A copper clock hanging from the wall showed the hour of eleven, undoubtedly eleven o'clock in the night. The rain could be heard beating on the wooden roof overhead. They gaily discussed questions of marriage without letting out any word not modest. No, their talk was only about plans of the unmarried, and about droll events that had occurred during the wedding season. Occasionally they made a hint, perhaps a little too frank, on the delights of love. But love as understood by people of this stamp is always something wholesome and even in its crude state, it remains well-nigh chaste. Book Iceland Fisherman Classic Reprint

Download or read book Iceland Fisherman Classic Reprint written by Pierre Loti and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iceland Fisherman Which remain invariable, a yearning passion for beauty, and a limpid purity of style. He is as brilliant and realistic an impressionist as any of his countrymen; but he is more than all a senti mentalist, and never describes a scene without the accompanying emotion which unites it to his soul and ours. The poet's passion for beauty is his own; but his expression of it is essentially Gallic, as it is never divested of the personal rela tion to himself. An abstract rapture over the frozen beauties of a Greek vase could never have arisen from the heart of this fascinating egotist. Like all poets, his nature is as deep as a well and as re ective as the mirror of its surface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2002. In this title, Edward B. D'Auvergne chronicles the life of Pierre Loti, written with fervent sympathy. We journey with Loti from Brittany to Constantinople, from China to Morocco, from Egypt to Isfahan, breathing all the way the atmosphere and recognising the sources of the stories. Readers will find the biography of Pierre Loti as fascinating as the tales for which he is deservedly renowned. By writing of his life, D'Auvergne argues that those with an interest in literature may understand Loti better and, in turn, better understand his writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iceland, Greenland, Northern Norway, and the Faroe Islands lie on the edges of Western Europe, in an area long portrayed by travelers as remote and exotic - its nature harsh, its people reclusive. Since the middle of the eighteenth century, however, this marginalized region has gradually become part of modern Europe, a transformation that is narrated in Karen Oslund’s Iceland Imagined. This cultural and environmental history sweeps across the dramatic North Atlantic landscape, exploring its unusual geography, saga narratives, language, culture, and politics, and analyzing its emergence as a distinctive and symbolic part of Europe. The earliest visions of a wild frontier, filled with dangerous and unpredictable inhabitants, eventually gave way to images of beautiful, well-managed lands, inhabited by simple but virtuous people living close to nature. This transformation was accomplished by state-sponsored natural histories of Iceland which explained that the monsters described in medieval and Renaissance travel accounts did not really exist, and by artists who painted the Icelandic landscapes to reflect their fertile and regulated qualities. Literary scholars and linguists who came to Iceland and Greenland in the nineteenth century related the stories and the languages of the “wild North” to those of their home countries.
