Download or read book Building a Common Past written by Corinne Geering and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2019-11-11 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a kremlin, a fortified monastery or a wooden church in Russia become part of the heritage of the entire world? Corinne Geering traces the development of international cooperation in conservation since the 1960s, highlighting the role of experts and sites from the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation in UNESCO and ICOMOS. Despite the ideological divide, the notion of world heritage gained momentum in the decades following World War II. Divergent interests at the local, national and international levels had to be negotiated when shaping the Soviet and Russian cultural heritage displayed to the world. The socialist discourse of world heritage was re-evaluated during perestroika and re-integrated as UNESCO World Heritage in a new state and international order in the 1990s.

Book excerpt: Countless books and articles have traced the impact of colonialism and public policy on Canada's First Nations, but few have explored the impact of Aboriginal thought on public discourse and policy development in Canada. First Nations, First Thoughts brings together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal scholars who cut through the prevailing orthodoxy to reveal Indigenous thinkers and activists as a pervasive presence in diverse political, constitutional, and cultural debates and arenas, including urban spaces, historical texts, public policy, and cultural heritage preservation. This innovative, thought-provoking collection contributes to the decolonization process by encouraging us to imagine a stronger, fairer Canada in which Aboriginal self-government and expression can be fully realized.

Download or read book Art Cultural Heritage and the Market written by Valentina Vadi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-27 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of economic globalisation, do art and heritage matter? Once the domain of elitist practitioners and scholars, the governance of cultural heritage and the destiny of iconic artefacts have emerged as the new frontier of international law, making headlines and attracting the varied interests of academics and policy-makers, museum curators and collectors, human rights activists and investment lawyers and artists and economists, just to mention a few. The return of cultural artefacts to their legitimate owners, the recovery of underwater cultural heritage and the protection and promotion of artistic expressions are just some of the pressing issues addressed by this book. Contemporary intersections between art, cultural heritage and the market are complicated by a variety of ethical and legal issues, which often describe complex global relations. Should works of art be treated differently from other goods? What happens if a work of art, currently exhibited in a museum, turns out to have originally been looted? What is the relevant legal framework? What should be done with ancient shipwrecks filled with objects from former colonies? Should such objects be kept by the finders? Should they be returned to the country of origin? This book addresses these different questions while highlighting the complex interplay between legal and ethical issues in the context of cultural governance. The approach is mainly legal but interdisciplinary aspects are considered as well.

Book excerpt: The report studied and evaluated the Army's personnel system by developing a model which enabled Army personnel management to assess quantitatively the impact of policies on deployment and readiness. The report deals with the development and use of DISTRO-II(Distribution Rotation model), essentially a modification of the General Matrix Manipulator (GMM). DISTRO-II, which simulates additional factors affecting personnel distribution, more accurately models deployability characteristics of the Army than does either the GMM or DISTRO-1. The DISTRO-II model is described. Principles of the GMM and its interface with DISTRO-II are presented in detail. FORTRAN listings of DISTRO2 subroutines are provided.
