Download or read book IBM System 38 written by Coopers & Lybrand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The system/38 differs from conventional machines in a number of ways. The most important differences are o A database management system is integrated with the operating system. All data files are data base files. o Main memory and auxiliary storage (disk) are treated as one unit. Inter alia, this means that not only programs but also data files are paged into and out of main me mory. o All objects must be addressed via a library and by name; also the libraries themselves (namely via QSYS). The user has no way of reaching physical addresses (which he can't find out anyway). o Large parts of the operating systems are in microcode. o There is no assembler language. The unique features of the S/38 make it necessary for the auditor to put in some effort to learn how the system works. Otherwise he is likely to misunderstand important aspects of the data processing performed on the system. Some knowledge is also required to use the system's fea tures effectively for obtaining an understanding of the system and performing compliance and substantive tests on it. 2. Hardware Characteristics 2.1. General Information The IBM S/38 is a general purpose data processing system designed to provide ease of use, reliability, and an inte grated database. The system has a unique architecture with an integrated relational data base design that supports interactive workstation applications as well as traditional batch applications.

Book IBM i 6 1 Independent ASPs A Guide to Quick Implementation of Independent ASPs

Download or read book IBM i 6 1 Independent ASPs A Guide to Quick Implementation of Independent ASPs written by Scott Vetter and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2009-12-10 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IBM® Redbooks® publication explains how to configure and manage independent disk pool (IASP) functionality of IBM i 6.1. It is designed to help IBM technical professionals, business partners, and customers understand and implement independent disk pools in the IBM i 6.1. In addition, this publication provides the background information that is necessary to plan, implement, and customize this functionality to your particular environment. It provides guidance on running user applications with either application data or most application objects residing in an independent disk pool. Considering that you can also use independent disk pools in a cluster environment, this publication shows you the basic steps to make your independent disk pool switchable between two Power SystemsTM servers or a single server with multiple LPARs. Independent auxiliary storage pools have many business and technical advantages for Power Systems using IBM i. Not only are independent auxiliary storage pools (IASPs) easy to create and maintain, most applications can use them by simple work management changes. IASPs can provide immediate benefits to your enterprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IBM was the world’s leading provider of information technologies for much of the twentieth century. What made it so successful for such a long time, and what lessons can this iconic corporation teach present-day enterprises? James W. Cortada—a business historian who worked at IBM for many years—pinpoints the crucial role of IBM’s corporate culture. He provides an inside look at how this culture emerged and evolved over the course of nearly a century, bringing together the perspectives of employees, executives, and customers around the world. Through a series of case studies, Inside IBM explores the practices that built and reinforced organizational culture, including training of managers, employee benefits, company rituals, and the role of humor. It also considers the importance of material culture, such as coffee mugs and lapel pins. Cortada argues that IBM’s corporate culture aligned with its business imperatives for most of its history, allowing it to operate with a variety of stakeholders in mind and not simply prioritize stockholders. He identifies key lessons that managers can learn from IBM’s experience and apply in their own organizations today. This engaging and deeply researched book holds many insights for business historians, executives and managers concerned with stakeholder relations, professionals interested in corporate culture, and IBMers.
