Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wear black when I work out; it’s a funeral for my fat. Why a funeral? Because death is permanent; when something dies, it’s not coming back. Sharee Samuels was seventeen and 256 pounds when she hit her rock bottom. But with incredible determination and an unflaggingly positive attitude, she went on to lose more than one hundred pounds over the course of five years. When she began documenting her journey on Tumblr, she never expected to become such a powerful voice for health, fitness, and self-love, but her blog, called Funeral for My Fat, soon morphed into an inspirational guide for hundreds of thousands of individuals looking for support and advice on their own fitness journeys. Here Sharee tells her story. Integral to her success has been her burgeoning passion for teaching group fitness classes, including Zumba, as well as her commitment to eating vegan. However, she firmly believes that it is important for everybody to follow their own paths and find what works for them while treating themselves and their bodies with care and respect. If you have a journey ahead of you, Sharee has a story worth reading.

Book Designated Fat Girl

Download or read book Designated Fat Girl written by Jennifer Joyner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brutally honest memoir of life as an obese woman— the pain, humiliation . . . and hope Jennifer Joyner was slowly killing herself with food. She didn’t know what to fear more: dying, or knowing that she was causing her own death. She was powerless to stop. She weighed 336 pounds. She had uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure. She’d lost jobs and friendships, and her marriage was hanging by a thread. She disgusted herself. She couldn’t even attempt a sex life. She’d never felt so desperate or alone. Designated Fat Girl tells her story. It is a painfully honest account of Joyner’s experiences as an obese woman—of always having to buy new clothes that fit, pretending to order for two people at drive-through fast-food joints, the constant cycle of binge and regret, not fitting into her wedding dress, the cruel comments. It’s a story about her decision to have gastric bypass surgery and the resulting complications. In the end, it is also a story of recovery and survival.

Book What s Wrong with Black Women

Download or read book What s Wrong with Black Women written by Monte Maddox and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What''s Wrong with Black Women? is one black man''s story of the bitter downside of black romance. After years of research on the Internet, and a life time of varied experiences pursuing, dating, romancing, and engaging in verbal and mental conflict with black women, the author Monte Maddox, presents a non-stop, Hip-Hop, in your face rollercoaster ride! The thin line between love and hate has been crossed and then some! The faint of heart or ultra sensitive would do well to avoid this frenetic mixture of rage, passion, street-life observations, and at times, tragic revelations about what the author says are bad black women who are destroying good black men. Maddox'' sincere and brutal frankness cuts through the reader like a chainsaw through Swiss cheese! ! If you can''t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. If there''s a "kitchen" of controversy about black women, What''s Wrong with Black Women? is cooking up one heck of a main course! It''s one book that surely would never be in Oprah''s book of the month club! HTTP://DIABLOBANYON.TRIPOD.COM

Book Fearing the Black Body

Download or read book Fearing the Black Body written by Sabrina Strings and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2020 Body and Embodiment Best Publication Award, given by the American Sociological Association Honorable Mention, 2020 Sociology of Sex and Gender Distinguished Book Award, given by the American Sociological Association How the female body has been racialized for over two hundred years There is an obesity epidemic in this country and poor black women are particularly stigmatized as “diseased” and a burden on the public health care system. This is only the most recent incarnation of the fear of fat black women, which Sabrina Strings shows took root more than two hundred years ago. Strings weaves together an eye-opening historical narrative ranging from the Renaissance to the current moment, analyzing important works of art, newspaper and magazine articles, and scientific literature and medical journals—where fat bodies were once praised—showing that fat phobia, as it relates to black women, did not originate with medical findings, but with the Enlightenment era belief that fatness was evidence of “savagery” and racial inferiority. The author argues that the contemporary ideal of slenderness is, at its very core, racialized and racist. Indeed, it was not until the early twentieth century, when racialized attitudes against fatness were already entrenched in the culture, that the medical establishment began its crusade against obesity. An important and original work, Fearing the Black Body argues convincingly that fat phobia isn’t about health at all, but rather a means of using the body to validate race, class, and gender prejudice.

Book The Death of My Father the Pope

Download or read book The Death of My Father the Pope written by Obed Silva and published by MCD. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man mourning his alcoholic father faces a paradox: to pay tribute, lay scorn upon, or pour a drink. A wrenching, dazzling, revelatory debut Weaving between the preparations for his father's funeral and memories of life on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border, Obed Silva chronicles his father's lifelong battle with alcoholism and the havoc it wreaked on his family. Silva and his mother had come north across the border to escape his father’s violent, drunken rages. His father had followed and danced dangerously in and out of the family’s life until he was arrested and deported back to Mexico, where he drank himself to death, one Carta Blanca at a time, at the age of forty-eight. Told with a wry cynicism, a profane, profound anger, an antic, brutally honest voice, and a hard-won classical frame of reference, Silva channels the heartbreak of mourning while wrestling with the resentment and frustration caused by addiction. The Death of My Father the Pope is a fluid and dynamic combination of memoir and an examination of the power of language—and the introduction of a unique and powerful literary voice.
