Book excerpt: 20 million men and women in this country play softball. On the surface, The Softball Game is about men and their need for battles. Aggression is as coded in our DNA as is our need to reproduce. It is a fun game with laughs recalled from years playing softball. The old storyteller is reluctant to do battle. He tells the confrontation in the first person singular, episode by episode. The game is a tribal struggle played by redneck, bad guys and middle class, semi-affluent, anti-heroes. Coming to the rescue is Beth - - a woman! Beth reduces the male struggle to a farce. The driving timbre is the storytellers experiences with three females whose lives are indirectly, obliquely, and directly affected by his wars at softball. The Softball Game is about these women. Phaedra literally hands the young warrior his first sexual experience. Entering the man world still a child, he meets Bridgette his playtoy. She is a transition to adulthood and the paragon of summer love. Playing at sex with adult bodies and a childs maturity, they both lose. Then comes Beth. If you read one chapter, it should be 11. There has never been a hero like her.

Download or read book Women Moving Forward written by Judith Barr Bachay and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Women Moving Forward: Narratives of Identity, Migration, Resilience, and Hope is an excellent example of ethnographic inquiry, revealing the normative behavior of women within specific cultural boundaries, while also illuminating the individual transcendence of norms in the quest for self-realization. The stories in Women Moving Forward are each unique in their depiction of culture and mores and allow the reader to catch a glimpse of the lives of women in various parts of the globe. Despite their variety, however, the stories are united in their core as they each validate the very human need to hope for a future that is fulfilling and, at least to some extent, self-constructed rather than imposed...this book cannot be missed.” Associate Professor Beatriz González Robinson, Ph.D., LMHC Vice President for University Planning and Chief of Staff, St. Thomas University State Coordinator, Office of Women in Higher Education Fellow, American Council on Education “These are the stories that find voice in the human spirit. The simple, yet deeply moving narratives of everyday people who share an extraordinary experience – uprooting themselves from their native lands to seek the centuries-old dream of a better life in the United States. A new language, new culture, new political system. With opportunities to grow nearly offset by deep-seated prejudices that cause more than one to question the wisdom of their life-altering decision. Yet all persevere. All prevail. So, ultimately, these are the stories of everyday heroes (though none might admit to it). Pioneers, following the great American tradition that says, ‘You are welcome here, and with hard work and patience, you too will realize your dream.’ They hail from Cuba, Jamaica, and elsewhere, but each has made a new home in a strange new place without sacrificing their cherished traditions and values. And they and their adopted land are the better for it. So sit back and enjoy these twelve humble, yet beautiful tales. Raúl Fernández-Calienes and Judy Barr Bachay have given us a treasure.” Brother Herman E. Zaccarelli, C.S.C. Formerly Director, Educational Conference Center, Kings College, Pennsylvania

  • ISBN : 1978813686
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Deportes written by José M Alamillo and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-17 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the first half of the twentieth century, Deportes uncovers the hidden experiences of Mexican male and female athletes, teams and leagues and their supporters who fought for a more level playing field on both sides of the border. Despite a widespread belief that Mexicans shunned physical exercise, teamwork or “good sportsmanship,” they proved that they could compete in a wide variety of sports at amateur, semiprofessional, Olympic and professional levels. Some even made their mark in the sports world by becoming the “first” Mexican athlete to reach the big leagues and win Olympic medals or world boxing and tennis titles. These sporting achievements were not theirs alone, an entire cadre of supporters—families, friends, coaches, managers, promoters, sportswriters, and fans—rallied around them and celebrated their athletic success. The Mexican nation and community, at home or abroad, elevated Mexican athletes to sports hero status with a deep sense of cultural and national pride. Alamillo argues that Mexican-origin males and females in the United States used sports to empower themselves and their community by developing and sustaining transnational networks with Mexico. Ultimately, these athletes and their supporters created a “sporting Mexican diaspora” that overcame economic barriers, challenged racial and gender assumptions, forged sporting networks across borders, developed new hybrid identities and raised awareness about civil rights within and beyond the sporting world.
