Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Sebastian "Chany" Almazan was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, on August 9, 1945, the day the atomic bomb was dropped in Nagasaki, Japan. Little did he know the role war was going to play in his life. Chany enjoyed a carefree life as a child in his beach town. He lived like Huckleberry Finn from the pages of Mark Twain. On April 21, 1961, the Bay of Pigs attack failed to liberate Cuba from Communism. His parents decided to look after Chany's future, and they told their fifteen-year-old son that he was going to be "SENT to the USA." Chany arrived in Miami, Florida, on September 12, 1961, as part of "Operation Pedro Pan," a movement created by the Catholic Church in conjunction with the US Government and some antirevolutionaries in Cuba that airlifted over 14,000 unaccompanied children from Cuba to the US in the early sixties. He struggled in Puerto Rico, where he was sent to live with a distant relative. He worked during the day for sixty-five cents an hour at a loading dock while attending evening classes to finish his high school. When he finished high school in 1963, he moved to Virginia to attend Virginia Tech and become an architect. He studied during the day while working at night. He graduated in December of 1968 and was drafted into the US Army in February of 1969. Sebastian did not start living a normal civilian life until 1971. The issues he had to face in order to achieve the "American Dream" are unique and worth reading about....

Book excerpt: Drawing from her work as state folklorist, Emily Hilliard explores contemporary folklife in West Virginia and challenges the common perception of both folklore and Appalachian culture as static, antiquated forms, offering instead the concept of "visionary folklore" as a future-focused, materialist, and collaborative approach to cultural work. With chapters on the expressive culture of the West Virginia teachers' strike, the cultural significance of the West Virginia hot dog, the tradition of independent pro wrestling in Appalachia, the practice of nonprofessional women songwriters, the collective counternarrative of a multiracial coal camp community, the invisible landscape of writer Breece D'J Pancake's hometown, the foodways of an Appalachian Swiss community, the postapocalyptic vision presented in the video game Fallout 76, and more, the book centers the collective nature of folklife and examines the role of the public folklorist in collaborative engagements with communities and culture. Hilliard argues that folklore is a unifying concept that puts diverse cultural forms in conversation, as well as a framework that helps us reckon with the past, understand the present, and collectively shape the future.

Book Sing Me Back Home

Download or read book Sing Me Back Home written by Bill C. Malone and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over fifty years, Bill C. Malone has researched and written about the history of country music. Today he is celebrated as the foremost authority on this distinctly American genre. This new collection brings together his significant article-length work from a variety of sources, including essays, book chapters, and record liner notes. Sing Me Back Home distills a lifetime of thinking about country and southern roots music. Malone offers the heartfelt story of his own working-class upbringing in rural East Texas, recounting how in 1939 his family’s first radio, a battery-powered Philco, introduced him to hillbilly music and how, years later, he went on to become a scholar in the field before the field formally existed. Drawing on a hundred years of southern roots music history, Malone assesses the contributions of artists such as William S. Hays, Albert Brumley, Joe Thompson, Jimmie Rodgers, Johnny Gimble, and Elvis Presley. He also explores the intricate relationships between black and white music styles, gospel and secular traditions, and pop, folk, and country music. Author of many books, Malone is best known for his pioneering volume County Music, U.S.A., published in 1968. It ranks as the first comprehensive history of American country music and remains a standard reference. This compilation of Malone’s shorter—and more personal—essays is the perfect complement to his earlier writing and a compelling introduction to the life’s work of America’s most respected country music historian.

Book Taking Hold of Eternal Life

Download or read book Taking Hold of Eternal Life written by Paul Bird and published by Trumpet Press. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important event of my life occurred during July, 1969, when as an atheist I had an abrupt and totally unexpected encounter with the living God of the universe. Believing, I was thus born again from spiritual death and became by God's grace a 'new creation.' Since then, I have been involved in a number of ministries, traveled much, lived in various countries. My life has been exciting, though not without sadness and tragedy. When I encountered God, I was a cynical, hard-bitten, sarcastic sophist. By His wonderful grace, He has made me (a hopefully productive) member of His kingdom. My consuming interest is to introduce others to the God I know. “For this is eternal life...” Taking Hold Of Eternal Life (1 Timothy 6:12) is what I did after God confronted me on the weekend of my 34th birthday, July 27, 1969. This book tells what led up to that momentous event and then what followed as God in His mercy delivered me from atheism and immediately plunged me into Biblical revelation and ministerial involvement in His kingdom. As the account of my life walking hand-in-hand with Him shows in the pages of this book, God used me in each of the five "callings" listed in Ephesians 4:11. Over the course of forty-five years God has had me involved in numerous churches & various ministries which has resulted in the comments and articles that are also contained in this book. I pray that God uses this book to bless you greatly!
