Book June Bug s Grocery and the Cornfield Jook

Download or read book June Bug s Grocery and the Cornfield Jook written by Mary Sterner Lawson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibrant South Georgia scene was pure Americana-a picturesque, old-fashioned grocery store next to a thriving jook joint in the heart of a South Albany African-American community. Originally more secluded, this nucleus of the neighborhood became a familiar sight to all Albany residents with the opening in the 1980s of a roadway that passed by the scene and across a new bridge over the nearby Flint River. The waters of the Flint proved to be much too near in 1994, when a catastrophic flood damaged beyond repair the grocery, jook, and hundreds of homes along the river. Deeply touched by that enormous community loss, Mary Sterner Lawson used her own 1987 photographs to paint a watercolor of the once-flourishing South Albany scene. She never imagined how overwhelming the public response would be when the painting was exhibited in the main lobby of a busy local hospital in 1996. A veritable flood of reminiscences came her way-tales of childhood memories, community gatherings, friendships, brotherhood, families, prostitution, moonshine, and murder. Inspired by the community members who encouraged and aided her efforts, Lawson began recording the rich recollections. June Bug's Grocery and the Cornfield Jook registers these voices of the community, the voices behind the painting.

Book Hold Your Head up No More Tears

Download or read book Hold Your Head up No More Tears written by Ollie Johnson and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ollie Johnson wrote this book hoping she could help someone who have lost a child. Tyrone was a special child. His mind was far beyond his eight years. Ollie didn't know so many people had heard about this little brave boy. People would come to the door and just pass gifts for him. He was so special. All the times he was in the hospital, he wouldn't let the nurses do anything. He would say my mother and my sister will bathe me. He passed at home, when they could not help him anymore. Ollie said she will take him home and take care of him. The doctor always explained to him what was happening to him. Tyrone seemed to understand what they were talking about. He loved church. He wanted to be baptize, so they let him. Tyrone told Ollie he wouldn't be with her when he becomes an adult. His dad was so fond of him. He was born ten and a half years after Ollie's last child was born. During Tyrone's last days, they had a nurse coming in. He told her, "You can change my bed and dress me." This was Sunday. His doctor on Friday had called and told them to go and make plans for his funeral and that she would be there on Monday. Tyrone died on Sunday with lots of people and family there. In Psalm 127:3aEUR"5, it is said children are too often seen as liabilities rather than assets, but the bible called children "an heritage of the Lord," a reward. We can learn valuable lesson from their inquisitive minds and trusting spirit. The person Ollie is today is because of the time God loan Tyrone to her. As he was passing, he looked at her and said, "Hold your head up, no more tears." He closed his eyes, and he was gone.

The presence of social institutions from ancient times and the universal presence of most of the main types of them in all known societies point to the fact that societies cannot exist without them. This obvious indispensability indicates fundamental causes or impelling reasons for their existence. They must perform functions which are essential to the life of societies. They must be characteristic of human nature as these express themselves in social contacts and situations among associated human behavior which are called social institutions. As a newly formed corporation UNOCOM: Unity of the Community will be engaged in educational activities of the institutions of society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every once in a while, I get a chance to listen to broadcasts on the radio or watch networking on television. And the more and more I do this, the more and more I get deeply concerned with the quality of so-called religious material presented on such via comments, discussions, lectures, preachings, teachings, etc. Every so often, I get led to deal with some of the monumental misunderstandings that menace the messianic ministry, mission, momentum, motion, motive, and movement. As these pessimistic, provocational presentations prevent permeation of positive providential pressure on the profound populace's psyche patterns, I constantly think about the repercussions they have on the spiritual psyche. It is very unfortunate that we are letting our guards down and allowing this type of pessimistic provocational presentations to prevent the permeation of positive providential pressure on the profound populace's psyche patterns. There are two strategies/tactics/ways to deal with this type of teaching and preaching: one is defensive and the other is offensive. The offensive tactic/strategy/way to guard against it is to constantly teach and preach against it, thereby exposing it for what it is and minimizing it, if not eliminating it--this is referred to as the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; the defensive tactic/strategy/way to guard against it is to block or prevent it from entering your mind by literally putting a spiritual device of some sort over your mind--this is referred to as the helmet of salvation.

Book Remembering Lucile

    Book Details:
  • Author : Polly E. Bugros McLean
  • Publisher : University Press of Colorado
  • Release : 2018-09-28
  • ISBN : 1607328259
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Remembering Lucile written by Polly E. Bugros McLean and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1918 Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Jones received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, becoming its first female African American graduate (though she was not allowed to "walk" at graduation, nor is she pictured in the 1918 CU yearbook). In Remembering Lucile, author Polly McLean depicts the rise of the African American middle class through the historical journey of Lucile and her family from slavery in northern Virginia to life in the American West, using their personal story as a lens through which to examine the greater experience of middle-class Blacks in the early twentieth century. The first-born daughter of emancipated slaves, Lucile refused to be defined by the racist and sexist climate of her times, settling on a career path in teaching that required great courage in the face of pernicious Jim Crow laws. Embracing her sister’s dream for higher education and W. E. B. Du Bois’s ideology, she placed education and intelligence at the forefront of her life, teaching in places where she could most benefit African American students. Over her 105 years she was an eyewitness to spectacular, inspiring, and tragic moments in American history, including horrific lynchings and systemic racism in housing and business opportunities, as well as the success of women's suffrage and Black-owned businesses and educational institutions. Remembering Lucile employs a unique blend of Black feminist historiography and wider discussions of race, gender, class, religion, politics, and education to illuminate major events in African American history and culture, as well as the history of the University of Colorado and its relationship to Black students and alumni, as it has evolved from institutional racism to welcoming acceptance. This extensive biography paints a vivid picture of a strong, extraordinary Black woman who witnessed an extraordinary time in America and rectifies her omission from CU’s institutional history. The book fills an important gap in the literature of the history of Blacks in the Rocky Mountain region and will be of significance to anyone interested in American history.
