Book Teaching from Rest

Download or read book Teaching from Rest written by Sarah Mackenzie and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book of Philippians we are told to be anxious over nothing, and yet we are anxious over everything. We worry that our students will be "behind," that they won't score well on the SAT, get into a good college, or read enough of the Great Books. Our souls are restless, anxiously wondering if something else out there might be just a little bit better -- if maybe there is another way or another curriculum that might prove to be superior to what we are doing now. God doesn't call us to this work and then turn away to tend to other, more important matters. He promises to stay with us. He assures us that if we rely on Him alone, then He will provide all that we need. What that means on a practical level is that we have to stop fretting over every little detail. We need to stop comparing. We've got to drop the self-inflated view that we are the be-all-end-all of whether the education we are offering our students is going to be as successful as we hope it is. After all, our job is not to be successful -- success itself is entirely beside the point. It's faithfulness that He wants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a tight, dramatic, two-character, two-act play Ted Allan, one of Canada's best-known playwrights, challenges us to think again about love and guilt, about madness and normalcy. My Sister's Keeper was first produced at the 1976 Lennoxville Festival in Quebec. (an earlier version, entitled 'I've Seen You Cut Lemons,' had been directed by Sean Connery at the Fortune Theatre in London in 1970.) It is a play about sensitivity and about victims; about what we do to each other and particularly about what society does to women; about what makes us able to love and what prevents us from allowing ourselves to love. One day 'schizophrenic' Sarah arrives--to stay--at the London flat of her successful, 'normal' brother. The ensuing confrontations lead us, when we can catch our breath, to ask just who it is that is insane, and why?

From saving his friends, and saving the god of a long extinct religious cult, to saving the entire planet and its population, our hero struggles to save everybody and everything but himself, and then he discovers he needs to save himself the most. Secrets are the foundation of our hero's life and they are the most benefic thing for him, but fighting to reveal them all puts our hero on a path of self-hatred, self-destruction, and self-endarkenment. And nothing goes well for our hero until he decides that he needs to defeat the monster inside himself above anything else. Quote: "Light doesn't kill shadows, doesn't make them disappear, it just blinds you. Shadows are always there, always will be, they are cast by things, that sometimes cannot be disposed of. Ignoring or trying to forget never solved the problem. The problem you have when you always look at every shadow with a panic alertness expecting the monster to come out of it at any moment. Learn to live with shadows around you, with darkness in you. It's not always bad." Sometimes you do not need to defeat, you can also assimilate in order to adapt and grow.

Book Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be

Download or read book Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be written by Lama Surya Das and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2004-08-24 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beloved American Lama, a spiritual leader whose inimitable light and lively universal teaching style has awakened the spirituality of thousands, now shares an enlightened approach to change and loss, dealing with difficult emotions such as fear, grief, and anger, and the role of crisis in uncovering our authentic selves. For many people, recent years have been characterized by profound change, whether it relates to financial upheaval, political shifts, or even massive losses of life to disease and violence. Even on the personal level each person must confront the curves life throws his or her way. Buddhism has a great deal to say about change and impermanence and how to meaningfully deal with it. Change--whether on a large or small scale--provides our most important opportunity for learning about ourselves and the nature of reality. From this essential insight Lama Surya Das has crafted a fulfilling and important path to understanding and healing ourselves and finding peace. Full of personal stories, anecdotes, practical exercises, guided meditations and reflections, and pithy original aphorisms, Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be addresses life's most universal difficulties in a way that is accessible to all. By using memorable concepts such as The Virtues of Adversity, The Pearl Principle ("No inner irritation, no pearl"), and Gaining through Loss, Surya reminds readers that hiding from change and loss is futile. Learning to consciously accept and embrace change leads to a better understanding of ourselves and our own innate divine light.
