Book excerpt: Drawing on an ethnographic study of novel readers in Denmark and the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic, this book provides a snapshot of a phenomenal moment in modern history. The ethnographic approach shows what no historical account of books published during the pandemic will be able to capture, namely the movement of readers between new purchases and books long kept in their collections. The book follows readers who have tuned into novels about plague, apocalypse, and racial violence, but also readers whose taste for older novels, and for re-reading novels they knew earlier in their lives, has grown. Alternating between chapters that analyse single texts that were popular (Albert Camus's The Plague, Ali Smith's Summer, Charlotte Brönte's Jane Eyre) and others that describe clusters of, for example, dystopian fiction and nature writing, this work brings out the diverse quality of the Covid-19 bookshelf. Time is of central importance to this study, both in terms of the time of lockdown and the temporality of reading itself within this wider disrupted sense of time. By exploring these varied experiences, this book investigates the larger question of how the consumption of novels depends on and shapes people's experience of non-work time, providing a specific lens through which to examine the phenomenology of reading more generally. This timely work also negotiates debates in the study of reading that distinguish theoretically between critical reading and reading for pleasure, between professional and lay reading. All sides of the sociological and literary debate must be brought to bear in understanding what readers tell us about what novels have meant to them in this complex historical moment.

From the end of 2019 until presently, the world has been ravaged by the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the cause of this is (obviously) a virus, the extent to which this virus spread, and therefore the number of infections and deaths, was largely determined by socio-economic factors. From this, it follows that the course of the pandemic varies greatly from one country to another. This observation applies both to countries’ resilience to such a pandemic (which is mainly rooted in the period preceding the outbreak of the virus) and to the way in which countries have reacted to the virus (including the political choices on how to respond). Meanwhile, research has made it clear that the nature of this response (e.g., elimination policy, mitigation policy, and proceeding herd immunity) was, on the one hand, strongly determined by political and ideological factors and, on the other hand, was highly influential in the factors of success or failure in combating the pandemic. The book focuses on the situation in a number of Western regions (notably the USA, the UK, and the EU and its Member States). The author addresses the reasons why in many Western countries both pandemic prevention and response policies to Covid-19 have failed. The book concludes with recommendations concerning the rearrangement of the socio-economic order that could increase the resilience of (Western) societies against such pandemics.

The economic consequences for society at large are potentially catastrophic. The health and social care sectors have reacted by providing emergency care on an unprecedented scale, while the scientific community has focused on developing new treatments and a vaccine to prevent future waves of the pandemic. Evidence is emerging to suggest that certain conditions, such as obesity and hypertension, predispose some individuals to a worse outcome if they become infected, and that women may be less likely to die from COVID-19 than men. It is also currently believed that pregnant women are at no greater risk than the general population. There is an urgent need to determine whether these early observations are correct. Furthermore, we need to be sure that pregnancy outcomes are not affected by COVID-19 and that SARS-CoV-2 is not transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy or labour, nor to the infant through breast milk. There are so many questions that need to be answered to optimise care, avoid harm, reduce anxiety amongst women and their families, and inform health professionals and policymakers. We also need to understand the unintended consequences of the global lockdown on women’s health in general. For example, have rates of domestic violence risen; to what extent has women’s mental health been affected and have women successfully adapted or devised new coping mechanisms; have women been denied access to gynaecological treatments during the lockdown, including safe abortion and, if so, with what impact on their health and wellbeing; has the female work-force suffered disproportionately in economic terms; have national and international recommendations and policies been sufficiently gender neutral; have breastfeeding rates been adversely affected; will COVID-19 make attainment of the UN SDGs more difficult, etc.? In keeping with the Scope & Mission of Frontiers in Global Women’s Health, this Research Topic aims to provide a multi-disciplinary platform to answer important COVID-19 related questions that specifically impact upon women’s health and wellbeing, particular in resource-poor settings. The Topic Editors welcome a broad range of contributions including Original Research, Reviews, Commentaries, Study Protocols and Systematic Reviews. Book excerpt: Edmund Husserl’s ideas, informed by Kant’s Critiques, constituted a point of departure when rereading philosophical problems of subject and subjectivity. In his “Phänomenologie und Egologie” (1961/63), Jan Broekman revealed how Husserl analysed the “Split Ego” notion in Kant’s vision, which became fundamental for his phenomenology. The form and function of subjectivity were likewise positioned in psychiatry and literature, as well as in aesthetics, as Jan Broekman’s texts on ‘cubism’ demonstrated. Problems of ‘language’ unfolded in studies on topics ranging from the texts of Ezra Pound to the dialogic insights of Martin Buber, all of which were involved in the development of semiotics. Two themes accompanied these insights: the notion and later Parisian mainstream called structuralism, and the urgent need to arrive at deeper insights into the links between Marxism and phenomenology. Central language concepts also played a part: as early as 1986, Jan Broekman published on ‘semiology and medical discourse’, and in 1992 on ‘neurosemiotics’, before addressing the link between speech act and (legal as well as social) freedom in 1993. In all these works, the subject and the atmosphere of subjectivity were essential aspects. In addition to his writing, Jan Broekman gave courses on current philosophical issues, law and medicine until retiring in 1996, and in his “Intertwinements of Law and Medicine” revisited subjectivity aspects, while also offering a synthetic view.In this Festschrift in honour of Jan Broekman, the contributions address the analogue/digital dichotomy in semiotics, the multicultural self in language and semiotics, semiology and legal discourse, the legal subject and the atmosphere of subjectivity, intertwinements of law and medicine, the semiotics of law in legal education, signs in law and legal discourse, making meaning in law, and legal speech acts.
