Book John Updike

Download or read book John Updike written by Jack De Bellis and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2005-02-28 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-seven critics, as well as Updike himself, provide a kaleidoscopic view of the Rabbit Angstrom saga in 34 reviews and essays. There is dual purpose of this collection of critical responses: first, to provide a historical view of the critical reception of all of Updike's works about Harry Rabbit Angstrom—the four Rabbit novels and the novella Rabbit Remembered and second, to show how these reviews and articles can illuminate the reader with the range of approaches to the saga. These responses to the saga reveal the reception of each installment of the saga and how critical acclamation rose with each work. The first reviews of Rabbit, Run noted Updike's ability to redeem an ex-basketball player's ordinary life through brilliant, innovative style. Scholarly essays debated whether Rabbit was a satiric figure. Updike's sequel, Rabbit Redux, showed how, for reviewer Richard Locke the inner surface of banal experiences could be blended seamlessly to social unrest and war. A later critic, Irina Negrea adopted the Jean Baudrillard to critique Marshall McLuhan's optimistic vision of the global village. Reviewer Thomas R. Edwards found that Rabbit Is Rich is composed of meditations on religion, politics, and economics, with motifs intertwined. The saga, for critic Ralph Wood showed Updike as our finest literary celebrant both of human ambiguity and the human acceptance of it. Reviewing Rabbit at Rest, Joyce Carol Oates called it a hugely ambitious achievement and critic Thomas Disch proclaimed, it to be the best large-scale literary work by an American in this century, thus the Great American Novel.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • The standout literary debut that everyone is talking about • "Inventive, heartbreaking and acutely funny."—The Guardian A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, TIME, NPR, Oprah Daily, People Blandine isn't like the other residents of her building. An online obituary writer. A young mother with a dark secret. A woman waging a solo campaign against rodents — neighbors, separated only by the thin walls of a low-cost housing complex in the once bustling industrial center of Vacca Vale, Indiana. Welcome to the Rabbit Hutch. Ethereally beautiful and formidably intelligent, Blandine shares her apartment with three teenage boys she neither likes nor understands, all, like her, now aged out of the state foster care system that has repeatedly failed them, all searching for meaning in their lives. Set over one sweltering week in July and culminating in a bizarre act of violence that finally changes everything, The Rabbit Hutch is a savagely beautiful and bitingly funny snapshot of contemporary America, a gorgeous and provocative tale of loneliness and longing, entrapment and, ultimately, freedom. "Gunty writes with a keen, sensitive eye about all manner of intimacies―the kind we build with other people, and the kind we cultivate around ourselves and our tenuous, private aspirations."—Raven Leilani, author of Luster

Book Notebook of Colonial Memories

Download or read book Notebook of Colonial Memories written by Isabela Figueiredo and published by . This book was released on 2015-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Isabela Figueiredo's literary memoir Notebook of Colonial Memories was originally published in Portugal in 2009 as Caderno de Memórias Coloniais. It traces the author's growing up in the 1960s and 70s in Mozambique, which was then still a Portuguese colony, and her "return" at the age of thirteen to Portugal (a country she had never seen) following Mozambique's independence. It offers an uncommonly candid and unsparing perspective on the realities of late Portuguese colonialism in Africa and on the political climate surrounding the "repatriation" to Portugal of hundreds of thousands of former colonial settlers, mainly from Angola and Mozambique. The critical introduction by Anna Klobucka and Phillip Rothwell describes these historical circumstances and contextualizes Figueiredo's text for the English-language reader, as well as commenting on the writer's complex exercise of remembrance, reconstruction and fictionalization of her experience in both Mozambique and Portugal. Keywords: Portuguese colonialism, Mozambique, decolonization, postcolonialism, memoir" --

Book Laptop from Hell

Download or read book Laptop from Hell written by Miranda Devine and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on Tucker Carlson Tonight! USA Today and Wall Street Journal Bestseller! The inside story of the laptop that exposed the president’s dirtiest secret. When a drug-addled Hunter Biden abandoned his waterlogged computer at a Mac repair shop in Delaware in the spring of 2019, just six days before his father announced his candidacy for the United States presidency, it became the ticking time bomb in the shadows of Joe Biden’s campaign. The dirty secrets contained in Hunter’s laptop almost derailed his father’s presidential campaign and ignited one of the greatest media coverups in American history. This is the unvarnished story of what’s really inside the laptop and what China knows about the Bidens, by the New York Post journalist who brought it into the open. It exposes the coordinated censorship operation by Big Tech, the media establishment, and former intelligence operatives to stifle the New York Post’s coverage, in a chilling exercise of raw political power three weeks before the 2020 election. A treasure trove of corporate documents, emails, text messages, photographs, and voice recordings, spanning a decade, the laptop provided the first evidence that President Joe Biden was involved in his son’s ventures in China, Ukraine, and beyond, despite his repeated denials. This intimate insight into Hunter’s dissolute lifestyle shows he was incapable of holding down a job, let alone being paid tens of millions of dollars in high-powered international business deals by foreign interests, unless he had something else of value to sell—which of course he did. He was the son of the vice president who would go on to become the leader of the free world.
