  • Publisher : Peter Lang

  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Mnemopoetics written by Valérie Bada and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its very beginning, African American drama has borne witness to the creative power of the slaves to maintain their human dignity as well as to fashion a complex culture of survival. If the memory of slavery has always been at the heart of the African American theatrical tradition, it is the way in which it is processed and inscribed that has developed and is still changing. Through the close reading and socio-historical analysis of eight plays from 1939 to 1996, the author seeks to unravel the fluctuating patterns in the shaping of the theatrical memory of slavery long after its abolition. To do so, she defines the concept and practice of mnemopoetics as the making of memory through imagination as well as the critical approaches that decipher and interpret cultural productions of memory. As a constellation of processes akin to the fluidity of memory, mnemopoetics blends creative representation and critical exploration to suggest that the cultural creation of memory necessarily entails a self-reflexive involvement with its own interpretation. If slavery embodies the deep, foundational memory of America, African American drama represents the open, communal space where it becomes possible to convert the irretrievable nature of a vicarious past into the redeeming function of a collective memory.

And now I don’t want.” When a cancer diagnosis, and then various treatments, eliminate libido, the echoes of love and desire in the form of memories remain. What happens to a life when sexual expression is lost? Enrique Fernández’s Pretty to Think So weaves questions of sex, mortality, and identity with a lyricism that readers will not soon forget.

Book Leadership in Unknown Waters

Download or read book Leadership in Unknown Waters written by Lisa Withrow and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leadership in Unknown Waters invites organizational leaders and their teams to engage powerful questions amidst ambiguity and uncertainty as they move from the-way-things-were to an emerging future. This liminality, a threshold in space and time allowing for transition from something old to something new, is fraught with both difficulty and opportunity. Leaders, teams, and individuals who navigate this space skillfully will land in surprisingly dynamic places, encountering stories, metaphors, and inspiration for traversing the threshold not only competently, but with curiosity and confidence. In this way, futures are created that are not possible with fear-based planning or "quick fixes". Withrow's method intersects the human imagination through a visual, living metaphor (water), with attention to space (liminality, or transitional space), and focus on role (leadership development) for powerful engagement with what organizational learning theorists call "the emerging future". Here, the theoretical meets the practical and research informs the "how to" and "why". Diving into unknown waters with tools and wisdom can create a better future for all who face change, whether within corporations, not-for-profit organizations, faith communities, family systems, or interpersonal relationships.

Book Semiotics of Friendship

Download or read book Semiotics of Friendship written by Claus Emmeche and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2025-01-27 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A friend should be able to be an attentive listener, which made semiotician Roland Barthes wonder in his intriguing dictionary of love, "cannot friendship be defined as a space with total sonority?". This volume takes on the encyclopedic task - in the sense of Umberto Eco, where an encyclopedia is a very complex sign - to explore friendship in detail, not only as a form of love but in all its complexity as a bond that connects people and forms communities. Semiotics, the study of signs and meaning-making, is used alongside insights from a wide range of friendship studies to create a far-reaching intellectual resonance, or sonority, around friendship as a central human experience. As a study of the significance of friendship, it presents findings from friendship research across the globe, enabling new ways of thinking about friends. It includes: key concepts from semiotics, sociology, anthropology, and other fields, briefly explained major models of friendship from antiquity to contemporary societies proverbs and sayings about friendship from Africa, America, Asia, and Europe stories about famous or forgotten friends from mythology, fiction, and real history summaries of research on friendship from selected academic disciplines bibliographical references for further studies

Book Wicked Messenger

Download or read book Wicked Messenger written by Mike Marqusee and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Dylan’s abrupt abandonment of overtly political songwriting in the mid-1960s caused an uproar among critics and fans. In Wicked Messenger, acclaimed cultural-political commentator Mike Marqusee advances the new thesis that Dylan did not drop politics from his songs but changed the manner of his critique to address the changing political and cultural climate and, more importantly, his own evolving aesthetic. Wicked Messenger is also a riveting political history of the United States in the 1960s. Tracing the development of the decade’s political and cultural dissent movements, Marqusee shows how their twists and turns were anticipated in the poetic aesthetic—anarchic, unaccountable, contradictory, punk— of Dylan's mid-sixties albums, as well as in his recent artistic ventures in Chronicles, Vol. I and Masked and Anonymous. Dylan’s anguished, self-obsessed, prickly artistic evolution, Marqusee asserts, was a deeply creative response to a deeply disturbing situation. "He can no longer tell the story straight," Marqusee concludes, "because any story told straight is a false one."
