Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper focuses on the European Monetary Union and the monetary policy framework in Iceland. It concludes that in terms of an exchange rate regime, the two most realistic options for Iceland are to continue with the existing arrangement or adopt a unilateral peg to the euro. However, it is argued that both options entail the need for enhancing the independence of the central bank, which will require reforming the Central Bank of Iceland Act. The paper also discusses a Scandinavian forecasting model for inflation in Iceland.

Book Gambling Debt

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Paul Durrenberger
  • Publisher : University Press of Colorado
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 1607323346
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Gambling Debt written by E. Paul Durrenberger and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2015 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gambling Debt is a game-changing contribution to the discussion of economic crises and neoliberal financial systems and strategies. Iceland’s 2008 financial collapse was the first case in a series of meltdowns, a warning of danger in the global order. This full-scale anthropology of financialization and the economic crisis broadly discusses this momentous bubble and burst and places it in theoretical, anthropological, and global historical context through descriptions of the complex developments leading to it and the larger social and cultural implications and consequences. Chapters from anthropologists, sociologists, historians, economists, and key local participants focus on the neoliberal policies—mainly the privatization of banks and fishery resources—that concentrated wealth among a select few, skewed the distribution of capital in a way that Iceland had never experienced before, and plunged the country into a full-scale economic crisis. Gambling Debt significantly raises the level of understanding and debate on the issues relevant to financial crises, painting a portrait of the meltdown from many points of view—from bankers to schoolchildren, from fishers in coastal villages to the urban poor and immigrants, and from artists to philosophers and other intellectuals. This book is for anyone interested in financial troubles and neoliberal politics as well as students and scholars of anthropology, sociology, economics, philosophy, political science, business, and ethics. Book The Intersection of International Law and Domestic Law

Download or read book The Intersection of International Law and Domestic Law written by Davíd Thór Björgvinsson and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the theoretical and practical issues relating to the intersection between domestic and international law? This important new book discusses how general theories, including monism and dualism, transpire in practice. The author examines several key areas: the rules relating to treaty making and the ratification of treatises, the doctrine of automatic incorporation and transformation, the direct effect of international norms in the domestic system, and a discussion of the principle of consistent interpretation. With a focus on the European Convention on Human Rights, the author concludes that, although traditional theories are still relevant, they fall short in grasping the complexity of the different ways in which the legislator and the courts have given effect to international law on the domestic level. Students and scholars of international and domestic law will find this book to be useful in their studies. It will also be of interest to academics, judges, and practicing lawyers.

Book Exchange Rate Based Stabilization

Download or read book Exchange Rate Based Stabilization written by Mr.A. Javier Hamann and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do exchange-rate-based stabilizations generate distinctive economic dynamics? To address this question, this paper identifies stabilization episodes using criteria that differ from those in previous empirical studies of exchange-rate-based stabilizations. We find that, while some differences can be detected between exchange-rate-based stabilizations and stabilizations where the exchange rate is not the anchor, the behavior of important variables does not appear to differ—especially output growth, which is good in both cases. There is also no evidence that fiscal discipline is enhanced by adopting an exchange-rate anchor, or that there are any systematic differences in the success records of stabilizations that use the exchange rate as a nominal anchor and those that do not.
