Book ICE AND SNOW TERRAIN FEATURES McMURDO STATION ANTARCTICA

Download or read book ICE AND SNOW TERRAIN FEATURES McMURDO STATION ANTARCTICA written by R. A. Paige and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movement of the McMurdo Lobe of the Ross Ice Shelf causes pressure ridges, crevasses, and periodic calving that requires careful selection of runway sites and road routes to assure safe and long-term operations. Movement of the ice shelf between Pram Point and Williams Field varies from 230 to 281 feet per year. The probable critical thickness beyond which the ice shelf does not calve varies between 90 to 100 feet west of Williams Field to 50 or 60 feet near Pram Point. Hidden subsurface melt pools occur in the glacier ice at Outer Williams Field and, during summer, seriously hamper trafficability of the alternate ice runway at this location. Dangerous sea ice conditions are caused by late-season differential thinning and deterioration, seal breathing holes, hidden slush zones in deep snow, pressure ridges and flooded, downwarped areas of ice in the embayment south of McMurdo Station. Sea-ice-to-land and sea-ice-to-ice shelf ramps require almost constant repair to maintain the necessary over-ice road network. (Author).

Book On the Ice

Download or read book On the Ice written by Gretchen Legler and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2005 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "McMurdo Station, Antarctica, is home to eighty-mile-per-hour winds, minus seventy degree temperatures, and months of near-total darkness. Sent to Antarctica as an observer, Gretchen Legler tells the story of her season spent at McMurdo Station. Populated by people from all walks of life - bankers, MBAs, therapists, carpenters, scientists, laborers, and military brass - the individuals that Legler meets have gone to Antarctica to escape everything from parking tickets to angry spouses. Hoping to get away from the complexities of her own life, Legler arrives at McMurdo Station with the intention of researching the landscape; what she finds, instead, is a zany population of people." "Part sociological study, part historiography, and part love story, On the Ice is an exploration of one of the most unexplored places on earth and the people who are drawn to it."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Engineering Manual for McMurdo Station Revision

Download or read book Engineering Manual for McMurdo Station Revision written by C. R. Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents engineering methods and operational procedures that have proved successful in working with the terrain and environmental features in the vicinity of McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Experience, as well as directly applied research in the McMurdo area, has provided the basis for the manual. The information could have application to other areas having the characteristics discussed in this manual; however, the manual pertains specifically to McMurdo Station. Contents: Physiography of the McMurdo Area; McMurdo Ice Shelf; Sea-Ice Sheet; Properties of Snow, Ice, and Permafrost; Building Design and Maintenance; Utility Distribution Systems; Airfields and Roads; Ship Offloading Facilities; Pollution Control; Transportation and Construction Equipment; Materials for Low Temperature Use; Annotated References to Publications on Cold-Weather Construction.

Book Construction Maintenance and Operation of a Glacial Runway McMurdo Station Antarctica

Download or read book Construction Maintenance and Operation of a Glacial Runway McMurdo Station Antarctica written by George L. Blaisdell and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 7 February 1994, a C-141 departed Christchurch, New Zealand, and landed on the 3050 m (10,000-ft) Pegasus glacial ice runway, located on the Ross Ice Shelf 13 km (8 miles) south of McMurdo, Antarctica. This event marked the final test for a five-year development program to demonstrate the feasibility of a semipermanent glacial ice runway capable of supporting heavy wheeled aircraft at a site easily accessible to McMurdo. In the later phases of developing the glacial ice runway, numerous working flights of LC-130s operating on wheels (rather than skis) moved cargo more efficiently to the South Pole, and the LC-130 and a C-130 carried larger passenger loads to Christchurch. The primary benefit of the Pegasus runway to the U.S. Antarctic Program is its ability to support heavy wheeled aircraft for most of the period of mid-January through November. In the past, only ski-equipped aircraft could land in the McMurdo area during this time period. The Pegasus runway allows increased payloads for the LC-130 (an additional 3600-kg or 8000-lb takeoff weight when using wheels) and provides access for virtually any conventional aircraft. The technology for siting, constructing, maintaining, and operating such a runway is now well understood and is described in detail in this comprehensive report.

Book excerpt: The South Pole is a book by Roald Amundsen and it represents an interesting first-hand account of the Norwegian expedition's successful attempt to reach the South Pole in 1911. Amundsen spends a great deal of time talking about logistics and placing of depots in preparation for his polar attempt all the way from the preparation leading up to the initial sea voyage, the voyage itself and then the establishing of a camp at the Antarctic. Although they were lucky with the weather, and Amundsen attributed the success of the expedition to "good luck", it is obvious that the Norwegian expedition was well prepared and ready for the troubles ahead; the equipment, the sledges with well-trained dogs, the supply depots with seal meat at regular intervals along the route, the sunglasses to avoid snow blindness; it was all thought of in advance.

Download or read book Science and Stewardship in the Antarctic written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the negotiation of the International Protocol on Environmental Protection in 1991, those nations conducting scientific research programs in Antarctica face new challenges for stewardship of the southern continent and protection of its environment. Science and Stewardship in the Antarctic examines how the implementation of the 1991 agreement in the United States can be done in such a way to ensure the compatibility of scientific and environmental protection goals in this global laboratory. The book also addresses the potential for the new requirements both to benefit and harm research activities in Antarctica.
