Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ichthyol: Its History, Properties, and Therapeutics The stones being of somewhat different character and composition, partly brownish, partly black-colored and of different specific weight, the oil, of course, is of somewhat different composition too. The Ichthyol Company being in possession of the pits which contain the different stones, therefore makes a careful selection among the different qual ities according to an adopted system. The crude oil thus excels by its homogeneity and high content of particularly combined sulphur, which forms the basic material for the several Ichthyol products. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introductory. Ichthyol, an organic sulphur preparation, was first brought into commerce in 1882 by Rudolf Schroter, the founder of the Ichthyol Company of Hamburg, under the trade-marked name "Ichthyol," and "Sulpho-Ichthyolicum" or "Sulpho-Ichthyolate." As a remedy, the preparation was originally introduced in skin diseases by the eminent dermatologist. Dr. P. G. Unna, of Hamburg, in 1882. Since then, however, its application has been widely extended, and to-day there is no remedy more universally prescribed for a wide variety of indications. "There is no remedy of more universal application than Ichthyol," observes the Medical Summary (Nov., 1905). "We frequently hear the expression, 'It cures everything from corns to consumption, ' as facetiously applied to and stigmatizing the vaunted expanse of some pretentious and flagrant nostrum. But here, in sober fact, we have a remedy that actually spans this tremendous range of therapeutic possibility and efficiency. Our confirmatory evidence runs from personal experience with intractable soft corns, so painful and stubborn of relief, to the word of the resident physician of a most noted hospital for consumptives that 'they use it almost without limit, both internally and externally.' "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century until the 1920s, authorities required San Francisco's Pesthouse to segregate the diseased from the rest of the city. Although the Pesthouse stood out of sight and largely out of mind, it existed at a vital nexus of civic life where issues of medicine, race, class, environment, morality, and citizenship entwined and played out. Guenter B. Risse places this forgotten institution within an emotional climate dominated by widespread public dread and disgust. In Driven by Fear, he analyzes the unique form of stigma generated by San Franciscans. Emotional states like xenophobia and racism played a part. Yet the phenomenon also included competing medical paradigms and unique economic needs that encouraged authorities to protect the city's reputation as a haven of health restoration. As Risse argues, public health history requires an understanding of irrational as well as rational motives. To that end he delves into the spectrum of emotions that drove extreme measures like segregation and isolation and fed psychological, ideological, and pragmatic urges to scapegoat and stereotype victims--particularly Chinese victims--of smallpox, leprosy, plague, and syphilis. Filling a significant gap in contemporary scholarship, Driven by Fear looks at the past to offer critical lessons for our age of bioterror threats and emerging infectious diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Medicated Empire, Timothy M. Yang explores the history of Japan's pharmaceutical industry in the early twentieth century through a close account of Hoshi Pharmaceuticals, one of East Asia's most influential drug companies from the late 1910s through the early 1950s. Focusing on Hoshi's connections to Japan's emerging nation-state and empire, and on the ways in which it embraced an ideology of modern medicine as a humanitarian endeavor for greater social good, Yang shows how the industry promoted a hygienic, middle-class culture that was part of Japan's national development and imperial expansion. Yang makes clear that the company's fortunes had less to do with scientific breakthroughs and medical innovations than with Japan's web of social, political, and economic relations. He lays bare Hoshi's business strategies and its connections with politicians and bureaucrats, and he describes how public health authorities dismissed many of its products as placebos at best and poisons at worst. Hoshi, like other pharmaceutical companies of the time, depended on resources and markets opened up, often violently, through colonization. Combining global histories of business, medicine, and imperialism, A Medicated Empire shows how the development of the pharmaceutical industry simultaneously supported and subverted regimes of public health at home and abroad.
