Book Ask a Manager

Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Book excerpt: I decided to write this book because there are people with loved ones, relatives, friends, significant others. Husbands and wives, who work in Law-enforcement and they don’t realize the stress of the job can be overwhelming. Even to the point of a change in one’s personality. We as Law-enforcement Officers (male and female), deal with our own problems and everyone else’s. We sometimes don’t notice the change and effects this has on our minds and bodies. We deal with everything from domestic abuse problems to homicide investigations, to SIDS. One of the worst parts of the job for me was seeing the abuse and death of children/kids. It’s also just as bad as working inside of a jail or prison. You see things the average person never see. Sometimes it’s gross to talk about it with your love ones. I hope that by sharing some of my experiences and personal changes in my personality. Will help others to realize that it’s okay to get counseling if you need it. I also hope that my story help love ones to understand the changes that Law- enforcement go through. When I speak of Law-enforcement, I’m not just talking about police and corrections officer. I’m talking about all aspects of Law-enforcement. Deputies, Border patrol, FBI, Secret Service, Marshalls, etc. Oh yeah! And please take that much needed vacation. It does the mind and body good. With love, straight from the heart!

Download or read book Esprit De Corpse written by Thomas Caverly and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2017-12-29 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esprit De Corpse is a book that provides a common sense approach to police work. All police officers face day to day challenges throughout their career in law enforcement. During my service I have worked in the trenches in two of Canada’s provinces and a territory. It has allowed me the insight as to what it takes to meet those challenges. I have also had the fortune of working with officers from other departments that has impressed on me that all police officers are cut from the same cloth. They have altruistic values and a want to give back to their communities. It’s about success and survival in policing regardless of the police service, police department, city, province, state, or country in which you police. All policing agencies will have traditions and legacies that their officers need to be mindful of in order to ensure their force’s longevity.

Book 101 Reasons Why You Should Not Become A Cop

Download or read book 101 Reasons Why You Should Not Become A Cop written by James Richard Warner and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real world of law enforcement often bears little similarity to the action-packed police dramas depicted on television and in the movies. Many people who are drawn into a career in law enforcement have little knowledge about the trials and tribulations faced by police officers in contemporary society. Author James Warner offers an objective point of view on this crisis in his insightful book 101 Reasons Why You Should Not Become A Cop. With a diverse background including over nineteen years of experience as a police officer, traffic officer, police supervisor, and field-training supervisor, Warner delivers an honest portrayal of the negative aspects of law enforcement. He has spent numerous years collecting true-life experiences from present and retired officers-and from ex-police officers who resigned from the force. Some of the stories include: The Heavy Badge Syndrome Injuries on the Job The Quasi-Military Nature of Law Enforcement Marriage Is a Hobby 101 Reasons Why Not To Become A Cop is a valuable resource for anyone considering a career in law enforcement, as well as a source of humor and comfort for veteran officers.

Book The True Test Is When No One Sees

Download or read book The True Test Is When No One Sees written by Robert N D'Ambola and published by Xlibris Us. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone will hate this book. It is based on the course, Ethics for Police Recruits, that Robert D'Ambola has instructed for over 20 years. He has presented this class to almost 5,000 Police Officers. Soon-to-be Police Officers will hate this book because it should scare the hell out of them and make them question why they want to do this job. Veteran cops will hate it because it will remind them of the shit they had to put up with every day, and the challenges they face, while getting no appreciation or recognition. The bosses will hate it because they are the bosses and responsible for a lot of the shit. The politicians will hate it because they make the rules about things they have no clue about and the police ultimately get blamed for. The media will hate it because of their skewed portrayal of the real American heroes of society, to make them out to be the bad guys when they are not. And then there are times the police turn out to be exactly that - the bad guys. The Police Training Commission will hate this book because it exposes the fact that they are running a dog and pony show to make the politicians and insurance companies happy instead of building a truly professional, intelligent, capable, police officer who can deal with the current rigors of the job, while protecting themselve at the same time. The public will absolutely hate this book because they get what they pay for, they have no idea what they are paying for, and they don't know what they truly want from the police. Do they want a warrior or a guardian? The book was not designed to slam any specific group but should be used to improve the entire Law Enforcement instructional model. It is to learn from history so we do not repeat the same mistakes, and continue to pass on The Stupid Gene to the next generation of Law Enforcement Officers. In these turbulent times, Law Enforcement needs to drastically improve in all areas before the entire system as we know it is abolished. This is a raw subject so I have injected my own twisted humor to make it a bit more palatable. Maybe you can handle the truth. Read on. Feel free to hate this book as long as you learn something from it.

Book Bullshit Jobs

Download or read book Bullshit Jobs written by David Graeber and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From bestselling writer David Graeber—“a master of opening up thought and stimulating debate” (Slate)—a powerful argument against the rise of meaningless, unfulfilling jobs…and their consequences. Does your job make a meaningful contribution to the world? In the spring of 2013, David Graeber asked this question in a playful, provocative essay titled “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs.” It went viral. After one million online views in seventeen different languages, people all over the world are still debating the answer. There are hordes of people—HR consultants, communication coordinators, telemarketing researchers, corporate lawyers—whose jobs are useless, and, tragically, they know it. These people are caught in bullshit jobs. Graeber explores one of society’s most vexing and deeply felt concerns, indicting among other villains a particular strain of finance capitalism that betrays ideals shared by thinkers ranging from Keynes to Lincoln. “Clever and charismatic” (The New Yorker), Bullshit Jobs gives individuals, corporations, and societies permission to undergo a shift in values, placing creative and caring work at the center of our culture. This book is for everyone who wants to turn their vocation back into an avocation and “a thought-provoking examination of our working lives” (Financial Times).

John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).
