Book excerpt: Discover a compendium of knowledge on the idealist - INFP personality type As you explore this book, you will find the answer to a number of crucial questions: * How do idealists think and what do they feel? How do they make decisions? How do they solve problems? What makes them anxious? What do they fear? What irritates them? * Which personality types are they happy to encounter on their road through life and which ones do they avoid? What kind of friends, life partners and parents do they make? How do others perceive them? * What are their vocational predispositions? What sort of work environment allows them to function most effectively? Which careers best suit their personality type? * What are their strengths and what do they need to work on? How can they make the most of their potential and avoid pitfalls? * Which famous people correspond to the idealist's profile? * Which nation displays the most features characteristic of this personality type? This book is part of the ID16 Personality Types series. ID16 is a personality typology which draws on the theory developed by Carl Gustav Jung. Typologies formulated on the basis of Jung's theory are widely used in teaching, training, coaching and human resource management, as well as in career and relationship counselling. They also form a basis for numerous programmes supporting personal development and improving interpersonal relationships. The majority of global businesses employ Jungian personality tests as a standard tool in their recruitment procedures and vocational development processes. Book excerpt: First published in 1934, this book evaluates the characteristic doctrines of the idealism which dominated philosophy during the last century. This work is not a history and does not try to compete with any histories of idealism but it instead reaches an independent conclusion on certain philosophical problems by criticising what others have said.

Book excerpt: Nature, material and mental, knows no values. Yet it is evident that this alone does not mean that there are no values in reality, for it would be absurd to think that the system of objects which we call nature is the whole world of our life-experience. The fact that in physics and psychology a deliberate description and explanation of nature is going on, -does this not in itself involve the existence of an acting personality which, as such, can find no place in the system of nature?-from Science and IdealismAs a psychologist and an innovator of experimental psychology, Hugo M nsterberg was a powerful influence on thinking in both the medical and social arenas at the turn of the 20th century, developing practical applications of psychology to industry, medicine, education, the arts, and criminal investigation. Here, though, in this intriguing volume, M nsterberg discusses anxieties and misapprehensions that still afflict the scientific disciplines today.M nsterberg-in a transcription of an address given at Yale University in 1906-examines how a system that is "valueless" and orderly, like the methods of science, nevertheless does not negate the "chaos of experience" and feeling that characterizes human existence. No reliance upon science and technology, M nsterberg reassures us, can ever deny or lessen those qualities of our lives-morals, emotions, senses of beauty and justice-that we esteem most. Also available from Cosimo Classics: M nsterberg's The Eternal Life, Psychology and Life, Psychology and Social Sanity, The War and America, American Traits, and PsychotherapyOF INTEREST TO: readers of the philosophy of science, students of the culture wars

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Idealism: Philosophical Essays by Eight Members of the University of Oxford This volume originated in the conversations and discussions of a group of friends drawn together primarily by their membership in the Oxford Philosophical Society. The Society was started in the spring of 1898, and among some of the most regular attendants at its meetings a certain sympathy of view soon declared itself. In the course of two years the trend of opinion had grown so definite as to suggest to me the project of a volume of essays. Among those who seemed likely to contribute I circulated a programme which made it the object of our volume "to represent a tendency in contemporary thinking, to signalise one phase or aspect in the development of Oxford idealism." That tendency was summed up in a phrase which I thought I was originating at the time I wrote the programme, though it seems to have occurred independently to others. It is the phrase we have chosen for our title, "Personal Idealism." For me our volume fulfils the purpose with which it was projected so far as it develops and defends the principle of personality. Personality, one would have supposed, ought never to have needed special advocacy in this self-assertive country of ours. And yet by some of the leading thinkers of our day it has been neglected; while by others it has been bitterly attacked.
