Freshly minted retiree Irma Abercrombie wasn't looking for drama when she invited Violet Blackheart--an engineer with a serious vitamin D deficiency--for a visit at her island home. But after an armed robbery in town goes terribly wrong, they get pulled into an island intrigue: Was it a simple snatch and grab, or are there other forces at work? And if Irma's so retired, why is there a dead guy in her driveway? Irma's hands might be deadly weapons, but she's all thumbs when it comes to computer problems. Next, she has to figure out how to convince Violet to investigate a technology puzzle that might have been masterminded by someone with a taste for murder. Violet embraces a budding cupcake addiction and day-drinking, while Irma grapples with a bomb threat and wonders how she ended up with a pug as a sidekick...and whether Violet's hiding a few secrets of her own. Irma's headed for a showdown on a luxurious island estate, and she has every intention of dragging Violet along for the ride. Irma Abercrombie wants to save the world. Download or read book Vitamin C written by Alan B. Clemetson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The factors affecting blood vitamin C levels are described in detail in this series. Many factors such as aging, smoking, infection, trauma, surgery, hemolysis, hormone administration, heavy metals, pregnancy, alcohol, ionizing radiation and several medicines have been found to cause a disturbance of ascorbic acid metabolism and to reduce blood vitamin C levels. Indeed, abnormalities of ascorbic acid metabolism, due to factors such as smoking, occur much more frequently than does dietary vitamin C deficiency today. It is now known that low blood vitamin C levels are associated with histaminemia (high blood histamine levels), and also that ascorbate-responsive histaminemia is common in apparently healthy people. High blood histamine levels are believed to cause small hemorrhages within the inner walls of the blood vessels and these may lead to the deposition of cholesterol, as an aberrant form of wound healing. Ascorbic acid not only reduces blood histamine levels, but also aids the conversion of cholesterol to bile acids in the liver. The clinical pathological and chemical changes observed in ascorbic acid deficiency are discussed in detail. Several diseases and disorders associated with low blood vitamin C levels are also described. Possible toxic effects resulting from the oxidation of ascorbic acid are noted, and reasons for the use of D-catechin or other chelating fiber to prevent or minimize the release of ascorbate-free radical are detailed. An excellent reference for physicians, nutritionists and other scientists

Book Catching Ourselves in the Act

Download or read book Catching Ourselves in the Act written by Horst Hendriks-Jansen and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catching Ourselves in the Act uses situated robotics, ethology, and developmental psychology to erect a new framework for explaining human behavior. Rejecting the cognitive science orthodoxy that formal task-descriptions and their implementation are fundamental to an explanation of mind, Horst Hendriks-Jansen argues for an alternative model based on the notion of interactive emergence. Situated activity and interactive emergence are concepts that derive from the new discipline of autonomous agent research. Hendriks-Jansen puts these notions on a firm philosophical basis and uses them to anchor a "genetic" or "historical" explanation of mental phenomena in species-typical activity patterns that have been selected by a cultural environment of artifacts, language, and intentional scaffolding by adults. Situated robotics, allied with techniques and principles from ethology, allows the testing of hypotheses framed in terms of natural kinds that can be grounded through the theory of natural selection. This approach negotiates the "nature versus nurture" dispute in a radically new way. Catching Ourselves in the Act provides a thorough overview of autonomous agent research in America and Europe, focusing in particular on work by such eminent researchers as Rodney Brooks, Pattie Maes, Maja Mataric, and Rolf Pfeifer. It reassesses the basic principles of artificial life and explores the repercussions of autonomous agent research for human psychology and the philosophy of mind, as well as its affinities with the "contextual revolution" in sociology and anthropology. Book The Secret of Success

Download or read book The Secret of Success written by P. Larry Rogers and published by P. Larry Rogers. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my first book in the "Secret" series. The Secret of Success, is the proposition that real peace and happiness result when the whole person has physical, social, financial, and spiritual success. You develop all those qualities to achieve real success. Your whole life is full of mental peace and happiness when your whole person becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Real success is not an accomplishment in just one area but proficiency in all four. Our education system provides instruction for the whole curriculum of life. If you are good at math but cannot speak with proper grammar, your success will be soiled. An entertainer like Elvis Presley may sell two hundred million records and have two hundred million friends but be broke and alone with a drug and spending addiction. The ordinary person focuses on the parts of life they are trying to receive while the successful person focuses on the whole life they are trying to accomplish. The second book in the series is The Secret of Money: Beating Inflation in the 21st Century. It would be a nice complement to this one.

Book Dietary Supplements for the Health and Quality of Cultured Fish

Download or read book Dietary Supplements for the Health and Quality of Cultured Fish written by Heisuke Nakagawa and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper nutrition and feeding are critical components of aquaculture. Effective utilization of well-balanced diet formulations is of utmost importance and influences most aspects of production, including the cost, yield and quality of resulting products, as well as the sustainability of aquacultural practices including potential environmental impacts. In addition to the various required macro- and micro-nutrients, emphasis has been placed on non-nutritive supplements in recent years. These have been found to influence many attributes of freshwater and marine fish, particularly taste and colour, resistance to disease and health benefits to human consumers. This book presents a comprehensive review of the most important nutrients and non-nutritive supplements, using scientific evidence to support the best practices for using these compounds in diet formulations to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of aquaculture. This book is a valuable resource for students and practitioners in aquaculture and fisheries, as well as animal nutrition, feeding and husbandry.
