Book Waiting For Snow In Havana

Download or read book Waiting For Snow In Havana written by Carlos Eire and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A childhood in a privileged household in 1950s Havana was joyous and cruel, like any other-but with certain differences. The neighbour's monkey was liable to escape and run across your roof. Surfing was conducted by driving cars across the breakwater. Lizards and firecrackers made frequent contact. Carlos Eire's childhood was a little different from most. His father was convinced he had been Louis XVI in a past life. At school, classmates with fathers in the Batista government were attended by chauffeurs and bodyguards. At a home crammed with artifacts and paintings, portraits of Jesus spoke to him in dreams and nightmares. Then, in January 1959, the world changes: Batista is suddenly gone, a cigar-smoking guerrilla has taken his place, and Christmas is cancelled. The echo of firing squads is everywhere. And, one by one, the author's schoolmates begin to disappear-spirited away to the United States. Carlos will end up there himself, without his parents, never to see his father again. Narrated with the urgency of a confession, WAITING FOR SNOW IN HAVANA is both an ode to a paradise lost and an exorcism. More than that, it captures the terrible beauty of those times in our lives when we are certain we have died-and then are somehow, miraculously, reborn.

She creates other beings like herself, which she adopts as children. After training them and teaching them how to utilize their powers and become superior beings capable of healing everything and solving any and every conflict, problems arise. Michal begins using her subtle powers of mind-control to deceive Veronica’s children into rebelling against her. Now there are beings just as powerful as Veronica trying to destroy everything. They know her every thought, they can see the future, and they have all the powers that Veronica has. Plus, she loves them more than anything. How does she stop a creature just as powerful as herself without hurting them and proving that this mind-controller was responsible. A more sinister plot unfolds. The Bleeders in Africa are getting stronger and strogner and forming an alliance, besides all of this, the man in charge of running the country, Caophe, who is all the books, has developed a bad sex and drug addiction. Besides all of this, Michal has an even bigger chip she is about to play. She is manipulating Veronica’s children to resurrect an even more powerful project. Sherman’s first project. Michal revives Project Rain and is mind-controlling him. Everything is being blamed on Veronica and her religious empire. Michal corrupts Religious history and conspiracies to make it look like Veronica is an evil dictator while in secret controlling everyone to do evil. One last thing I forgot to mention. Project Rain’s power is the control over the reality of life and death. Whatever he touches, whatever he looks at or breathes on or advances toward, dies. Veronica must face death itself and somehow save the lives of her wicked children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The publication of Porter's letters marks an occasion for a renewed celebration of his painting and an appreciation of his quirky, indeed ornery, personality. Porter was a feisty correspondent, who fearlessly entered the intellectual discourse of his time." ---From the introduction by David Lehman "In this lifetime of letters, Fairfield Porter reveals the complexity and passion of a protagonist in a novel by Dostoevsky or Henry James." ---Jane Freilicher Fairfield Porter (1907-75) has been called by poet John Ashbery "perhaps the major American artist of the century." He was also known as a gifted art critic. Beyond shedding light on his personal views, this collection of Fairfield Porter's letters demonstrates his profound contribution to American art and literature and displays his acumen as a political critic. The letters tell the story of a reserved artist and intellectual, torn between the tensions and pressures he felt among politics, family life, and painting-a man who forged a painting style outside the politically correct artistic perceptions of both left and right. The collection includes letters from Porter's early travels to the Soviet Union, including a description of an interview with Trotsky, as well as some of his later letters to close friends, including Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, Rod Padgett, Larry Rivers, and James Schuyler, among others. While the letters reveal many sides of the brilliant and independent-minded Porter, they also provide a cultural context for the time period and the circle of artists and poets with whom Porter associated. The letters not only tell a story of the artist himself but are also valuable documents of the political and artistic upheavals of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. This rich collection is introduced by poet and critic David Lehman and includes notes by Justin Spring, author of Porter's biography.

Book excerpt: This book uses psychological type as a model for organizing mental health interventions, including assessing how a client’s personality is affected within a specific relationship using the Psychological Type Relationship Inventory and the Psychological Type Relationship Scale. By examining each psychological type characteristic, the book demonstrates how to help a client overcome a psychological type challenge by using techniques drawn from cognitive-behavioral, humanistic, and family therapy approaches. Over 20 techniques are described in explicit how-to format and chapters show the reader how to assess both positive personality characteristics as well as negative or challenging personality characteristics in developing therapy plans. The interdisciplinary nature of the text benefits a wide spectrum of mental health practitioners who are interested in incorporating personality into their case conceptualizations to develop more effective interventions in relationship therapy.
