Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The system/38 differs from conventional machines in a number of ways. The most important differences are o A database management system is integrated with the operating system. All data files are data base files. o Main memory and auxiliary storage (disk) are treated as one unit. Inter alia, this means that not only programs but also data files are paged into and out of main me mory. o All objects must be addressed via a library and by name; also the libraries themselves (namely via QSYS). The user has no way of reaching physical addresses (which he can't find out anyway). o Large parts of the operating systems are in microcode. o There is no assembler language. The unique features of the S/38 make it necessary for the auditor to put in some effort to learn how the system works. Otherwise he is likely to misunderstand important aspects of the data processing performed on the system. Some knowledge is also required to use the system's fea tures effectively for obtaining an understanding of the system and performing compliance and substantive tests on it. 2. Hardware Characteristics 2.1. General Information The IBM S/38 is a general purpose data processing system designed to provide ease of use, reliability, and an inte grated database. The system has a unique architecture with an integrated relational data base design that supports interactive workstation applications as well as traditional batch applications.

Book Capability Based Computer Systems

Download or read book Capability Based Computer Systems written by Henry M. Levy and published by Digital Press. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capability-Based Computer Systems focuses on computer programs and their capabilities. The text first elaborates capability- and object-based system concepts, including capability-based systems, object-based approach, and summary. The book then describes early descriptor architectures and explains the Burroughs B5000, Rice University Computer, and Basic Language Machine. The text also focuses on early capability architectures. Dennis and Van Horn's Supervisor; CAL-TSS System; MIT PDP-1 Timesharing System; and Chicago Magic Number Machine are discussed. The book then describes Plessey System 250, Cambridge CAP Computer, and Hydra System. The selection also discusses STAROS System and IBM System/38. STAROS object support and abstract type management, as well as IBM System/38 profiles and authority and programs/procedures, are described. The book highlights Intel iAPX 432, and then considers segment and objects, program execution, storage resources, and abstraction support. Problems related with capability-based architectures are also noted. The text is a good source for readers wanting to study computer programming.

Download or read book First Generation Mainframes written by Stephen H. Kaisler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes several different models of IBM computer systems, characterized by different data representations and instruction sets that strongly influenced computer system architecture in the 1950s and early 1960s. They focused on a common system architecture that allowed peripherals to be used on different systems, albeit with specific adapters. These systems were modular, which made them easy to manufacture, configure, and service. Computing with UNIVAC, they used reliable Williams Tubes for memory, and later introduced magnetic core memory. IBM developed its own magnetic tape drives and magnetic drums that were both faster and more reliable than UNIVAC’s peripherals. The first software systems that could reasonably be called “operating systems” enabled more efficient use of programmer time and system resources. The development of programming languages, notably FORTRAN, and assembly language processors, notably Autocoder, improved the productivity of programmers. In addition, IBM developed one of the finest product marketing, sales and servicing organizations in the world. The legacy of the IBM 700 series is found in their popular successors, the IBM 7000 Series, which will be described in a forthcoming volume.
