Download or read book I m Fine But You Appear to Be Sinking written by Leyna Krow and published by featherproof books. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In I’m Fine, But You Appear to Be Sinking the strange and the mundane collide. These are stories of strange experiences set in familiar places, and of familiar experiences set in strange places. Many of the pieces in I’m Fine take place close to home, in suburban neighborhoods, or rural communities. The settings are conventional, yet something unexpected, or even magical, is occurring. In one piece, a couple speculates about random objects that appear without reason in their backyard. In another, neighbors try to figure out if a local meth dealer is keeping a live tiger captive on his property. In other pieces, it’s the setting that’s fantastical, but the characters’ reactions that remain ordinary, like in the titular story where a journalist lost at sea and hunted by a mythical ocean creature admits to struggling with loneliness and isolation in much the same way he does even when he’s safe at home. Although they are not directly linked by any specific character, the pieces in this collection are bound through reoccurring imagery and a shared theme of protagonists in emotional peril. There are unexpected appearances and disappearances, movement of inanimate objects, the search for something lost, the finding of something unusual. There are prophesies, dreams, unidentifiable creatures, and environmental catastrophes on a scale both large and small. There are action figures and octopuses, sullen teenagers and missing cats. At their core, these stories are imbued with mystery, oddity, humor, and empathy. They each stand on their own, but mean considerably more when read together.
Download or read book Remedied written by Amanda Williams and published by Amanda Williams. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This debut coming of age novel follows the story of a gay teenager in Nevada, curious to a fault and coming to terms with the way mental illness affects his life. Oliver Quinn doesn’t want a tutor— after having grown up scared of everything, along with all the bullying at school, he doesn’t want to deal with yet another person being handed a reason to judge him. But his tutor turns out to be Alexander Rayes, a boy he’s had a crush on since his freshman year. So he figures that it can’t be all that bad, and that maybe it’s actually a virtue. Throughout the course of his junior year, Oliver experiences a lot of firsts. More specifically, he experiences falling in love with someone who might be a little more complicated than he’d initially thought. And with the responsibility of falling in love comes the responsibility of growing up, something Oliver isn’t quite sure he’s ready for. As Alex grieves the loss of his father and Oliver tries to understand what he doesn’t know in such a way that makes it almost detrimental to his health, the two find comfort and understanding in each other. With the hope of helping his boyfriend with something he doesn’t want to admit to, Alex slowly reveals his past, though barely sating Oliver’s need to know everything out of his fear of the unknown. Through these revelations, Oliver learns that you can’t save somebody, you can only love them, but nevertheless, he tries. Realistic and relatable, Remedied is based on the struggle of being a mentally ill, gay teenager in high school. Similar to other LGBTQ novels such as Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli and History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera, Remedied highlights the hardships of growing up, changing, and coming to terms with who you are.

The first time, she's fourteen, and escapes a near-fatal car accident with scars, a bum leg, and an addiction to Oxy that'll take years to kick. The second time, she's seventeen, and it's no accident. Sophie and her best friend Mina are confronted by a masked man in the woods. Sophie survives, but Mina is not so lucky. When the cops deem Mina's murder a drug deal gone wrong, casting partial blame on Sophie, no one will believe the truth: Sophie has been clean for months, and it was Mina who led her into the woods that night for a meeting shrouded in mystery. After a forced stint in rehab, Sophie returns home to a chilly new reality. Mina's brother won't speak to her, her parents fear she'll relapse, old friends have become enemies, and Sophie has to learn how to live without her other half. To make matters worse, no one is looking in the right places and Sophie must search for Mina's murderer on her own. But with every step, Sophie comes closer to revealing all: about herself, about Mina---and about the secret they shared.

A successful rodeo star with a string of women behind him, the ICU has given him a chance to stay put instead of constantly running away—from the past, from love, from the blood on his hands. And he’s not going to screw that up, even if it means going back home to Texas to investigate the disappearance of the woman who made him start running in the first place . . . The political exposé of a popular senator should have been Grace Irvine’s story, but she thought it would be good for her best friend Jessie’s career. Now, Jessie is missing and Grace will do anything to find her. But her path keeps crossing with a mysterious and charismatic cowboy who has his own reasons for finding Jessie. And as intrigue draws Grace and Cowboy deeper into danger, passion starts to play by its own rules—making promises it might not be able to keep . . . Download or read book The Mountain of Oblivion written by Adam Choi and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several killing incidents occur in different areas in the United States. A certain Major Berkely shoots and kills fourteen soldiers in the army cafeteria in Texas and tries to kill himself. When asked about the incident, he alleges he has no memory of it. Then, in downtown Chicago, a man with a semi-automatic gun kills around eighteen innocent people in a public library and eventually commits suicide. A unique resemblance is observed from those two killings: the suspects keep repeating the phrases ¿kill¿em all¿ at the shootout. Michael Ackerman, an agent who disguises himself as an army psychologist named Kevin Baleman, witnesses how Major Berkely kills himself while in an army hospital. Before his death, Major Berkely utters ¿kill¿em all¿ and ¿no gun¿- two phrases which seem so familiar to Michael. In the ensuing days, Michael will experience other unexplainable deaths and strange dreams that would confuse him more than ever. But his mounting questions would be answered through his dreams. He would learn of the existence of two after-death places called ¿river of wailing¿ and ¿mountain of oblivion,¿ his true identity, and his rebirth to accomplish a very important mission-to tell the world of the truth behind the 1950 killing.

Download or read book Brutt Or The Sighing Gardens written by Friederike Mayröcker and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: brütt, or The Sighing Gardens is the hallucinatory tale of an obsessive writer’s love affair late in life as told through the daily journal entries of the writer—a montage of relentless observation interspersed with found materials from newspaper articles, literature, and private correspondence. The process of aging and the process of writing are two persistent and carefully intertwined themes, though it is apparent that plot and theme are subordinate to the linguistic experiments that Friederike Mayröcker performs as she explores them. Mayröcker is known for crossing the boundaries of literary forms and in her prose work she creates a hypnotic, slurred narrative stream that is formally seamless while simultaneously overstepping all the bounds of grammar and style. She is always pushing to expose the limits of language and explore its experimental potential, seeking a re-ordering of the world through the re-ordering of words. Her multilayered texts are reminiscent of the traditions of Surrealism and Dadaism and display influences from the works of Beckett, Hölderlin, Freud, and Barthes. Yet, much of Mayrocker’s writing simply has no corollary and the experience of reading Roslyn Theobald’s brilliant translation grants the English-speaking audience an unforgettable encounter with this completely original work.
