Book excerpt: Cette recherche a pour but d'identifier les déterminants de l'intention de pratiquer de l'activité physique chez les travailleurs-parents d'au moins un enfant de cinq ans et moins. Les variables à l'étude sont principalement issues de la théorie du comportement planifié (TCP). La recherche comporte une phase qualitative et une autre quantitative. Les questionnaires ont été distribués par l'entremise des garderies à contribution réduite de la région de Chaudière-Appalaches. Les analyses de régression logistique indiquent que seulement 16 répondants sur 69, soit 23 %, ont une très forte intention de pratiquer de l'activité physique. Aussi, deux variables permettent d'expliquer 86 % de la variance de l'intention du comportement étudié. Plus précisément, 86 % de la variance de l'intention de pratiquer au moins 150 minutes d'activités physiques, d'intensité modérée à élevée par semaine au cours des six prochains mois, est expliquée par la perception de contrôle (PC) et la régularité perçue chez la population à l'étude. Les variables sociodémographiques ne se sont pas révélées comme étant associées à l'intention. Ces résultats pourraient être utilisés pour définir le contenu d'interventions visant à motiver les parents des jeunes enfants à être encore plus actifs. Des pistes de recherche visant à mieux comprendre les déterminants de l'activité physique chez les travailleurs-parents sont suggérées.

Selon l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), les enfants âgés de 5 à 17 ans devraient pratiquer chaque jour, au minimum, 60 minutes d'activité physique. Dans les premières années de vie, le comportement des parents a un impact sur les habitudes de vie de l'enfant. L'investissement parental dans la pratique d'activité physique chez l'enfant semble s'accentuer lorsque les parents connaissent les recommandations de santé publique et les nombreux bienfaits de l'activité physique, qu'ils encouragent et soutiennent leurs enfants dans leur activité de loisir. Objectif : l'objectif principal de cette étude est de décrire les représentations parentales concernant l'activité physique des enfants âgés de 6 à 12 ans afin d'explorer l'influence des parents dans la pratique régulière d'activité physique chez l'enfant. Méthode : une étude qualitative a été menée auprès de parents d'enfant âgés de 6 à 12 ans, recrutés directement lors de consultation de médecine générale et par effet « boule de neige ». L'échantillon a été constitué selon la technique d'échantillonnage raisonné. Des entretiens individuels semi-dirigés ont été réalisés, entre mars 2019 et janvier 2020, par enregistrement audio et retranscription intégrale, puis ont fait l'objet d'une analyse par la méthode de théorisation ancrée, triangulée par les deux chercheuses. Résultats : au total, 14 parents ont été interrogés. La pratique d'activité physique de l'enfant est ressentie comme un plaisir, un besoin, un moyen d'apprentissage et de socialisation. La place de l'enfant est centrale au sein du foyer familial. L'enfant grandit dans un environnement, un milieu socio-économique et éducatif mise en place par ses parents. Les parents participent donc à l'initiation de la pratique d'activité physique chez l'enfant. Ils transmettent à leur enfant, dès le plus jeune âge, le goût et le plaisir de la pratique d'activité physique, malgré des difficultés, telles que le manque de temps, le poids financier ou encore la complexité de l'organisation familiale. La pratique régulière d'activité physique chez l'enfant est primordiale pour son bon développement psychomoteur et semble être une des clés à l'acquisition d'une bonne hygiène de vie, qui se pérennisera à l'âge adulte. Conclusion : le parent est le principal initiateur de la rencontre de l'enfant avec la pratique d'activité physique. Quant au médecin généraliste, il apparaît comme un interlocuteur privilégié dans l'éducation thérapeutique, en proposant si nécessaire une prescription d'activité physique adaptée. Cette alternative est à explorer et à généraliser à tous les enfants pour lutter contre la sédentarité croissante de la population.

Book excerpt: The economic boom of the 1990s veiled a grim reality: in addition to the growing gap between rich and poor, the gap between good and bad quality jobs was also expanding. The postwar prosperity of the mid-twentieth century had enabled millions of American workers to join the middle class, but as author Arne L. Kalleberg shows, by the 1970s this upward movement had slowed, in part due to the steady disappearance of secure, well-paying industrial jobs. Ever since, precarious employment has been on the rise—paying low wages, offering few benefits, and with virtually no long-term security. Today, the polarization between workers with higher skill levels and those with low skills and low wages is more entrenched than ever. Good Jobs, Bad Jobs traces this trend to large-scale transformations in the American labor market and the changing demographics of low-wage workers. Kalleberg draws on nearly four decades of survey data, as well as his own research, to evaluate trends in U.S. job quality and suggest ways to improve American labor market practices and social policies. Good Jobs, Bad Jobs provides an insightful analysis of how and why precarious employment is gaining ground in the labor market and the role these developments have played in the decline of the middle class. Kalleberg shows that by the 1970s, government deregulation, global competition, and the rise of the service sector gained traction, while institutional protections for workers—such as unions and minimum-wage legislation—weakened. Together, these forces marked the end of postwar security for American workers. The composition of the labor force also changed significantly; the number of dual-earner families increased, as did the share of the workforce comprised of women, non-white, and immigrant workers. Of these groups, blacks, Latinos, and immigrants remain concentrated in the most precarious and low-quality jobs, with educational attainment being the leading indicator of who will earn the highest wages and experience the most job security and highest levels of autonomy and control over their jobs and schedules. Kalleberg demonstrates, however, that building a better safety net—increasing government responsibility for worker health care and retirement, as well as strengthening unions—can go a long way toward redressing the effects of today’s volatile labor market. There is every reason to expect that the growth of precarious jobs—which already make up a significant share of the American job market—will continue. Good Jobs, Bad Jobs deftly shows that the decline in U.S. job quality is not the result of fluctuations in the business cycle, but rather the result of economic restructuring and the disappearance of institutional protections for workers. Only government, employers and labor working together on long-term strategies—including an expanded safety net, strengthened legal protections, and better training opportunities—can help reverse this trend.
