Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A National Book Foundation "5 Under 35" Honoree “An enchanting, sparkling book about the many meanings of sisterhood.” —Kristin Iversen, Refinery29 Claire Luchette's debut, Agatha of Little Neon, is a novel about yearning and sisterhood, figuring out how you fit in (or don’t), and the unexpected friends who help you find your truest self Agatha has lived every day of the last nine years with her sisters: they work together, laugh together, pray together. Their world is contained within the little house they share. The four of them are devoted to Mother Roberta and to their quiet, purposeful life. But when the parish goes broke, the sisters are forced to move. They land in Woonsocket, a former mill town now dotted with wind turbines. They take over the care of a halfway house, where they live alongside their charges, such as the jawless Tim Gary and the headstrong Lawnmower Jill. Agatha is forced to venture out into the world alone to teach math at a local all-girls high school, where for the first time in years she has to reckon all on her own with what she sees and feels. Who will she be if she isn’t with her sisters? These women, the church, have been her home. Or has she just been hiding? Disarming, delightfully deadpan, and full of searching, Claire Luchette’s Agatha of Little Neon offers a view into the lives of women and the choices they make.

Download or read book Comprehensive Casebook of Cognitive Therapy written by Frank M. Dattilio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the golden age of cognitive therapy. Its popularity among society and the professional community is growing by leaps and bounds. What is it and what are its limits? What is the fundamental nature of cognitive therapy? It is, to my way of thinking, simple but profound. To understand it, it is useful to think back to the history of behavior therapy, to the basic development made by Joseph Wolpe. In the 1950s, Wolpe astounded the therapeutic world and infuriated his colleagues by finding a simple cure for phobias. The psychoanalytic establishment held that phobias-irrational and intense fear of certain objects, such as cats-were just surface manifesta tions of deeper, underlying disorders. The psychoanalysts said their source was the buried fear in male children of castration by the father in retaliation for the son's lust for his mother. For females, this fear is directed toward the opposite sex parent. The biomedical theorists, on the other hand, claimed that some as yet undiscovered disorder in brain chemistry must be the underlying problem. Both groups insisted that to treat only the patient's fear of cats would do no more good than it would to put rouge over measles. Wolpe, however, reasoned that irrational fear of something isn't just a symptom of a phobia; it is the whole phobia.

Download or read book Doris Day and my search for relatives written by Marianne E. Meyer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mystery of life puzzles all of us. Marianne Meyer had her first out-of-body experience at age two. Not being able to make herself understood led to a seeker's life. The confusing n o t h i n g called time drifts us relentless toward the end. As long as the brain makes connections we can leap back and forth in time. From infancy to middle age and back, the author scavenges tidbits from those times and transfers them to the presence. Shortly after moving from Frankfurt to L. A., Marianne met her great-grandfather on a higher level of consciousness. She was told he had migrated to USA, took on the last name Victor and lived in the Carmel area. He had left his homeland after creating the child of love on Christmas 1901. Wilhelmina Meckes was married in a hurry, in vindication of honor, and on October 5, Maria Hörr was born as a credited 7 month child. A few years ago, Marianne learned about her mother's family relationship with the Carmel resident Doris Day! Both their grandmothers descended from J. J. Mann and M. E. Nollert and grew up in Neckarhäuserhof, a tiny village near Heidelberg. The synchronicity of both her parents' relatives living in Carmel Mrs. Meyer views as an appeal to go forward with searching for her father's family members. She still has a clear vision of her incorporeal ancestor. Will she find a picture of him in photo albums of a Victor family living in or near Carmel? Enthralling, Marianne portrays her exciting life in India, USA, South Pacific, Africa and Europe. Proving prophecy, past lives and synchronizes, Dr. Meyer presents metaphysics as the true science and shows how she heals herself and her pets. She also uncovers how she cracks the mysterious water code via exploring water crystal photos. Marianne wishes men to fast progress on the way of knowledge. That would be likely if scientists would go out on a limb, rid themselves of blinders and examine life without preconceptions just like children. She is inspired by a pioneering spirit and a passionate dedication on the well-being of the people and the animals. Therefore, 50 cents of each sold copy goes to DDAF and two pounds.

Download or read book No Tears for Carol written by Vaughn West Carol Vaughn West and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No tears for Carol" is the story of a courageous woman and her struggle to survive in a world she did not understand or feel she belonged in. Borne into a world of the occult, she escaped only to endure an incestuous childhood marked by terror, and physical and emotional abuse, which locked her away in a traumatic fog until she was seventeen years of age. How much pain and abuse can one person endure? The answer is "endless" as long as she is walking in the arms of her Heavenly Father. This is my story. It is a lifetime of memories, pain, terror and finally freedom. It is a story of a shaky faith in a 'daddy' God who never condemned the times I fell but rewarded me endlessly for the times I allowed Him to gently pick me up and try once more! My life is like a movie, as if I am walking this journey with you. I see no faces in my childhood and I disassociate as though I were merely a spectator looking on. I believe that life is an illusion, a conglomerate of facts we tell ourselves to make it through the day and night. I was a chameleon, taking on the persona of those around me, flowing from one dictator to the next. In retrospect it was the knowledge that I was "invisible," that even the dead dry hay, fed to the cattle, had more value than I did. That was my legacy from my mother! I ask you not to focus on Carol but on Jesus Christ, who walked this journey with me. It was His love and strength that got me through it. God did not want puppets to follow Him around so He gave man free will. The people in my life chose to abuse me. I also chose to abuse myself. But Jesus told me He would, "Restore the years the locust have eaten," and my friend He has done just that. I believe my book will give hope, courage and compassion to understand individuals who have such unfortunate afflictions.
