Book Love Power and Gender in Seventeenth Century French Fairy Tales

Download or read book Love Power and Gender in Seventeenth Century French Fairy Tales written by Bronwyn Reddan and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love is a key ingredient in the stereotypical fairy-tale ending in which everyone lives happily ever after. This romantic formula continues to influence contemporary ideas about love and marriage, but it ignores the history of love as an emotion that shapes and is shaped by hierarchies of power including gender, class, education, and social status. This interdisciplinary study questions the idealization of love as the ultimate happy ending by showing how the conteuses, the women writers who dominated the first French fairy-tale vogue in the 1690s, used the fairy-tale genre to critique the power dynamics of courtship and marriage. Their tales do not sit comfortably in the fairy-tale canon as they explore the good, the bad, and the ugly effects of love and marriage on the lives of their heroines. Bronwyn Reddan argues that the conteuses' scripts for love emphasize the importance of gender in determining the "right" way to love in seventeenth-century France. Their version of fairy-tale love is historical and contingent rather than universal and timeless. This conversation about love compels revision of the happily-ever-after narrative and offers incisive commentary on the gendered scripts for the performance of love in courtship and marriage in seventeenth-century France.

Book Passion for Reason and Reason of Passion

Download or read book Passion for Reason and Reason of Passion written by Martin Weyl and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the devastations of the early 17th century, a new wish for order and authority arose in France, culminating with the reign of the young King Louis XIV. A new ideal type of human, utopian in character, emerged and was aspired to by artists and critics. This period, often seen in art history as a late form of baroque classicism or the result of absolutism, is presented in this book in a new light: that of contemporary motivations, aspirations and ideals. The changes, major in character, during this short but intense period were to have far-reaching effects on the course of the art world in France and in Europe as a whole.

Book Hospital Politics in Seventeenth Century France

Download or read book Hospital Politics in Seventeenth Century France written by Dr Tim McHugh and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth century witnessed profound reforms in the way French cities administered poor relief and charitable health care. New hospitals were built to confine the able bodied and existing hospitals sheltering the sick poor contracted new medical staff and shifted their focus towards offering more medical services. Whilst these moves have often been regarded as a coherent state led policy, recent scholarship has begun to question this assumption, and pick-up on more localised concerns, and resistance to centrally imposed policies. This book engages with these concerns, to investigate the links between charitable health care, poor relief, religion, national politics and urban social order in seventeenth-century France. In so doing it revises our understanding of the roles played in these issues by the crown and social elites, arguing that central government's social policy was conservative and largely reactive to pressure from local elites. It suggests that Louis XIV's policy regarding the reform of poor relief and the creation of General Hospitals in each town and city, as enshrined in the edict of 1662, was largely driven by the religious concerns of the kingdom's devout and the financial fears of the Parisian elites that their city hospitals were overburdened. Only after the Sun King's reign did central government begin to take a proactive role in administering poor relief and health care, utilizing urban charitable institutions to further its own political goals. By reintegrating the social aspirations of urban elites into the history of French poor relief, this book shows how the key role they played in the reform of hospitals, inspired by a mix of religious, economic and social motivations. It concludes that the state could be a reluctant participant in reform, until pressured into action by assisting elite groups pursuing their own goals.

Book Ruling Women Volume 1

Download or read book Ruling Women Volume 1 written by Derval Conroy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas.
