Download or read book Report on the Progress of Recovery Strategy Implementation for the Western Brook Lamprey Morrison Creek Population Lampetra Richardsoni in Canada for the Period 2007 2015 written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Western Brook Lamprey - Morrison Creek Population (Lampetra richardsoni), hereafter referred to as Morrison Creek Lamprey, was assessed by COSEWIC as Threatened in April 1999. In May 2000, the species' status was re-examined by COSEWIC and designated Endangered, and subsequently listed under the Species at Risk Act as Endangered in June 2003. In July of 2007 the final Recovery Strategy for the Morrison Creek Lamprey (Lampetra richardsoni var. marifuga) in Canada (NRTMCL 2007) was posted to the Species at Risk Public Registry. An updated COSEWIC assessment in 2010 confirmed the species' status as Endangered. The recovery goal as identified in the Recovery Strategy for this species is to "secure its long-term viability within its natural range." This report documents the progress of Recovery Strategy implementation for Morrison Creek Lamprey. It summarizes progress that Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Province of British Columbia's Ministry of Environment, and other interested parties have made towards achieving the goal and objectives set out in the Recovery Strategy including: conducting new research and monitoring activities (including advancing studies to support the identification of critical habitat); and completing management activities that help Canadians reduce impacts on, and better understand the threats to, Morrison Creek Lamprey"--Executive summary.

Book Information to Support the Identification of Critical Habitat for the Morrison Creek Lamprey Lampetra Richardsoni Var Marifuga

Download or read book Information to Support the Identification of Critical Habitat for the Morrison Creek Lamprey Lampetra Richardsoni Var Marifuga written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical habitat is proposed for the Morrison Creek Lamprey in Morrison Creek, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The Morrison Creek Lamprey is currently listed as Endangered in Schedule 1 of the Species at Risk Act. The Morrison Creek Lamprey is endemic to Morrison Creek and any habitat that is critical for the survival and recovery for this species, must be afforded protection. Given the small size of the Morrison Creek drainage, the distribution of habitats for various life stages of the Morrison Creek Lamprey, the importance of consistent cold water to the continued survival of the species within the creek, and the extreme endemism of this species the critical habitat for the Morrison Creek Lamprey is recommended as the headwaters for the Morrison Creek watershed, Morrison Creek and Arden Creek in its entirety, and a riparian area of between 10 and 30 metres.

Book Summary of 2011 2021 Trap Data for the Endangered Morrison Creek Lamprey Lampetra Richardsoni

Download or read book Summary of 2011 2021 Trap Data for the Endangered Morrison Creek Lamprey Lampetra Richardsoni written by Joy Wade and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This document describes sampling activities and summarizes results from 2011 to 2021 trapping surveys of Morison Creek Lamprey, a unique population of Western Brook Lamprey (Lampetra richardsoni). Morrison Creek Lamprey is an endangered species at risk, present only in the Morrison Creek watershed in Courtenay, British Columbia. The trapping activities reported here not only help to monitor the population, but have also provided an opportunity to identify conservation concerns and protect the species and its habitat. The data provided in this document shows persistence of the population within its range, and should not be used as an indicator of population abundance or relative abundance"--Abstract, page vi.

Book Morrison Creek Lamprey Lampetra Richardsoni Trapping Survey June 2017

Download or read book Morrison Creek Lamprey Lampetra Richardsoni Trapping Survey June 2017 written by Joy Wade and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Passive downstream traps were placed in the main stem and headwaters of Morrison Creek, Courtenay, BC as a part of ongoing monitoring of Morrison Creek Lamprey, a federally-listed endangered lamprey species found only in the Morrison Creek watershed. The total numbers of lamprey trapped were low; however, they are comparable to the results of other trapping studies since 2011. Although methods are the same, catches remain much lower than those reported in the late 1970s and 1980s when the population was discovered. The causes of this decline in catch are unknown. Recommendations are to continue monitoring the population both in the main stem and headwaters through trapping studies and, using our best knowledge, ensure the habitat is maintained in a manner which supports the functions of the population and mitigates the effects of harm"--Abstract, page v.

