Book excerpt: In this brilliant and profoundly moving collection of ‘farewell letters’ written by servicemen and women to their loved ones, Siân Price offers a remarkable insight into the hearts and minds of some of the soldiers, sailors and airmen of the past three hundred years. Each letter provides an enduring snapshot of an impossible moment in time – when an individual stares death squarely in the face. Some were written or dictated as the person lay mortally wounded; many were written on the eve of a great charge or battle; others were written by soldiers who experienced premonitions of their death, or by kamikaze pilots and condemned prisoners. They write of the grim realities of battle, of daily hardships, of unquestioning patriotism or bitter regrets, of religious fervor or political disillusionment, of unrelenting optimism or sinking morale – and above all, they write of their love for their family and the desire to return to them one day. Be it an epitaph dictated on a Napoleonic battlefield, a staunch, unsentimental letter written by a Victorian officer, or an email from a soldier in modern day Afghanistan, these voices speak eloquently and forcefully of the tragedy of war and answer that fundamental human need to say goodbye.

Book The Joyce of Everyday Life

Download or read book The Joyce of Everyday Life written by Vicki Mahaffey and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of James Joyce’s genius was his ability to find the poetry in everyday life. For Joyce, even a simple object like a table becomes magical, “a board that was of the birchwood of Finlandy and it was upheld by four dwarfmen of that country but they durst not move more for enchantment.” How might we learn to regain some of the child-like play with language and sense of delight in the ordinary that comes so naturally to Joyce? The Joyce of Everyday Life teaches us how to interpret seemingly mundane objects and encounters with openness and active curiosity in order to attain greater self-understanding and a fuller appreciation of others. Through a close examination of Joyce's joyous, musical prose, it shows how language provides us with the means to revitalize daily experience and social interactions across a huge, diverse, everchanging world. Acclaimed Joyce scholar Vicki Mahaffey demonstrates how his writing might prompt us to engage in a different kind of reading, treating words and fiction as tools for expanding the boundaries of the self with humor and feeling. A book for everyone who loves language, The Joyce of Everyday Life is a lyrical romp through quotidian existence.

Book The Ghost Hunter

Download or read book The Ghost Hunter written by Hans Holzer and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghosts, Holzer says, are people, or parts of people, and are thus governed by emotional stimuli. Ghosts are people haunted by unhappy memories and incapable of escaping from a net of emotional entanglements attendant to the memories. One should remember that an apparition is really a reenactment of an earlier emotional experience. In The Ghost Hunter, famed ghost hunter Dr. Hans Holzer recounts more than 40 real-life ghost stories, including several of his most intriguing cases. This ever-inquisitive researcher probes the history of each of these restless spirits and sometimes even coaxes them out of seclusion. His pursuit of things that go bump in the night takes Holzer to strange haunts. These are just a few of the spirits that you will encounter in The Ghost Hunter: A Revolutionary War soldier who continues to inhabit a house in the hills of New Jersey A Central Park West social-climbing spirit staging a postmortem sit-in because she felt that her neighbors had snubbed her The Bayberry Perfume ghost whose distinctive scent continues to permeate the Philadelphia house that she haunts A lunatic uncle whose demise hasn’t stopped him from making unwelcome visits The tragic Fifth Avenue Ghost who, killed by a romantic rival, remains pinned in a love triangle of 1871 An old manor ghost who drives an entire carriage team of phantom horses

Book Western Intellectuals and the Soviet Union 1920 40

Download or read book Western Intellectuals and the Soviet Union 1920 40 written by Ludmila Stern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-10-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the appalling record of the Soviet Union on human rights questions, many western intellectuals with otherwise impeccable liberal credentials were strong supporters the Soviet Union in the interwar period. This book explores how this seemingly impossible situation came about. Focusing in particular on the work of various official and semi-official bodies, including Comintern, the International Association of Revolutionary Writers, the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, and the Foreign Commission of the Soviet Writers' Union, this book shows how cultural propaganda was always a high priority for the Soviet Union, and how successful this cultural propaganda was in seducing so many Western thinkers.

Book The Anti Heroine on Contemporary Television

Download or read book The Anti Heroine on Contemporary Television written by Molly J. Brost and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Anti-Heroine on Contemporary Television: Transgressive Women, Molly Brost explores the various applications and definitions of the term anti-heroine, showing that it has been applied to a wide variety of female characters on television that have little in common beyond their failure to behave in morally “correct” and traditionally feminine ways. Rather than dismiss the term altogether, Brost employs the term to examine what types of behaviors and characteristics cause female characters to be labeled anti-heroines, how those qualities and behaviors differ from those that cause men to be labeled anti-heroes, and how the label reflects society’s attitudes toward and beliefs about women. Using popular television series such as Jessica Jones, Scandal, and The Good Place, Brost acknowledges the problematic nature of the term anti-heroine and uses it as a starting point to study the complex women on television, analyzing how the broadening spectrum of character types has allowed more nuanced portrayals of women’s lives on television.
