This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. He argues that urban landscapes can and must work harder. Urban landscapes can provide part of our energy needs, help cool our buildings and public spaces, help us make the most of our precious water. They can also help combat air pollution and reduce the likelihood of allergies and asthma. They can provide landscape materials and even contribute to our timber supply. Doug also advocates turning landscapes into a food source, and/or a perfumery, pharmacy, soap shop, or craft store. Doug has over 12 years of research in this book. He has spent years doing literature reviews, and many more years concocting, consuming, crafting, distilling, propagating, retting, sawing, sowing, and weaving its many recommendations. He has also travelled the length and width of California many times to interview the people and businesses already doing this incredible work. Regenerating Essential Goods and Services is not a manifesto. It is a user’s manual. You are the creative and energetic force that will ultimately drive sustainability and regeneration. Let’s go.

Book The Cocktail Parlor How Women Brought the Cocktail Home

Download or read book The Cocktail Parlor How Women Brought the Cocktail Home written by Nicola Nice and published by The Countryman Press. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet the hostesses who have shaped cocktail history, and learn how to make the drinks they loved. Throughout American history, women have helped propel what we know as classic cocktails—the Martini, the Manhattan, the Old-Fashioned, and more—into popular culture. But, often excluded from private clubs, women exercised this influence from the home, in their cocktail parlors. In The Cocktail Parlor, Dr. Nicola Nice, sociologist and spirits entrepreneur, gives women their long-overdue spotlight in cocktail history and shows how they still impact cocktail culture today. Journeying through the decades, this book profiles a diverse array of influential hostesses. With each historic era comes iconic recipes, featuring a total of 40 main cocktails and more than 100 variations that readers can make at home. Whether its happy hour punch a la Martha Washington or a Harlem Renaissance–inspired Green Skirt, readers will find that many of the ingredients and drinks they’re familiar with today wouldn’t be here without the hostesses who served them first.

Book Rightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow

Download or read book Rightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow written by Marni Jameson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gentle guide for helping readers “over a certain age” discover their best life by finding the right-sized home in the best location. Moving is no fun. Neither is getting rid of stuff. And both jobs get harder as we get older. So, when those over a certain age — say, in the last third of life — are looking to downsize and move all at the same time, many will conclude, “I’ll just stay put, thank you very much.” It’s not just the acquired possessions holding them back, but also the intangibles. Their memories, their family history, their identities are all in jeopardy, they think. And yet, that reluctance to lighten up, let go, and move on is commonly all that stands between them and a better life. Rightsize Today to Create Your Best Life Tomorrow will help this group of root-bound home dwellers cross the bridge between stuck in the past and a lighter, better future. It will encourage them to embrace the fact that now, when they’re no longer tethered to a school system or to a job they need to be near, is their chance to live where they want to live. Every section contains checklists: some soul-searching (should you or shouldn’t you move?), some practical (what every kitchen must have), and some logistical (where’s your happy place?), to help readers on their journey. Included are enlightening profiles of those who proactively changed their housing in the last third of their life. Whether they moved to a smaller place, remodeled their existing home, or even moved to a larger home, which one third do; whether they moved to a new city, to a senior community, or to a new home in the same neighborhood, they all reimagined their lives, re-evaluated their belongings and made a move toward a better and possibly their best life yet. To live your best life now requires an honest appraisal of who you are and who you’re becoming, where you are in your life and where you’re going or want to go. This book is designed to help those who are stuck explore what’s holding them back, and provide them with the insights, experiences, and courage to move forward.

Book Make your own cider Techniques for fermenting and flavoring your cider to make it delicious

Download or read book Make your own cider Techniques for fermenting and flavoring your cider to make it delicious written by and published by jideon francisco marques. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, and our love affair with apples and cider, started in 1998 — the year we moved onto our smallholding and watched the dormant centenarian apple trees introduce themselves. First came the pink swelling blossom buds, next the riot of white blossoms resplendent and humming with pollinators, then green leaves offering cool summer shade as the small fruits grew into the apples. We soon identified most of them — a Rome variety of some sort, something like a Granny Smith, a Golden Delicious, a Cox’s Orange Pippin, a few towering Gravensteins, and one that was grafted to both Gravenstein and Red Delicious. We were overwhelmed by the quantity: boxes and baskets of apples were stacked along the wall in our small kitchen. Apples seemed to tumble every which way as we tried to make them into sauce, dried rings, steamed juice, pies, crisps, and dumplings. By the next year we had a cider press, and a few years later we were captivated by cider. Surrounded by vineyards, we thought we would be the first cider house in our area. As it turned out, sauerkraut got in the way, but that is another story. Eager to learn as much as we could about growing apples for cider, we visited Nick Botner, described both as a hobby orchardist and a serious world-renowned botanical collector, at his farm in Yoncalla, Oregon, 2 hours north of our farm. We arrived, three of our four children in tow, one early November day, nearly 15 years ago. “Come into my farmhouse, we’ll talk,” Nick said as he invited the five of us in. His wife, Carla, sat us down to coffee and applesauce. A good cider apple contributes to one or more of four components: color, flavor, body, or bouquet. “What kind of apples do you recommend for hard cider?” Christopher ventured. We were sitting there gazing at him like initiates around a sage, waiting for the meaning of life. Or, at least the meaning of apples. “There are a lot of great apples for cider,” Nick said, and we both stared, pen in hand, waiting to scribble down the varieties that we’d never heard of, yet hoped to plant. He told us a good cider apple contributes to one or more of four components: color, flavor, body, or bouquet. He didn’t drop any variety names though. “Do you have the Redstreak?” Christopher asked hopefully. During the eighteenth century, this apple was believed to be the finest cider apple in England. At the time, cider made from the Redstreak commanded the highest prices. Its popularity had diminished by the end of the century and it’s believed that viruses may have killed the remaining trees. Now the apple is rare, even thought to be extinct, as breeders are unsure if the claimed Redstreaks are indeed the Redstreaks.
