Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ideal Passion Sonnets My lady ne'er hath given herself to me In mortal ways, nor on my eyes to hold Her image; in a flying marble fold Of Hellas once I saw eternity Flutter about her form; all nature she Inspirits, but round her being there is rolled The inextinguishable beauty old Of the far-shining mountains and the sea. Now all my manhood doth enrich her shrine, Where first the young boy stored all hope, all fear. Fortune and fame and love be never mine, Since, seeking those, to her I were less dear! Albeit she hides herself in the divine, Always and everywhere I feel her near. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Shakespeare s Sonnets Retold

Download or read book Shakespeare s Sonnets Retold written by William Shakespeare and published by Crown. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enlightening and entertaining collection of the most esteemed love poems in the English canon, retold in contemporary language everyone can understand James Anthony has long enjoyed poetry with a strict adherence to beat, rhythm, and rhyming patterns, which he likens to the very best pop songs. This drew him to the rewarding 14-line structure of Shakespeare’s sonnets, yet he often found their abstract language frustratingly unintelligible. One day, out of curiosity, he rewrote Sonnet 18—Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day—line-by-line, in the strict five-beat iambic pentameter and rhyming patterns of the original, but in a contemporary language a modern reader could easily understand. The meaning and sentiment—difficult to spot, initially—came to life, revealing new intricacies in the workings of Shakespeare's heart. And so, James embarked on a full-time, year-long project to rewrite all 154 of the Bard's eternal verses creating SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS, RETOLD. This collection of masterful reinterpretations brilliantly demystifies and breathes new life into Shakespeare's work, demonstrating the continued resonance of a playwright whose popularity remains over 400 years after his death. Now, the passion, heartbreak, deception, reconciliation, and mortality of Shakespeare’s originals can be understood by all, without the need to cross reference to an enjoyment-sapping study-guide. Coming with a foreword by Stephen Fry, this is a stunning collection of beautiful love poems made new.

Book The Self and the Sonnet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rajan Barrett
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2010-09-13
  • ISBN : 1443825417
  • Pages : 460 pages

Download or read book The Self and the Sonnet written by Rajan Barrett and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Self and the Sonnet is an interdisciplinary study which considers the sonnet, a near eight hundred year old form, and looks at the historical meanderings and the popularity of the form among cultures that are far removed from the location of its origin in Italy. The book tracks the notion of the self from its Platonic beginnings to the Postmodern, using insights from Charles Taylor, Brian Morris and Calvin O. Schrag so as to work out a model of the self. Jan Patočka’s phenomenological notions of the self and Chaos Theory are important cohesive elements in the composition of this model. A limit point in Mathematics is a point that is not in the set around which all the points cluster. The book looks at the self from the limit points of the body, mind, world and language. It analyzes sonnets which predominantly show a tendency to one of these limit points. However, it keeps in mind the other limit points as possibilities of a comprehensive analysis. The motivation for this body of research comes primarily from the notion of the sonnet being a form that initially exists along with the epic as canonical writers of literary epics also write sonnets. The historic and narrative moment of self in sonnet form calls for a questioning of both the self and the sonnet. The book tries to address the questions: ‘What changes in the notion of self prompt the origin and persistence of the sonnet across cultures?’ and ‘Why and how is this form compatible with a self that is postmodern and global?’ The Anglo-American sonnet, for the most, is addressed but cultures and their attendant forms are also addressed when considering the sonnet. The Arabic zajal, the Persian ghazal, the Chinese sonnet and the Korean Sijo-sonnet are forms that are touched upon along with the Indian postcolonial versions like the forms of the sonnet in Modern Indian Languages such as Bangla, Gujarati and Marathi.

Book Sonnet Sequences and Social Distinction in Renaissance England

Download or read book Sonnet Sequences and Social Distinction in Renaissance England written by Christopher Warley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s there has been a broad and vital reinterpretation of the nature of literary texts, a move away from formalism to a sense of literature as an aspect of social, economic, political, and cultural history. While the earliest New Historicist work was criticized for a narrow and anecdotal view of history, it also served as an important stimulus for post-structuralist, feminist, Marxist, and psychoanalytical work, which in turn has increasingly informed and redirected it. Recent writing on the nature of representation, the historical construction of gender and of the concept of identity itself, on theatre as a political and economic phenomenon, and on the ideologies of art generally, reveals the breadth of the field. Cambridge Studies in Renaissance Literature and Culture is designed to offer historically oriented studies of Renaissance literature and theatre which make use of the insights afforded by theoretical perspectives. The view of history envisioned is above all a view of our history, a reading of the Renaissance for and from our own time. Book jacket.
