Book excerpt: You’ve been told a lie, what you know about grandparents is wrong, problematic at its best. Under the duress of traumatic stress, I tried to kill a black cat-crazy-evil on purpose. Yet, it tried to kill me first! Babysitting gigs went everywhere other than smooth. Each day was a “War Zone.” Dracula just showed up on the regular without even a knock on the door before I could invite him in. Neighbors walked around looking like “Zombies” of an unknown planet. Dogs and chickens are humongously gigantic, they tried to eat me/my whole family. My prayers to God is the only thing that saved my life.

Download or read book Wind and Steel written by Lee Kohn and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my fi rst attempt at writing a romantic, adventure, so give me a break here. With that being said, here we go. We’re living in an ever changing world. The American industry is down to its lowest point since the industry evolution of the late 1800’s. Tractors, T.V.s, automobiles, household wares, clothes, shoes, and thousands of other products are all being manufactured overseas by cheap labor. Manufacturing plants in the U.S. are closing or moving to foreign countries in droves. Unemployment will continue to rise. We can blame our Government or overseas labor cost, but the bottom line is the American people. We’re shooting ourselves in the foot. In the process of trying to save a buck, we buy the cheapest products without regard to its consequences. There was a time we were proud to drive and wear American made products. I can remember when the fi rst Asian motorcycles hit the streets. They can build fi ve bikes for the cost of one American machine, but the very name HARLEY DAVIDSON screams out, ‘Made in the U.S.A.!! And that fact along gives me hope that the American people can come to their senses and start demanding American products made right here in the good old U.S.A. using American labor.

When Trish's mother asks her to temporarily move to Possum Creek so she can take care of her ailing grandfather, Trish figures that a change of scenery can't make her situation in life any worse. She wasn't expecting to spend most of her days trying to prevent her grandfather from shooting at the mailman or that her impossibly gorgeous neighbor would decide he wanted to be her first ever one-night-stand. She definitely wasn't expecting that two months in Possum Creek would make her question whether the future she's spent so much time waiting for is really the future she wants.

It permeates the mind of the authors as she investigates ways to combat the disease. She becomes a fierce warrior against the disease. Because of the deep faith in God possessed by the author, the journal becomes instrumental in helping not only her but uses the journal as a means of helping others who maybe questioning Why me? and going through the same insurmountable journey. The spiritually filled journal provides many valuable tips on how to remain serene, healthy, and positive as she maneuvers through chemotherapy and radiation. It gives clues to avoid falling into dangerous routines and false information. The author enjoys soulful southern cooking, which became a lifeline for her very survival. She uses this somber time to write, reflect, and experiment with delicious recipes, which accounted for her positive outcomes and the most satisfying, mouthwatering recipes one would ever hope to devour. Although struck with a horrifying disease, this author took the high road and determined that with God, all things are possible and that nothing could interfere with the life and goals she still needed to conquer. Cancer was only a tool to a much greater means. Her mission was to reach as many people as possible to let them know that God would provide them with life abundantly.

Download or read book Something s Rising written by Silas House and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2009-04-17 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like an old-fashioned hymn sung in rounds, Something's Rising gives a stirring voice to the lives, culture, and determination of the people fighting the destructive practice of mountaintop removal in the coalfields of central Appalachia. Each person's story, unique and unfiltered, articulates the hardship of living in these majestic mountains amid the daily desecration of the land by the coal industry because of America's insistence on cheap energy. Developed as an alternative to strip mining, mountaintop removal mining consists of blasting away the tops of mountains, dumping waste into the valleys, and retrieving the exposed coal. This process buries streams, pollutes wells and waterways, and alters fragile ecologies in the region. The people who live, work, and raise families in central Appalachia face not only the physical destruction of their land but also the loss of their culture and health in a society dominated by the consequences of mountaintop removal. Included here are oral histories from Jean Ritchie, "the mother of folk," who doesn't let her eighty-six years slow down her fighting spirit; Judy Bonds, a tough-talking coal-miner's daughter; Kathy Mattea, the beloved country singer who believes cooperation is the key to winning the battle; Jack Spadaro, the heroic whistle-blower who has risked everything to share his insider knowledge of federal mining agencies; Larry Bush, who doesn't back down even when speeding coal trucks are used to intimidate him; Denise Giardina, a celebrated writer who ran for governor to bring attention to the issue; and many more. The book features both well-known activists and people rarely in the media. Each oral history is prefaced with a biographical essay that vividly establishes the interview settings and the subjects' connections to their region. Written and edited by native sons of the mountains, this compelling book captures a fever-pitch moment in the movement against mountaintop removal. Silas House and Jason Howard are experts on the history of resistance in Appalachia, the legacy of exploitation of the region's natural resources, and area's unique culture and landscape. This lyrical and informative text provides a critical perspective on a powerful industry. The cumulative effect of these stories is stunning and powerful. Something's Rising will long stand as a testament to the social and ecological consequences of energy at any cost and will be especially welcomed by readers of Appalachian studies, environmental science, and by all who value the mountain's majesty—our national heritage.
