Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1757, a sailing ship owned by an affluent Connecticut merchant sailed from New London to the tiny island of Bence in Sierra Leone, West Africa, to take on fresh water and slaves. On board was the owner’s son, on a training voyage to learn the trade. The Logbooks explores that voyage, and two others documented by that young man, to unearth new realities of Connecticut’s slave trade and question how we could have forgotten this part of our past so completely. When writer Anne Farrow discovered the significance of the logbooks for the Africa and two other ships in 2004, her mother had been recently diagnosed with dementia. As Farrow bore witness to the impact of memory loss on her mother’s sense of self, she also began a journey into the world of the logbooks and the Atlantic slave trade, eventually retracing part of the Africa’s long-ago voyage to Sierra Leone. As the narrative unfolds in The Logbooks, Farrow explores the idea that if our history is incomplete, then collectively we have forgotten who we are—a loss that is in some ways similar to what her mother experienced. Her meditations are well rounded with references to the work of writers, historians, and psychologists. Forthright, well researched, and warmly recounted, Farrow’s writing is that of a novelist’s, with an eye for detail. Using a wealth of primary sources, she paints a vivid picture of the eighteenth-century Connecticut slavers. The multiple narratives combine in surprising and effective ways to make this an intimate confrontation with the past, and a powerful meditation on how slavery still affects us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musical Memories of Hartford: Drawn From Records Public and Private A foreword! Hartford! With its fifty years and more of musical history, which it would be impossible to relate in full. Where begin, where end! At first it was my intention to write only of what was within memory, with the hope that to those who are living, many pleasant events, long since forgotten, would be recalled. Then the past, with its traditions became fascinating, and I found myself dipping into the far past the beginnings of music in Hartford. This led to encouragement that possibly the next generation would find interest in reading about the musical events that had come within the lifetime of this gen cration. It has been my idea not only to tell about Hartford's musicians of note and what they accomplished, but also as far as was practical to speak of the opportunities we have had in listening to artists and the fine music brought to us. The accounts naturally were obliged to be fragmentary. As a small contribution to my much beloved city of Hartford, I have gladly gathered together these facts about the friends and musicians who made the days of progress possible. To all those who have helped and many have been called upon to clear fading memories, supply old pro grammes, answer many questions and give kindly criticism my deep gratitude is felt and warmest thanks are given. Book excerpt: More than twenty years after departing Hartford, Connecticut, for Raleigh, North Carolina, the NHL's Whalers continue to inspire passion among fans. As HartfordBusiness.com reported in 2015, "Whalers merchandise...still has a cult following not only among fans in Connecticut but around the country." But Whalers devotees aren't just clamoring for jerseys, hats and t-shirts. They're nostalgic for a team that had New England roots for nearly 25 years--in Boston, Springfield, and Hartford--and featured some of the greatest players in NHL history, including Gordie Howe (with his sons Mark and Marty), Bobby Hull, and Ron Francis. Pat Pickens’s book details the Whalers’ origin in Boston in 1972, the team’s WHA championship in 1973, the roof collapse of their home arena that indirectly led to their entrance to the NHL in 1979, their stunning NHL playoff-series win against the top-seeded Quebec Nordiques in 1986, the 1986-87 season when they claimed their first division championship, and their relocation south in 1997 as the Carolina Hurricanes. Pickens imagines a Stanley Cup delivered to hockey-crazed Hartford in 2006, when the Hurricanes instead brought it home to North Carolina. The book also explores the likelihood of an NHL team returning to the Nutmeg State.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conquest of America: A Romance of Disaster and Victory is a futuristic war novel set in USA, 1921, where America is overpowered by European powers like Germany. The subtitle of the book claims to be based on the extracts from the diary of James E. Langston who was a war correspondent of the "London Times." Moffett was concerned with the military unpreparedness of America in the face of growing suspicions about the German army and hence wrote this cautionary tale in the era where future war stories were hugely popular. In this book the hero is Thomas Alva Edison who must save the America from the impending threat of the Great War. Will he or won't he? Read on!