Book Global Variation in the Thermal Tolerances of Lamprey

Download or read book Global Variation in the Thermal Tolerances of Lamprey written by Joy Wade and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The degree to which freshwater fishes are vulnerable to climate change is dependant on a species' tolerance to change, and the magnitude of the change. Freshwater fishes are often highly sensitive to their thermal environments, especially those that are range restricted, which limits dispersal ability to thermal refugia. Understanding the thermal tolerances for species is therefore necessary to determine their potential vulnerability to climate change, and inform potential conservation management decisions for species. Lamprey, which evolved hundreds of millions of years ago have a global distribution in both freshwater and marine habitats. Despite variation in distribution, climate change has been identified as potential threat across all species, yet the degree of that impact is not fully understood. This is particularly concerning for lamprey species already considered at risk of extinction, such as the Western Brook Lamprey, Morrison Creek population (Lampetra richardsoni) and the Vancouver Lamprey (Entosphenus macrostomus) in British Columbia, where nothing is known about the thermal tolerances of these species. A literature review was therefore conducted to understand thermal tolerances for lamprey globally. Despite their global distribution and evolutionary history the range of variation between species is fairly narrow and can be used to infer likely thermal tolerances for at risk lamprey in British Columbia"--Abstract, page iv.

Book Opportunistic Observations of Nest Building and Spawning of the Endangered Western Brook Lamprey Morrison Creek Population Lampetra Richardsoni

Download or read book Opportunistic Observations of Nest Building and Spawning of the Endangered Western Brook Lamprey Morrison Creek Population Lampetra Richardsoni written by Joy Wade and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Western Brook Lamprey (Lampetra richardsoni), Morrison Creek population is an endangered species, endemic to the Morrison Creek watershed in Courtenay, British Columbia. Despite the risk of extinction the species is currently facing, many knowledge gaps still exist which may limit recovery or conservation efforts. Therefore, basic habitat and biological data were collected in 2021 from lamprey actively spawning in Morrison Creek to help better inform the habitat requirements for nest building and spawning. Specifically, this report documents the conditions under which lamprey were observed nest building or spawning and provides recommendations for future research"--Abstract, page v.

Book Downstream Movement of Lampreys and Fishes in the Carp Lake River Michigan

Download or read book Downstream Movement of Lampreys and Fishes in the Carp Lake River Michigan written by Vernon Calvert Applegate and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inclined-screen trap was installed on the Carp Lake River, Emmett County, Michigan, in the spring of 1948 and has been in almost continuous operation since that time. The major goal of this project--a precise determination of the length of the larval life of the sea lamprey--was not attained because of the contamination of the stream above the dam with spawning lampreys. The lampreys and other fishes collected in the trap did, however, provide extensive and valuable biological information. The present report documents much of the information, largely in tabular form, accumulated over the operating seasons, 1948-49 through 1957-58; the amount of detail has been varied according to the importance of the topic under consideration or the amount required to bring out a particular point.

Book Conservation Biology of the Lampetra Satellite Species of Western North America with a Focus on Western Brook Lamprey L Richardsoni

Download or read book Conservation Biology of the Lampetra Satellite Species of Western North America with a Focus on Western Brook Lamprey L Richardsoni written by Benjamin J. Clemens and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Satellite species are composed of one parasitic lamprey that gives rise to nonparasitic lamprey species. The Lampetra satellite species of western North America are composed of three species: the anadromous Western River Lamprey (WRL) L. ayresii and two species of freshwater-resident, non-parasitic brook lampreys, the Western Brook Lamprey (WBL) L. richardsoni and Pacific Brook Lamprey (PBL) L. pacifica. The biology of these species has many information gaps, which makes assessing conservation status and identifying conservation actions challenging. We have synthesized the information from the literature to provide an understanding of the biology, threats, monitoring needs, and conservation of the Lampetra species of western North America, focusing on WBL. The three lampreys in the Lampetra satellite species, being small, exhibit relatively weak swimming abilities and undertake short movements within a water body. As such, they may be impacted by passage barriers. Whereas anadromous lampreys are predicted to migrate poleward in a changing climate, WBL and PBL will not be able to readily change their distributions, and so will likely be significantly impacted by climate change, making passage increasingly important for their conservation. Distribution monitoring and studies focused on understanding their spawning migrations and passage requirements will be essential to inform conservation"--Abstract, page v.
