Book Ibsen Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ibsen Classic Reprint written by Edmund Gosse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ibsen In these pages, where the space at my disposal was so small, I have not been willing to waste it by repeating the plots of any of those plays of Ibsen which are open to the English reader. It would please me best if this book might be read in connection with the final edition of Ibsen's Complete Dramatic Works, now being prepared by Mr. Archer. If we may judge of the whole work by those volumes of it which have already appeared, I have little hesitation in saying that no other foreign author of the second half of the nineteenth century has been so ably and exhaustively edited in English as Ibsen has been in this instance. Book The Works of Henrik Ibsen Brand Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Works of Henrik Ibsen Brand Classic Reprint written by Henrik Ibsen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Henrik Ibsen Brand The publisher, Hegel (head of the great Danish bous of Gyldendal), to whom Ibsen had been introduced by Bj6rnson, was somewhat sceptical of the success of a verse drama so unusual in style, so long, and so fiercely abusive of those to whom it was addressed. But upon its publication it instantly took the whole Scandinavian world by storm. Four editions appeared before the end of the year, the eleventh in 1889, and the sale is still steady to-day. At Stockholm, in 1885, it was even put upon the stage, for which it was never meant, crowded houses sitting through a performance, fifteen times re peated, which lasted nearly seven hours. Outside Scan dinavia, too, the author of Brand began to be named; it was the beginning of his European fame. In Germany, particularly, the passionate exaltation and masterful will which pervades it found quick response, after 1870, from a generation which had just watched the colossal shaping of the Empire, and was soon to recognise its secret ideal in the fibermensch of Nietzsche. No less than four verse translations appeared there between 1872 and 1882. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henrik Ibsen, 1828-1888: A Critical Biography The interest now taken, among English-speaking people, in the writings of Henrik Ibsen, seems to make it desirable that some extended account of his life and work should be placed within the reach of the public. I had for some time been contemplating the preparation of a critical essay upon the subject, when this work by Henrik Jaeger came into my hands, and I concluded to translate it instead of writing the original study of which I had at first thought. While Herr Jaeger's book, being addressed primarily to the Scandinavian public, - already familiar with Ibsen's writings, - is, in some respects, not exactly what would have been written with a strictly English-speaking audience in view, it seems, on the whole, to cover the ground fairly well and to be, for the most part, just and intelligible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Writings of Henrik Ibsen IN reading consecutively the whole series of Ih sen's dramas, one is apt to be seized with a kind of philosophic despair. The more radically you think of the problems of human existence, the more deeply you seek to penetrate them, the more ln soluble they seem to become. Of course I am aware that any final solution, even if possible, would not be desirable. It would be a calamity. Humanity would stagnate, grow torpid and indo lent; and its glorious evolution would be arrested, if each new generation were not confronted with urgent riddles, both abstract and concrete, clamour ing for solution. There is, 'however, no danger of our incurring degeneration and decay by guessing, once for all, the riddle of the Sphinx, and witness ing its plunge into the abysmal void. It is an evidence of our spiritual vitality that we have no. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ibsen in England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ibsen in England Classic Reprint written by Miriam A. Franc and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ibsen in England Since Ibsen has in uenced modern English drama as has no other single playwright, and since Ibsen aroused the most interesting controversy in the history of the modern English theatre, it is essential that the student of con temporary English drama should thoroughly understand the part that Ibsen played in the literary and theatrical England of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This thesis is the result of an attempt to gather together in a single volume the material necessary to an apprecia tion of Ibsen's place in the history of English drama. For much of the material on Gosse's introduction of Ibsen to England, I am indebted to F. C. Hansen's bac calaureate thesis on Ibsen in England, University of Wisconsin. In Dr. Lee M. Hollander's bibliography in Speeches and New Letters of Ibsen, there may be found a list of many of the translations, performances, and commentaries on Ibsen in England and America. As far as I have been able to ascertain, these have been the only detailed works on the subject of Ibsen in Eng land, and both Mr. Hansen and Dr. Hollander have limited themselves to only a portion of the field. Book IBSEN IN GERMANY 1870 1900 CL

Download or read book IBSEN IN GERMANY 1870 1900 CL written by William Henri Eller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ibsen in Germany, 1870-1900 If the opposition seems to be unduly stressed by the quota tions in the succeeding pages, this is not to be attributed to any predilection of the investigator for that point of view. The positive in uence of Ibsen is to be sought pri marily in the creative literature of the time, and its testi mony is abundant and eloquent enough. While the older generation and its supporters battled the new with words, the latter, as is always the case, was engrossed in practice rather than in verbal eloquence. In this practice Ibsen and the German appreciation of him are vindicated if that is at all necessary. In preference to paraphrasing various comments of a critical nature, I have given them verbatim. I have had two reasons in mind for such procedure: first, this method pre sents exactly what was written and allows immediate contact with the critic's point of view; second, the records them selves aid the reader to reconstruct the spirit of the epoch, das Kulturhistorische, which would be less tangible in my own and briefer phraseology. I have translated all citations because I hoped the thesis would be of interest to some who know little or nothing of the German and Norse idioms. For any who might desire the original statements, and I realize how acceptable they will be to some, I have included them in the Appendix.
