Book excerpt: Recently unearthed in the archives of Stalin's secret police, the NKVD, Nina Lugovskaya's diary offers rare insight into the life of a teenage girl in Stalin's Russia-when fear of arrest was a fact of daily life. Like Anne Frank, thirteen-year-old Nina is conscious of the extraordinary dangers around her and her family, yet she is preoccupied by ordinary teenage concerns: boys, parties, her appearance, who she wants to be when she grows up. As Nina records her most personal emotions and observations, herreflections shape a diary that is as much a portrait of her intense inner world as it is the Soviet outer one. Preserved here, these markings-the evidence used to convict Nina as a "counterrevolutionary"- offer today's reader a fascinating perspective on the era in which she lived.

Book excerpt: Hello, Boomers! We're dedicating this book to you so you can get that old "boom" back. With over 100 years of fitness and nutrition experience combined, we knew as we rounded the corner to another year and another phase of our lives, we needed to write this book, "If You Want to Live, Move!" and share our best secrets and tips with our fellow boomers (and seniors!). We're keyed-up to show how you, too, can enjoy abundant strength, energy, flexibility and endurance to live a long, productive life which you richly deserve. We feel you are holding in your hands a prescription for ageless energy and timeless health. We are fitness and nutrition professionals. As good fortune would have it, we stumbled upon the secret many, many years ago (it's not really a secret, as you will learn) of living a life of vitality, optimism and prime physical health. One of us was born in 1926, and the other was born in 1961. One of us lives on the west coast and one in the Midwest. One of us is a woman, one of us, a man. One, a senior (from the greatest generation that ever lived), one a boomer. On the surface, it appears we don't have much in common. In fact, we have a lot in common; the most important is this: We both have a passion for teaching others the right way to live fuller, richer lives! You could say we both 'talk the talk' and 'walk the walk'. So, let us talk to you about a new beginning and walk you through it! This book is about how to dig deep to create more energy, immense joy and better health. It explores the intersection of fitness and aging, and ultimately answers these two questions: Is there a secret magic potion for living longer? (yes and no) Which is most important, diet or exercise, for feeling younger and being healthier? (both) We put our brains together to come up with a plan for changing your life for the better. In this book, you'll learn easy, effective ways to deal with difficult challenges we all face as we climb over the next hill, including low energy, increasing weight and sagging skin, achy bones and joints, irritability, and melancholy. But our main focus will be on showing you how moving your body and eating high-value foods will increase the odds that you ride into your golden years with energy and vitality. You don't need a background in anatomy or physiology to use this book. It simply weaves together information that we've learned over the course of our lives, and you can choose the tools presented here that work best for you. The mind and body are fascinating subjects, but we haven't attempted to be comprehensive here. Rather, we focused on simple methods that have had an effect on our clients over the years. Different things work for different people, so choose the exercises and tips that work best for you.A word of caution, please seek advice from a medical professional before you begin any new exercise regimen or diet. Finally, if we know one thing for sure, it's that making small changes consistently will lead to big changes in your body and your experience of daily living.Remember this, when you change your habits, you change your life."If You Want to Live, Move!" is an update simplified program that empowers you to take the right action each day on a consistent basis so you can realize the rich rewards that are rightfully yours - energy, strength, and renewed health. This book is designed so that you can quickly access the nuts and bolts of our program and get right to it.We have laid out this book to be an easy (and illuminating) read. Book Where We Want to Live

Download or read book Where We Want to Live written by Ryan Gravel and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner, Phillip D. Reed Award for Outstanding Writing on the Southern Environment** **A Planetizen Top Planning Book for 2017** After decades of sprawl, many American city and suburban residents struggle with issues related to traffic (and its accompanying challenges for our health and productivity), divided neighborhoods, and a non-walkable life. Urban designer Ryan Gravel makes a case for how we can change this. Cities have the capacity to create a healthier, more satisfying way of life by remodeling and augmenting their infrastructure in ways that connect neighborhoods and communities. Gravel came up with a way to do just that in his hometown with the Atlanta Beltline project. It connects 40 diverse Atlanta neighborhoods to city schools, shopping districts, and public parks, and has already seen a huge payoff in real estate development and local business revenue. Similar projects are in the works around the country, from the Los Angeles River Revitalization and the Buffalo Bayou in Houston to the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis and the Underline in Miami. In Where We Want to Live, Gravel presents an exciting blueprint for revitalizing cities to make them places where we truly want to live.

Book excerpt: It’s a story which is written keeping in mind a woman. A woman who fought and keeps fighting. A woman who dreamt and never stopped dreaming. A woman who fell in love because she wanted to feel in love. A Women who made her own way. Runmoy was waiting in the garden of his big mansion. There was a teapot with couple of teacups ready for Savitri to arrive. Runmoy stood up when he saw Savitri walking towards him. ‘Kaise hain aap Runmoyji (How are you Runmoyji)?’ asked Savitri Devi shaking Runmoy’ s hand. Runmoy responded with mixed emotions, ‘Abhi tak to theek hai Madam, aage ka aapke upar hai. Boliye? (I am fine till now, but it further depends on you. What have you got?)’. Savitri Devi took the opposite chair and passed on the documents to Runmoy who started sweating looking at the different pages he held in his hand. (Talking in Hindi, he said) ‘What rubbish is this? Where did you get this from? Do you know what are you playing with? I will destroy you.’ Runmoy stood up and started shouting but it was more of desperation than command. Savitri remained seated and said, ‘I am ok if you don’t want to believe me. I will hand it over to the press and let’s see the drama. Are you ok with that?’ Runmoy signaled his secretary and the server to leave them alone. ‘What do you want Savitri?’ Said weak looking Runmoy. Savitri looked into his eyes and said, ‘You are trying your best to become rich, and I have no issues with it but not at cost of destroying me. I will not let anyone destroy me and the empire I have made. Unlike you, I have worked hard every day for last 20 years to make this happen. You listen to me and listen well. All this drama you have created with someone whom I don’t know has to be put to end. I need everything back what you took from me in last 24 hours and I need it in next 24 hours

Book excerpt: This book, I Want To Live, Volume Two, is the follow up to the first I Want To Live book. After my first medical operation for bowel cancer in 1994, I thought then that I was free of this awful disease. But my troubles had only just begun. What had pleasantly turned from good news from the doctors about an illness that was in remission would turn into another nightmare. Just a short eighteen months later, after a Cat-scan at hospital, I was told by the doctors that there had been a recurrence of my illness. Now another serious operation was in the offing in 1996. This second operation took place, following by radiotherapy. I had triumphed again, for how long? I was to return to hospital for another operation in 1997, the third in three years... surely this was the last, I wondered. But it was not to be. Ten years passed, then I returned to hospital again in 2007.

This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I began to write it all down when I was on Mount Athos, during a period of complete solitude, while staying at the kathisma or monastic dwelling of St John the Theologian, near the small harbour of Simonopetra Monastery. I completed it later when I was staying on the island of the same St John, on Patmos, in Kouvari. Both, places of quietude and spiritual seclusion. Places of prayer. In all I only needed a few days. My sole companion was the noble disciple of love, St John. The one who truly loved and was indeed loved by Christ. The text would only be the fruit of love and quietude; it is a fruit of the desert. I would say the fruit of prayer, but I fear that this might be considered an exaggeration. The questions – I chose one hundred to make a round number – and the dialogues are all authentic. The people are also real, although of course the names have been changed. On the other hand I have not recorded the whole discussion, but I have selected certain questions. All this is not so important. What really matters is for human nature and the person of the true God to be revealed clearly and truly through the whole discussion. Nothing else in this life matters more.
