book follows a logical progression from geological and physical processes, ecology, biology and biogeography, to exploitation, management and conservation concerns. In 21 Chapters written by 57 of the world’s leading seamount experts, the book reviews all aspects of their geology, ecology, biology, exploitation, conservation and management. In Section I of this book, several detection and estimation techniques for tallying seamounts are reviewed, along with a history of seamount research. This book represents a unique and fresh synthesis of knowledge of seamounts and their biota and is an essential reference work on the topic. It is an essential purchase for all fisheries scientists and managers, fish biologists, marine biologists and ecologists, environmental scientists, conservation biologists and oceanographers. It will also be of interest to members of fish and wildlife agencies and government departments covering conservation and management. Supplementary material is available at: www.seamountsbook.info

Book Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas of the Scotian Shelf and Environs

Download or read book Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas of the Scotian Shelf and Environs written by Penny Doherty and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific expert opinion was gathered to contribute to the identification of ecologically and biologically significant areas (EBSAs) on the Scotian Shelf. Participants were asked to identify areas of particularly high ecological significance based on the EBSA criteria (uniqueness, aggregation, fitness consequences, naturalness, resilience), delineate the approximate boundaries of each area on a map, and provide justification for selecting each area. In addition, interviews with scientific experts were conducted to help fill gaps related to EBSA identification that were identified.

Book Reassessment of the Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Pacific Northern Shelf Bioregion

Download or read book Reassessment of the Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Pacific Northern Shelf Bioregion written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "DFO has developed guidance for the identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs), and has endorsed the scientific criteria used by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) for identifying EBSAs. EBSAs in the Pacific Northern Shelf Bioregion (NSB) were identified in 2006 and peer reviewed in 2012. DFO Oceans Sector of the Ecosystems Management Branch has requested DFO Science to review previously identified EBSAs in the NSB using available biological data. The information arising from this Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat Regional Peer Review can be used to support the refinement of existing EBSA boundaries, and help to inform MPA network planning in the NSB, including the Pacific North Coast Integrated Management Area Plan"--Context, p.
