They had a girl and a boy and settled down in the City of San Antonio, Texas, to raise them. After surviving a terrible mid-life crisis, Gabriel was fired from his job as math teacher and assistant coach in the Catholic high school he attended as a teenager. Libertad and Leonardo, his children, were expelled from their school when they were found to be carrying knifes in their backpacks, a set up. Theresa suffered watching her home burn down, thinking it had been her fault. Everything in their home was believed to have burned to ashes. The forces of evil were defeated by the Infante family once again; however, the demons are relentless in their pursuit of the destruction of the Miracle weaver. A cunning evil spirit stalks now the Infante family and brings increasingly serious complications to their lives. All their important documents were stolen during the house fire and sold by a neighbor. Their identities were stolen and misused to the point that they end up penniless, homeless, unemployable, in deep debt, and even in jail, accused of crimes someone else committed in their names. While these troubles keep coming at Gabriel and Theresa, a peculiar character from Gabriel's infancy and early youth shows up in their lives. The old friend became an unscrupulous big bully who gets obsessed with beating Gabriel and making Theresa his at any cost. The stalking demon will use the mystic's old friend to force a deadly confrontation.

The first of these is that another way to treat disorders arising from the mind/brain may be to use the senses. This idea, which is at the core of psychosensory therapy, forms what the author considers the "third pillar" of trauma treatment (the first and second pillars being psychotherapy and psychopharmacology). Psychosensory therapy postulates that sensory input—for example, touch—creates extrasensory activity that alters brain function and the way we respond to stimuli. The second idea presented in this book is that traumatization is encoded in the amygdala only under special circumstances. Thus, by understanding what makes an individual resistant to traumatization we can offer a way of preventing it. The third idea is that traumatization occurs because we cannot find a haven during the event. This is the cornerstone of havening, the particular form of psychosensory therapy described in the book. Using evolutionary biological principles and recently published neuroscientific studies, this book outlines in detail how havening touch de-links the emotional experience from a trauma, essentially making it just an ordinary memory. Once done, the event no longer causes distress.

Book excerpt: In the pre-modern age in Europe, the architect built not merely with imagination, bricks and mortar, but with time, using vast quantities of duration as the means to erect monumental buildings that otherwise would have been impossible to achieve. Virtually all the great cathedrals of France and the rest of Europe were built by this deliberate practice, here given the name "Building-in-Time." It places an entirely new light on the major works of pre-modern Italy, from the Pisa cathedral group to the cathedrals of Milan, Venice and Siena, and from the monuments of fourteenth-century Florence to the new St Peter's. Even as this temporal regime was flourishing, the fifteenth-century Italian architect Leon Battista Alberti proposed a new one for architecture, in which time would ideally be excluded from the making of architecture ("Building-outside-Time"). Planning and building, which had always formed one fluid, imbricated process, were to be sharply divided, and the change that always came with time was to be excluded from architectural making.

Book excerpt: Beyond Expulsion is a history of Jewish-Christian interactions in early modern Strasbourg, a city from which the Jews had been expelled and banned from residence in the late fourteenth century. This study shows that the Jews who remained in the Alsatian countryside continued to maintain relationships with the city and its residents in the ensuing period. During most of the sixteenth century, Jews entered Strasbourg on a daily basis, where they participated in the city's markets, litigated in its courts, and shared their knowledge of Hebrew and Judaica with Protestant Reformers. By the end of the sixteenth century, Strasbourg became an increasingly orthodox Lutheran city, and city magistrates and religious leaders sought to curtail contact between Jews and Christians. This book unearths the active Jewish participation in early modern society, traces the impact of the Reformation on local Jews, discusses the meaning of tolerance, and describes the shifting boundaries that divided Jewish and Christian communities.
