Book excerpt: Growing up, many of us have had fears that surfaced when the lights went out. For some of us they may still exist. The child in my rhyming book is very afraid of the monsters that lurk in the closet and under the bed. At first the child is terrified when the monsters come out. Soon the child realizes that the monsters do not want to harm him but rather play with the toys in the bedroom. But after the monsters mischievous playfulness begins to destroy the bedroom, the child overcomes his fears and takes charge of the situation forcing the monsters to clean up their mess and retreat to their hiding places. I hope you and your child enjoy my whimsical rhyming book "There's A Monster in My Closet."

Book Monsters in the Closet

Download or read book Monsters in the Closet written by Harry M. Benshoff and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monster in the Closet is a history of the horrors film that explores the genre's relationship to the social and cultural history of homosexuality in America. Drawing on a wide variety of films and primary source materials including censorship files, critical reviews, promotional materials, fanzines, men's magazines, and popular news weeklies, the book examines the historical figure of the movie monster in relation to various medical, psychological, religious and social models of homosexuality. While recent work within gay and lesbian studies has explored how the genetic tropes of the horror film intersect with popular culture's understanding of queerness, this is the first book to examine how the concept of the monster queer has evolved from era to era. From the gay and lesbian sensibilities encoded into the form and content of the classical Hollywood horror film, to recent films which play upon AIDS-related fears. Monster in the Closet examines how the horror film started and continues, to demonize (or quite literally "monsterize") queer sexuality, and what the pleasures and "costs" of such representations might be both for individual spectators and culture at large.

Book Between Their World and Ours

Download or read book Between Their World and Ours written by Karen Zelan and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism has reached epidemic proportions. The latest studies suggest that as many as one in 150 children ages ten and younger may be affected by autism---a total of 300,000 children in the United States alone. Adults included, there are more than a million people in the United States suffering from autistic disorders. Since autism has had a bleak prognosis, and since the isolation of autistic children is so painful to parents, Karen Zelan's accounts of her breakthroughs with autistic children in Between Their World and Ours present a particularly hopeful perspective. Zelan illustrates how diagnostic labels reflect the preconceptions and prejudices of the diagnostician, but reveal nothing about the unique person who carries the label and his potential as a human being. Describing nine of the forty-five autists with whom she has worked, Zelan documents how psychotherapy with autistic youth helps them to overcome their problems in communicating, playing, feeling, thinking, and interacting with people more companionably. Her riveting narratives, showing her growing understanding of her young patients, capture how it is to be autistic. She describes the ways these young people meet the challenges of being the way the are. Her work demonstrates how the social context in which autistic children find themselves can make a significant difference in their development, their self-esteem, and their ability to think through problems in living. Zelan, a gifted and intuitive psychotherapist, shows how the autist's sense of self emerges during childhood. She details how these autistic children's first friendships originate, the pitfalls and pleasures they experience in relating to their peers, their dreams, and their fears of social contact. These real-life stories reveal what worked with autistic children and why. Zelan offers prescriptive suggestions for parents and teachers based on her discoveries, demonstrating humane ways of dealing with the often troubling problems of autism and of closing the gap between their world and ours.

Book excerpt: A history of the horror film that explores the genre's relationship to the history of homosexuality in AmericaThe horror film has offered a number of medical, psychological, and social models of homosexuality. Examining not only the films themselves, but also other related cultural products, Harry Benshoff defines these models and their implications. We see familiar constructions of gays and lesbians pass before our eyes: homosexuality as a treatable disease, as a threat to national security, as a mark of the pariah. Monsters in the Closet challenges us to more closely examine what we see.

Book excerpt: "You are the thing that keeps him human. You are what keeps him from madness and darkness. We need you, dearest." The Order of the Blessed is all I have known. I keep my head down and my hair covered. I don’t speak unless spoken to. I follow the rules—mostly. But the clock is ticking. Soon, Father Joshua will name my husband and there isn’t a man here I want to touch me. The last thing I expected was for Father Joshua to choose me for his own. I’m special, he said. I’m wicked. And I need a holy man to keep me from my own wickedness. Now, I must escape. Even though I hardly know what’s beyond these walls. Even if I die out there in the forest. I didn’t expect someone to catch me when I leapt. Especially four someones. Rayner. Silvus. Jie. Thom. They’re the most gorgeous men I’ve ever laid eyes on—and they’re also merciless, vicious vampires. They’ve loved me and pursued me for five hundred years, across every life I’ve lived. And they’re ready to possess me, to show me what love is, even as I’m slow to trust. They will do anything to protect me from the Order of the Blessed—but the Order of the Blessed will do anything to protect me from them. It’s time for me to discover just how special I really am. TAKE ME SLOWLY is a reverse harem romance with some very possessive, obsessive, slightly twisted vampires who will do anything for the woman they love and a damaged heroine who slowly finds her own strength. Did I mention m/m? Vampires get lonely waiting to find their lady. Note: Some scenes of abuse and dark themes.

Book Demons in the Bedroom

Download or read book Demons in the Bedroom written by Lidiya Foxglove and published by . This book was released on 2023-02-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you inherited a creepy old house that needs updated bathroom tiles, a new kitchen, and an exorcism? Call me: Helena Nicolescu, the best house flipper witch on the east coast. But I have to admit, I might be in over my head this time. I bought “Lockwood House” at an auction, and the magical community definitely knew something was up, because my rivals were all in on it, including Jake and Jasper, the infuriating wolf shifter twins who think they’re so much better at renovations than me. I overpaid and now I’m stuck with a mess. Floors caving in, 70s carpeting, and…the ghost of an incubus who won’t stop flirting with me while I’m trying to demo. That’s not the only problem. The former owner’s son seems to be drawn to the place against his own will. My witch radar is going off big time, telling me he has demon blood coursing through his own veins. And the wolves must smell trouble in the air, because they keep sniffing around too. I’ll definitely never tell them that I keep uncovering disconcerting artifacts throughout the house. And more than anything, I won’t admit that they both look pretty good in a tool belt. Why does this house seem like it’s calling trouble to the doorstep? I have eight weeks to get this done and then I’m putting this mansion on the market and moving on.
