Book The Boys of Dunbar

Download or read book The Boys of Dunbar written by Alejandro Danois and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of a remarkable coach whose superb undefeated high-school basketball team in 1980s Baltimore produced four NBA players and gave hope to a desperate neighborhood and city—“a feel-good story that is timely as well as true” (Glenn C. Altschuler, Florida Courier). As the crack epidemic swept across inner-city America in the early 1980s, the streets of Baltimore were crime ridden. For poor kids from the housing projects, the future looked bleak. But basketball could provide the quickest ticket out, an opportunity to earn a college scholarship and perhaps even play in the NBA. Dunbar High School had one of the most successful basketball programs in the country; in the early 1980s, the Dunbar Poets were arguably the best high school team of all time. Four starting players—Muggsy Bogues, Reggie Williams, David Wingate, and Reggie Lewis—would eventually play in the NBA, an unheard-of success rate. In The Boys of Dunbar, Alejandro Danois revisits the 1981–1982 season with the Poets as the team conquered all its opponents. But more than that, he takes us into the lives of these kids, and especially of Coach Bob Wade, a former NFL player from the same neighborhood who knew that the basketball court, and the lessons his players would learn there, held the key to the future. “[Danois’] tale of the basketball exploits of a handful of high school students in the 1980s shows young men motivated by their coach and other recreation leaders to dream beyond the hardship of their geography” (Bijan C. Bayne, The Washington Post). “Inspirational stories can be found everywhere in high-school sports, but Dunbar and its legendary coach, Bob Wade, stand out” (Booklist). The Boys of Dunbar will leave you cheering every victory.

Book Streetball Is Life

Download or read book Streetball Is Life written by Paul Volponi and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning young adult author Paul Volponi comes the true story of his unforgettable summer spent proving himself as a legitimate New York City streetballer, only later discovering that he had gained a set of skills that would enhance his life off the court, as well. During the sweltering summer of seventeen-year-old Paul Volponi’s life, he had only one goal—he wanted, no, needed to become a legitimate and respected New York City street basketball player. It was a passion that consumed him night and day, and at times even isolated him from his friends and family. So he entered through the gates of the Proving Ground, the roughest streetball yard in the city. It was a place where the fouls resembled felonies, and the atmosphere mirrored that of the Roman Coliseum more than Madison Square Garden. It was where teens and adults contested pickup games with a ferocity seemingly greater than that of the NBA Finals. The Proving Ground was a difficult place to cultivate friendships and an easy environment to make enemies. This is the story of Paul’s summer-long initiation at the Proving Ground. It is truly a streetball testament of a teenager who wanted more than anything else to earn his stripes in streetball society. Only what he didn’t understand at the time was that this experience would deliver to him, as it does today for so many young adults, a set of skills that would enhance his life far beyond the boundaries of a basketball court.

Book You re Doing Great And Other Lies Alcohol Told Me

Download or read book You re Doing Great And Other Lies Alcohol Told Me written by Dustin Dunbar and published by LifeTree Media. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything you know about alcohol is a lie. Dustin Dunbar had it all. A beautiful wife, two sweet baby girls, a degree in psychology, and properties around the world—the building blocks of a nascent real estate empire. All the while, he happily believed every lie alcohol told him: “Real men drink.” “One drink won’t kill you.” “You’re the life of the party.” “You can’t stop.” He believed these lies and many others until it was too late. Because of his addiction, he risked everything he valued most and nearly lost everyone he cared for—until he started to figure out that most of what we experience with alcohol is completely fabricated, a big lie packaged with bright lights and big names to distract us from the truth. Dunbar calls this non-reality “the alcohol matrix,” and it took him years to break out of it and finally start enjoying a life free of alcohol addiction. Just as Holly Whitaker offered women a radical path to sobriety in her New York Times bestselling Quit Like a Woman, Dunbar combines his own experiences with his extensive background in psychology to expose the lies we all too willingly accept about alcohol and interrogates the part culture plays in reinforcing these lies, particularly for men—and shows readers how they too can break free from alcohol addiction. An inspiring, hilarious, and much-needed approach to addiction and self-acceptance, You’re Doing Great!: Debunks the myth that alcohol washes away the pain.Explains the toll alcohol takes on our emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.Illustrates the steps to deal with our problems head-on.Exposes the practices used by advertisers and marketers to entrap us to drink.Proves that AA isn’t the only option for battling alcohol addiction.Teaches readers to activate skills of self-empowerment.Shows us how to enjoy an alcohol-free consciousness and an exciting new chapter in our lives. Filled with entertaining true-life tales, hard-earned wisdom, and easy-to-follow advice for recognizing the truth about alcohol, You’re Doing Great! is a powerful invitation to discover the real you that thrives on the other side of addiction.

Book excerpt: It ought to be just a game, but basketball on the playgrounds of Coney Island is much more than that -- for many young men it represents their only hope of escape from a life of crime, poverty, and despair. In The Last Shot, Darcy Frey chronicles the aspirations of four of the neighborhood's most promising players. What they have going for them is athletic talent, grace, and years of dedication. But working against them are woefully inadequate schooling, family circumstances that are often desperate, and the slick, brutal world of college athletic recruitment. Incisively and compassionately written, The Last Shot introduces us to unforgettable characters and takes us into their world with an intimacy seldom seen in contemporary journalism. The result is a startling and poignant expose of inner-city life and the big business of college basketball.

Book South Asian American Stories of Self

Download or read book South Asian American Stories of Self written by Tasneem Mandviwala and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book acknowledges and discusses the now politically infamous aspects of an American Muslim woman’s life such as Islamophobia and hijab, but it more importantly examines how women actually deal with these obstacles, intentionally shifting the lens to capture a more holistic, nuanced understanding of their human experiences. This text is based on a three-year-long qualitative interdisciplinary cultural and developmental psychology and gender systems study. It uniquely organizes risks, protective factors, and coping mechanisms according to developmental life stages, from teenage to adulthood. Results show how second-generation Muslim American women’s identities develop during adolescence (11-18), emerging adulthood (19-29), and adulthood (30-39) within multiple socio-cultural contexts. Discussions regarding Muslim Americans often erroneously equate “Muslim” with “Arab” or “Middle Eastern.” By focusing on South Asian Muslim Americans, this work bluntly discusses the overlaps of South Asian culture with Islam, an important contribution to the field since the majority of immigrant Muslims in America are of South Asian descent. This study adds nuance and detail to American Muslim girls’ and women’s experiences while fighting misinformation and stereotypes. It is a significant contribution to anthropological developmental psychology and cultural psychology. The focus on a historically academically marginalized population is beneficial to students, researchers, and professionals in the field.

Book To Hell with Fate

Download or read book To Hell with Fate written by Kevin J. Cunningham and published by Untreed Reads. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young love is a myth. It's something we're conditioned to expect by movies and stories. It's something we all wanted but could never find. And even when we get older and know the truth, we still wish, just a little, that we had it. When two young cousins find themselves bored to tears at a family funeral, they find another cousin willing to tell them a little story about his young love: how a simple Valentine's Day gift from a mini-mart became one of the best he'd ever given. It's a fine story on its own, but as the girls dig deeper, they find themselves enveloped in a longer saga, told one story at a time. One about the difference between a crush and love. One that challenges their notions of fate and perfection. One about how our own worst enemies can be ourselves, and how in the end, we're all just a little messed up.
