Book Ideal Homes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ideal Homes Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ideal Homes Why does one house attract and another repel? In the first is an indefinable something called charm. In the second it is lacking. All skilled architects aim for it. Few achieve it. This something, or the lack of it, marks the difference between a mere house and a real home. The house that attracts is the one designed by an architect who has devoted years of thought and study to small homes. Unfortunately few skilled architects specialize in the field of the small home, so that in all our cities and towns are found houses devoid of architectural finish, wasteful of room, and inconveniently arranged - mere boxes pierced with windows. It is well worth the attention of economical people that we often save all and more than our commission for a client, in material used, and in utilizing every inch of space to the best advantage. Don't be misled on this point - it is not extravagance but economy to build from competent architect's plans. Our plans speak for themselves. They are the cream of the houses which we have designed in the last dozen years. Many of them have been photographed and reproduced in magazines circulating all over the country. They represent different architectural types and different materials, and every one of them has been worked over until the maximum of comfort and convenience has been secured at a minimum of expense. We know individual homes, through and through. You will find houses which we have actually built all through the country, and we will gladly give you the names and addresses of the people who occupy them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ideal Homes in Garden Communities: A Book of Stock Plans Already, as the first fruit of the foundation of the original city, there are in England more than forty garden suburbs and industrial garden villages in the course of development. Private employers are setting the state a good example. Bourneville, Earswick, Woodlands and Port Sunlight, wonder fully beautiful towns, are examples. Of what is being done. In addition, numerous co-partnership societies have developed admirable suburbs. In Australia and India great capitals have been started along similar lines. A world-wide competi tion for the plan of the former was won by an American. In this country there have already been some successful suburban and town developments. Forest Hills, New York, is a noteworthy instance of the utility, beauty, and, in a word, the far-seeing wisdom of the Garden City movement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arizona: The Land of Sunshine and Silver, Health and Prosperity, the Place for Ideal Homes All over the plateau regions snows fall, sometimes to great. Depth about the higher mountains, but in the lower valleys snow is rarely seen, save on the distant hill and mountain tops. And even at the coldest of the elevated regions there is not felt the same discomfort in our-dry cold, as in the damp cold of even temperature elsewhere. Though the summer rains of July and August are sufficient for grazing, purposes, sunshine rarely fails a day. Even in the plateau regions, where the rain supply suffices for agricultural needs, and at the mountains, where rains fall in abundance daily, in season, no day is without its sun shining full and free, not merely behind the clouds. Not being able to obtain reports from all the Signal Service stations, we can only take Prescott, as it is a fair representative for the whole County in average. Book The Home Ideal Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Home Ideal Classic Reprint written by Margaret Greenleaf and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Ideal In the matter presented in this little book, I have given complete descriptive color schemes of the room shown in the photographs. The greater number of these rooms are of my own designing. These photographs and the suggested schemes will, I hope, be of practical service to the woman who is planning her house. Having been engaged in practical house decorating and furnishing, I have, of necessity looked fully into the question of what Finishes, Stains and Enamels would best produce the effects I had planned. The various dull finish stains, as well as the eggshell and the high gloss ivory white enamel, with the many other unique finishes, all made by Chicago Varnish Company, have given to me and to my clients complete satisfaction. I wish this book also to be a grateful acknowledgment that I have been able through their goods, to obtain artistic effects, which otherwise would have been impossible. These photographs show the successful combinations which may be reached through the medium of these softly toned and attractive wood stains, and exquisite enamels tor the standing woodwork of the room. In the magazine and newspaper work which I am conducting on these lines, I reach many people in remote districts, and from them I am in constant receipt of Letters. These prove that the materials manufactured and put upon the market by Chicago Varnish Company (which have been used by my advice) are enabling the man of moderate means, as well as others, to secure for himself a home with a beautiful interior. Book Homes of Character Classic Reprint

Download or read book Homes of Character Classic Reprint written by Lewis Manufacturing Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Homes of Character Your uneven, woodsy site wants a rambling-roofed, close-to-the ground design, one that will look as if it grew there without much human help, that will take kindly to clambering vines and winding cobblestone paths and rustic seats in unexpected nooks under the trees. On the other hand, such a design in its turn would be quite out of place on a level, smooth-shaven lawn with a few fine trees rising here and there and trim, formal garden plots. This kind ofa site demands the dignity, the pure, severe lines of the colonial or semi colonial home. The same advance in adaptation to actual artistic and practical needs is shown in modern interior arrangement. Gone is the parlor with its hideous contorted furniture, the custom of leaving the best room in the house utterly unused except on rare oc casions. Instead we find the living room, a place where the truly beautiful is also comfortable to live with, where nothing is too nice for everyday, and yet every thing speaks to the guest of a high standard of culture and comfort. This is the home ideal enshrined in the imagination of almost all families today. And this is the ideal which Lewis helps them to express. The public has been educated to demand this sort of home, but there are very few home builders. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Successful Houses Classic Reprint

Download or read book Successful Houses Classic Reprint written by Oliver Coleman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Houses There are comparatively few people who at one time or another do not have to face the problem of household furniture and decoration, and who do not at such times experience a sensation of comparative helplessness. To assist them there have been published two classes of books only, one in which the information is of the most shocking character, utterly devoid of taste, judgment or good sense; the other in which the laws are of a learned and technical character, but difficult of application by private persons in their own homes. Many of the latter class of publications are great authority, and could their intent be thoroughly absorbed would lead to radical improvements in the popular ideal of household decoration; but unfor tunately, besides the ponderous text, the illustrations are usually chosen from views of palaces and other great houses, and convey no suggestions to the discouraged housewife with a few hundred dollars to expend at most. The author in this volume has attempted to take another course, to describe, without formulae, certain undeniable principles, to indicate their application, and to illustrate the result by giving pictures of the interiors of eminently good houses. Some of these are inexpensive, some compara tively costly, but all are the homes of private citizens without any especial pretense of great wealth. The author is indebted for this opportunity to the series of articles published in The House Beautiful, entitled Successful Houses, for which the owners have allowed these photographs to be taken. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Home So many things go to the making of an ideal house, and yet how little do many of us concern our selves with its construction or with the reasons for the particular design of each separate part, the nature of the floors we walk over, the walls which protect us from the cold and heat, and the roofs that afford us shelter from the weather! It is but too true that the education of most of us includes but little study of architecture - the oldest of all the arts - Which throughout successive ages has been the outcome of progressive civilization. It is the one art upon which we are always depen dent, Whether in the secluded village or the crowded town. The lowly country cottage, the stately town house or castle, all in their place must have their suit able architectural form. In our public schools we are taught something of the dwellers in many lands With various climates, and but little of their dwellings.
