Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ideal Passion Sonnets My lady ne'er hath given herself to me In mortal ways, nor on my eyes to hold Her image; in a flying marble fold Of Hellas once I saw eternity Flutter about her form; all nature she Inspirits, but round her being there is rolled The inextinguishable beauty old Of the far-shining mountains and the sea. Now all my manhood doth enrich her shrine, Where first the young boy stored all hope, all fear. Fortune and fame and love be never mine, Since, seeking those, to her I were less dear! Albeit she hides herself in the divine, Always and everywhere I feel her near. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Passion Flowers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Passion Flowers Classic Reprint written by Benjamin D. Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Passion Flowers I must add a few words about the sonnet a form of composition to which I am very partial. When I began to write quatorzains, I did not know that the sonnet of Petrarch set up for being the only correct one. I have adhered to that form in my Sonnets on the Way of the Cross, which I deem my best work in the present volume; but have not kept exclusively to it since, and do not mean to do so in the future. I believe the English language impor tant enough to have a sonnet of its own. The Shakspearian form is duly recognized. But Wordsworth is incomparably the greatest com poser of the sonnet that our literature can boast of; and he varies not only the minor system, but often the major too, and in a way that suits the genius of the English language. So, too, with Keats, that young giant of song, whose sonnets are among our very finest. I am quite content, then, to err in such company if error there be in my theory. Book Shakespeare s Sonnets Retold

Download or read book Shakespeare s Sonnets Retold written by William Shakespeare and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'James Anthony has done something I would have confidently stated to be impossible. He has "translated" Shakespeare’s sonnets and he has done so with an insolent, loveable charm ... A dazzling success’ – Stephen Fry Rediscover the greatest love poetry ever written Shall I compare you to a summer’s day? You’re more delightful, always shining strong; High winds blow hard on flowering buds in May, And summer never seems to last that long... Shakespeare’s sonnets are some of the nation’s favourite lines of verse, but the Elizabethan language can make it difficult to really understand them. Many guides offer to clarify the meaning, but lose the magic of the words by explaining them away. James Anthony has done something boldly different. He has rewritten the whole series of poems as sonnets using modern language, while retaining the rhythm and rhyme patterns that gives them such power. In doing so he breathes new life into the original poems and opens them up for a modern readership, demystifying Shakespeare’s eternal poetry with provocative new translations and delightful new lines. Presented as an attractive book with the original sonnets facing their new translations, this is a stunning collection of beautiful love poems, made new.
