Book excerpt: Determine if your drinking is a problem, develop strategies for curbing your intake, and measure your progress with this practical, engaging guide to taking care of yourself. Every day, millions of people drink a beer or two while watching a game, shake a cocktail at a party with friends, or enjoy a glass of wine with a good meal. For more than 30 percent of these drinkers, alcohol has begun to have a negative impact on their everyday lives. Yet, only a small number are true alcoholics--people who have completely lost control over their drinking and who need alcohol to function. The great majority are what Dr. Doyle and Dr. Nowinski call "Almost Alcoholics," a growing number of people whose excessive drinking contributes to a variety of problems in their lives. In Almost Alcoholic, Dr. Doyle and Dr. Nowinski give the facts and guidance needed to address this often unrecognized and devastating condition. They provide the tools to: identify and assess your patterns of alcohol use; evaluate its impact on your relationships, work, and personal well-being; develop strategies and goals for changing the amount and frequency of alcohol use; measure the results of applying these strategies; and make informed decisions about your next steps.

Book excerpt: Would life be better without alcohol? It’s the nagging question more and more of us are finding harder to ignore, whether we have a “problem” with alcohol or not. After all, we yoga. We green juice. We meditate. We self-care. And yet, come the end of a long work day, the start of a weekend, an awkward social situation, we drink. One glass of wine turns into two turns into a bottle. In the face of how we care for ourselves otherwise, it’s hard to avoid how alcohol really makes us feel… terrible. How different would our lives be if we stopped drinking on autopilot? If we stopped drinking altogether? Really different, it turns out. Really better. Frank, funny, and always judgment free, Sober Curious is a bold guide to choosing to live hangover-free, from Ruby Warrington, one of the leading voices of the new sobriety movement. Drawing on research, expert interviews, and personal narrative, Sober Curious is a radical take down of the myths that keep so many of us drinking. Inspiring, timely, and blame free, Sober Curious is both conversation starter and handbook—essential reading that empowers readers to transform their relationship with alcohol, so we can lead our most fulfilling lives.

Book Quit Like a Woman

Download or read book Quit Like a Woman written by Holly Whitaker and published by Dial Press. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An unflinching examination of how our drinking culture hurts women and a gorgeous memoir of how one woman healed herself.”—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Untamed “You don’t know how much you need this book, or maybe you do. Either way, it will save your life.”—Melissa Hartwig Urban, Whole30 co-founder and CEO The founder of the first female-focused recovery program offers a groundbreaking look at alcohol and a radical new path to sobriety. We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but. When Holly Whitaker decided to seek help after one too many benders, she embarked on a journey that led not only to her own sobriety, but revealed the insidious role alcohol plays in our society and in the lives of women in particular. What’s more, she could not ignore the ways that alcohol companies were targeting women, just as the tobacco industry had successfully done generations before. Fueled by her own emerging feminism, she also realized that the predominant systems of recovery are archaic, patriarchal, and ineffective for the unique needs of women and other historically oppressed people—who don’t need to lose their egos and surrender to a male concept of God, as the tenets of Alcoholics Anonymous state, but who need to cultivate a deeper understanding of their own identities and take control of their lives. When Holly found an alternate way out of her own addiction, she felt a calling to create a sober community with resources for anyone questioning their relationship with drinking, so that they might find their way as well. Her resultant feminine-centric recovery program focuses on getting at the root causes that lead people to overindulge and provides the tools necessary to break the cycle of addiction, showing us what is possible when we remove alcohol and destroy our belief system around it. Written in a relatable voice that is honest and witty, Quit Like a Woman is at once a groundbreaking look at drinking culture and a road map to cutting out alcohol in order to live our best lives without the crutch of intoxication. You will never look at drinking the same way again.

Book A Few Beers

    Book Details:

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013-05
  • ISBN : 9781622954827
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book A Few Beers written by Robert Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans spend almost 72 billion dollars per year on alcohol. We are a nation of alcoholics. Three quarters of Americans drink, but only about 5-7% admit to a problem with alcohol. Crime statistics alone say otherwise, but even they are unreliable and vary as much as 100% depending on what sources are cited. Alcoholics abound in our government, law enforcement, the armed services, hospitals, and churches. The author is one of them. Robert Johnson's personal story is not particularly important, though you will find it interesting and informative. What Johnson trusts you will find important is the reason why people are alcoholic and the solution to the problem. Many groups would have us believe that alcoholism is a spiritual malady that afflicts morally defective people. This view is false and misleading. Worse, it demands wrong conclusions about how to solve the problem. Alcoholism is not only an epidemic here, it is a pandemic across the globe claiming millions of lives every year. Every problem drinker has a choice: he can be part of the problem or part of the solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bronze Winner—Best Book from the Beer Writers Guild Experimentation, mystery, resourcefulness, and above all, fun—these are the hallmarks of brewing beer like a Yeti. Since the craft beer and homebrewing boom of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, beer lovers have enjoyed drinking and brewing a vast array of beer styles. However, most are brewed to accentuate a single ingredient—hops—and few contain the myriad herbs and spices that were standard in beer and gruit recipes from medieval times back to ancient people’s discovery that grain could be malted and fermented into beer. Like his first book, Make Mead Like a Viking, Jereme Zimmerman’s Brew Beer Like a Yeti returns to ancient practices and ingredients and brings storytelling, mysticism, and folklore back to the brewing process, including a broad range of ales, gruits, bragots, and other styles that have undeservingly taken a backseat to the IPA. Recipes inspired by traditions around the globe include sahti, gotlandsdricka, oak bark and mushroom ale, wassail, pawpaw wheat, chicha de muko, and even Neolithic “stone” beers. More importantly, under the guidance of “the world’s only peace-loving, green-living Appalachian Yeti Viking,” readers will learn about the many ways to go beyond the pale ale, utilizing alternatives to standard grains, hops, and commercial yeasts to defy the strictures of style and design their own brews.

