Book My Life in Prison Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Life in Prison Classic Reprint written by Donald Lowrie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life in Prison I was broke. I had not eaten for three days. I had walked the streets for three nights. Every fibre of my being, every precept of my home training protested against and would not permit my begging. I saw persons all about me spending money for trifles, or luxuries. I envied the ragged street urchin as he took a nickel in exchange for a newspaper and ran expectantly to the next pedestrian. But I was broke and utterly miserable. Have you ever been broke? Have you ever been hungry and miserable, not knowing when or where you were going to get your next meal, nor where you were going to spend your next night? Have you ever tramped holes in your shoes in a tiresome, discouraging effort to get work, meeting rebuff and insults in return for your earnestness and sincerity, and encountering an utter lack of an understanding of your crying necessity in those with whom you have pleaded for a chance? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Months in an English Prison The reader of this book, whether a believer in Spiritualism, or one who rejects its claims as delusive and impossible, will be struck by the clear and frank confidence shown in the narrative, especially of the circumstances that preceded the criminal trial, and will soon find his feelings drawn into sympathy with the tender, faithful, and courageous spirit of the writer. The heart of the book is the heart of a noble woman. After a consideration of the whole case, there cannot remain a doubt of her innocence of the crime for which she suffered; and it must be a continual reproach to the jurisprudence of the foremost among nations that such an injustice could be done under the forms of law. Download or read book A Spirit in Prison Classic Reprint written by Robert Smythe Hichens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Spirit in Prison Vere heard the song as she sat in the sun with her face set towards N isida and the distant peak of Ischia; and instinctively she shifted her position, and turned her head, looking towards the calm and untroubled water that stretched between her and Naples. For the voice that sang of the beautiful city was coming towards her from the beautiful city, hymning the Siren it had left perhaps but two hours ago. On his pedestal set upon rock San Francesco seemed to be attentive to the voice. He stood beyond the sheltered pool of the sea that divided the islet from the mainland, staring across at Vere as if he envied her; he who was rooted in Italy and deprived of her exquisite freedom. His beard hung down to his waist, his cross protruded over his left shoulder, and his robe of dusty grayish brown touched his feet, which had never wan dered one step since he was made, and set there to keep watch over the fishermen who come to sleep under the lee of the island by night. Now it was brilliant daylight. The sun shone vividly over the Bay of Naples, over the great and vital city. Book My Life Out of Prison Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Life Out of Prison Classic Reprint written by Donald Lowrie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life Out of Prison August first, nineteen hundred and eleven! To you that probably conveys nothing; to me it is a never-to-be-forgotten day, the marking of an epoch in my life - a life up to that time brimful of tragic experience and vivid impressions. Since that time my life has been equally vivid, if not tragic, though in a different way. It was on that date, after spending ten years behind stultifying steel bars and stolid stone walls, ten years in stripes and in the midst of degradation, that I was paroled from San Quentin prison. To-day this prison is the domicile of the broken-spirited ex-political boss of San Francisco, the lifelong habitat of hundreds of hopeless men and women, the living grave of nearly 2000 human beings, each of whom is a cog in the ponderous, grinding wheel of human progress, for no man nor woman suffering a ruptured life in a prison cell is a less important unit in the evolution of humanity than is the money king, the man with the hoe or the minister of the gospel. No human being has yet lived and no human being now lives who has not or does not serve an important purpose in the great scheme of things. The fact that each human being comes into the world with latent propensities, certain temperamental characteristics and well-defined likes and dislikes has always been a source of speculation for me. I believe that every thought of every human being is of immense value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Prison Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prison Life Classic Reprint written by John M. Brewer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prison Life The Legislature of Maryland by joint resolution adjourned to meet in the City of Frederick, September 17th, 1861. The author of this brief narrative of Prison Life in Government prisons was the Reading Clerk of the Maryland Senate. The office which he held clearly indicated his duties. The writer, in common with other citizens of Maryland who were attracted to the temporary capital of the State by the momentous questions to be discussed by the Maryland Legislature, availed himself of what he then believed and still believes to be the unquestioned prerogative of every freeman - the right to express his convictions of public duty. Having this perception of political right, the writer of this did not hesitate freely to exchange opinion with citizens of Frederick and gentlemen from other sections of the State, doubtless drawn there by the magnitude of the questions to be discussed in the Legislature, and upon whose deliberations the destiny of their State was in a measure to be decided. Believing at that time, as he still believes, that the old Union was hopelessly destroyed, the writer, a citizen born, reared and educated in Maryland, necessarily felt some interest in the future political affiliation which his State might form. When, during the summer of 1861, it became manifest from the repeated acts of tyranny on the part of the General Government, that Maryland had ceased to exist as a State, but was considered only a mere province of the Federal Government. The last free Legislature elected by the freemen of the former State of Maryland, through the Committee on Federal Relations, made a Report on the condition of the State, which will be read and admired as long as the English language exists. After they had eloquently and truthfully portrayed, and indignantly protested against the wrongs and outrages heaped upon a brave, spirited, but helpless State, they adjourned to meet on the 17th of September, 1861. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman in Prison I was reading an evening paper. I glanced over the advertisements. One attracted my attention, and held it so strongly that I read it over and over, again and again. There was nothing unusual in it to ordinary observation. It read, "Wanted. - At the Penitentiary, a Matron. Inquire at the Institution." I turned the paper over to read the general news; but could not place my thoughts so as to comprehend the meaning of the words before my sight. Without the intention to do so, I looked again at the advertisement. It became a study to me. Said Thought - If you were to answer that advertisement, and obtain the situation, it would place you upon missionary ground, and at the same time give you employment which would afford you a sup port while you are teaching the ignorant. You would get knowledge in the position. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
