Download or read book Baby Making written by Bart Fauser and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the developing world, the choices available to couples for fertility treatments in the 21st century are wider than ever before. This is a time when most types of infertility can be treated by modern 'test-tube' methods, yet reproduction itself has become inextricably bound with social and political trends - declining birth rates, delayed first pregnancy, childbirth beyond the age of 40, the state funding of infertility treatment - fertility treatment is a hot topic, high on the agenda of politicians in their efforts to reverse declining national fertility rates. The range of new technologies is expansive, from embryo selection by genetic analysis to egg donation in the over-forties and cryopreservation. Today, the 'assistance' of conception with treatments such as IVF reflects a life-choice whose context is immediately social, cultural, personal, and political. Arguing that these new technologies allow the 'design' of babies in a way which is far beyond the spontaneity of nature, Bart Fauser and Paul Devroey describe the new treatments, consider what they can do, and look at how far they have come in shaping our everyday lives. Considering the wider implications of fertility treatment, they also look at the issues it raises, and evaluate how far treatments can, and should, go.

But through the extended rounds of procedures, they gained experience and emotional resilience. Many couples drop out due to financial constraints. The initial cost will be expensive, but that could escalate to the cost of a small house. The emotional journey could be an impossibly gruelling one. This booklet, whilst recording the extensive IVF processes, also focuses on how the couple deals with the emotional demands placed upon them.

Book Freezing Fertility

Download or read book Freezing Fertility written by Lucy van de Wiel and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcomed as liberation and dismissed as exploitation, egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) has rapidly become one of the most widely-discussed and influential new reproductive technologies of this century. In Freezing Fertility, Lucy van de Wiel takes us inside the world of fertility preservation—with its egg freezing parties, contested age limits, proactive anticipations and equity investments—and shows how the popularization of egg freezing has profound consequences for the way in which female fertility and reproductive aging are understood, commercialized and politicized. Beyond an individual reproductive choice for people who may want to have children later in life, Freezing Fertility explores how the rise of egg freezing also reveals broader cultural, political and economic negotiations about reproductive politics, gender inequities, age normativities and the financialization of healthcare. Van de Wiel investigates these issues by analyzing a wide range of sources—varying from sparkly online platforms to heart-breaking court cases and intimate autobiographical accounts—that are emblematic of each stage of the egg freezing procedure. By following the egg’s journey, Freezing Fertility examines how contemporary egg freezing practices both reflect broader social, regulatory and economic power asymmetries and repoliticize fertility and aging in ways that affect the public at large. In doing so, the book explores how the possibility of egg freezing shifts our relation to the beginning and end of life.

Book Fertility and Beyond

    Book Details:
  • Author : Heather Tankersley
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-02-08
  • ISBN : 9781980232131
  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book Fertility and Beyond written by Heather Tankersley and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fertility & Beyond was written to initiate the conversation about infertility. The author shares her personal experience with infertility and the journey she and her husband took to have their two beautiful daughters. Throughout this experience, she met many extraordinary people and decided it would be helpful for others who are struggling to start a family, looking to support a loved one, or simply want to understand the condition that affects 1 in 8 couples. Heather sat down with experts regarding many aspects of fertility and engaged in a candid conversation. This book is not full of medical jargon or complicated terminology. It was written with the idea that we could start the conversation about infertility to help educate, spread awareness and provide comfort. In this book, Heather takes the reader through her own personal story and then on a journey to meet 7 "characters" infertility patients may come in contact with. With 1 in 8 couples facing infertility and the cause of infertility roughly 1/3 female-related, 1/3 male-related, and 1/3 unexplained, she opens the door to a conversation about the topic. Chances are you know someone who has been touched by infertility. The author begins with Tara Joyner, a Licensed professional counselor, who talks to Heather about the emotional side of infertility and how to move through the various stages of the process, how to process grief, and how to keep your relationship strong. Next, she engages Melanie Collins, an Ob/Gyn who helps women understand their fertility, their cycle, and basic tests and treatment options that may be available through your regular gynecologist. Dr. Sandeep Mistry, a urologist, joins the conversation by talking about the causes of male factor infertility, factors that impact male fertility and available treatment options. He makes this often-uncomfortable topic a little less taboo and helps men overcome some of the embarrassment they may experience surrounding male factor infertility. Once Heather has discussed the "basics," she connects with Dr. Natalie Burger, a licensed and board certified Reproductive Endocrinologist. Dr. Burger covers various testing and existing treatment. The two have a candid conversation about success rates, finding the right doctor and striking a balanced approach. Dr. Burger is patient-centered and works hard to help the reader navigate through the various treatment options. With a percentage of all infertility patients seeking IVF (in vitro fertilization), we were able to speak with Tom Turner, an embryologist and pioneer in the field. He shares the history of IVF and how much has changed in just 40 years. You'll get a unique perspective of what happens behind the scenes during an IVF cycle and what goes on in the lab. Heather then goes on to talk with Amanda Jester of Waller Law about how to advocate for yourself and your own fertility. Amanda suffers from an autoimmune disease that commonly impacts fertility. She talks about how to have those tough conversations with your providers and protect your fertility when possible through options such as freezing your eggs. Lastly, Heather meets with Dr. Amy McGuire, a lawyer who also has a Ph.D. in medical ethics and medical humanities. During this conversation, the two discuss a number of topics from multiple births to "reduction," to genetic testing and the ability to edit genes. This is a fascinating conversation because there are so many ethical considerations when it comes to infertility. The book also covers topics such as financing infertility treatments, navigating the process as a couple, and even supporting friends or loved ones through the process. A must-read book for anyone struggling with infertility, comforting those with infertility or who simply wants to be a part of the conversation and spread the word!

Science and Babies is a straightforward presentation of the major reproductive issues we face that suggests answers for the public. Book Biological Relatives

Download or read book Biological Relatives written by Sarah Franklin and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-five years after its initial success as a form of technologically assisted human reproduction, and five million miracle babies later, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has become a routine procedure worldwide. In Biological Relatives, Sarah Franklin explores how the normalization of IVF has changed how both technology and biology are understood. Drawing on anthropology, feminist theory, and science studies, Franklin charts the evolution of IVF from an experimental research technique into a global technological platform used for a wide variety of applications, including genetic diagnosis, livestock breeding, cloning, and stem cell research. She contends that despite its ubiquity, IVF remains a highly paradoxical technology that confirms the relative and contingent nature of biology while creating new biological relatives. Using IVF as a lens, Franklin presents a bold and lucid thesis linking technologies of gender and sex to reproductive biomedicine, contemporary bioinnovation, and the future of kinship.