Book excerpt: Not Alcoholic, But... is an account of my 36 year relationship with alcohol, some of it good, some bad, and how my final year of drinking led to my decision to quit. Even now, several years sober, I still don't think of myself as alcoholic. Why? Because I was able to put controls around my drinking - controls that saved me from losing my job, my partner, my friends - controls that allowed me to have a lot of fun, much of the time. But the simple fact is: my life is so much better now, without the soaring highs and lows, the terrible self-loathing on the 'morning after' the constant looking out for the next drink, the unpredictability of my moods. I can't believe my luck in not having to suffer all of that any more, or my luck that I don't crave the roller-coaster life that I once led. This book is about my journey to a new existence; one without alcohol. It's for anyone who wants to explore what life is like on the other side and how to get there without fuss - seen from the perspective of one who once enjoyed a drink or two. There's no psychobabble in this book, no gimmickry, no tricks of the mind. Just some honest soul searching which anyone can benefit from. If you're looking for a well written, honest, easy-read, then you've definitely found it here...

Book Drink and Be Sober

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vance Thompson

  • Release : 2016-03-18
  • ISBN : 9781530627172
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Drink and Be Sober written by Vance Thompson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drink and Be Sober, Vance Thompson's book, bears an ironic title, the book being not for but against moderate drinking. For example, Mr. Thompson says: "From an economic standpoint the drunkard is non-existent. What 'big business' is fighting today is moderate drinking, the ounce-and-a-half-a-day kind of thing.... It is with the man who can drink and be sober, thank Heaven, that industry is picking a quarrel!" The arraignment of beer and light wines is also interesting. Mr. Thompson declares that to think either of these beverages the cure for drunkenness is unscientific to a degree. France remained sober only so long as she was poor. "It was in my horoscope," says the writer, "to watch for twenty years the growth of the alcoholic habit in France. I saw the nation weary of the too feeble intoxicant of wine and take to strong drink." Mr. Thompson hopes that no one on this side of the water will be deceived by the statements of the California viticulturists, who tell us that California can become a second France in vine culture if only the American people will make markets for its wares by becoming drinkers of wine. There is a chapter on adulteration that is certainly enough to make a man never drink another drop, and then the author, after much more serious and brilliant matter, compilations from here and there, declares that the nation should take the whole bad business into its hands; and then - when the hour strikes - strangle it by national prohibition. It is a brilliant little book, not deep with first-hand scientific research but full of good sense and good things, and an anomaly among its kind, for most works on alcohol are cold science or hot hysteria. This moves among its drab or hectic brothers like a fashionably dressed woman, all epigram, entirely used to society. It would know how to penetrate the world of fashion, lie on the straw tables of a summer verandah or adorn the table of some dainty guest chamber. It is very urbane-and very enlightening. -The Survey, Volume 35

Book excerpt: This is a book of reflections by A.A. members for A.A. members. It was first published in 1990 to fulfill a long-felt need within the Fellowship for a collection of reflections that moves through the calendar year--one day at a time. Each page contains a reflection on a quotation from A.A. Conference-approved literature, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, As Bill Sees It and other books. These reflections were submitted by members of the A.A. Fellowship who were not professional writers, nor did they speak for A.A. but only for themselves, from their own experiences in sobriety. Thus the book offers sharing, day by day, from a broad cross section of members, which focuses on the Three Legacies of Alcoholics Anonymous: Recovery, Unity and Service. Daily Reflections has proved to be a popular book that aids individuals in their practice of daily meditation and provides inspiration to group discussions even as it presents an introduction for some to A.A. literature as a whole.

Book Alcohol addicted or not addicted that is the question

Download or read book Alcohol addicted or not addicted that is the question written by Adam S. Falkensteiner and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is a self-help author who has been on the road to recovery from alcoholism. All you need to stop drinking is a strong will and some important information about addiction. This book contains the condensed knowledge of a "dry" alcoholic and it describes how addiction works and how to stop it. The secret to success is simple to understand and implement. The only thing you need to accept is the following: Alcohol addiction is a disease that cannot be cured! However, you must not use it as an alibi. Never believe in controlled drinking. If you feel the need to control something, you will be controlled by something. Also, do not switch to non-alcoholic beer, wine, etc., as this will not change your behavior pattern, but will continue to reinforce it. Sooner or later, this ends up back in alcoholic beverages. Think about it!
