Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A group of friends fight to choose their own fates in this trope-savvy, self-referential young adult thriller from the acclaimed author of Their Vicious Games, about a demonic force that acts according to horror movie rules in the spirit of the Scream movies. Devon is always being left behind by her genius twin sister, Drew. At this point, it’s a fact of life. But Devon has one last plan before Drew leaves for college a whole year early—The Best Summer Ever. After committing to the bit a little too much, the twins and their chaotic circle of friends learn why you don’t ever mess with a Ouija board if you want to actually survive the Best Summer Ever, and soon find themselves being hunted down by…a demon? But while there’s no mistaking the creeping, venomous figure is not from around here, their method doesn’t feel very demonic at all. In fact, it’s downright human—going after them in typical slasher movie kill order. And that means Devon, the blonde, is up first and her decade-long crush, Yaya, is the Final Girl who must kill or be killed to end the cycle. Devon has never liked playing by anyone else’s rules though, not even a demon’s, and the longer this goes on, the more she feels Drew and Yaya slipping away from her even as she tries to help them all survive. Can they use their horror movie knowledge to flip the script and become the hunters instead of the hunted? Or will their best summer ever be their last?

Although her first job at a white-shoe, Wall Street investment bank is the opportunity of a lifetime, she is not prepared for the magnitude of wealth swirling about her, the long hours and close quarters that infuse her professional relationships with intimacy, nor an unexpected attraction to her boss. And like all great films, Betsabé’s New York dream comes with a twist that challenges her to find a balance between where she came from and where she’s going. Narrated in the retrospective as a letter of wisdom to her unborn son, Daughter of a Promise captures not only Betsabé’s coming of age but also her journey to understand that deep-seated forces such as desire and love are more complicated than she ever could have imagined.

All she wanted was a husband, and it didn't matter what came along with that title. The Lord never intended for women to chase men or for a wife to find her husband. If it's done that way, it's already out of order. This book shows how God can use any situation that He chooses to show Himself mighty. In this story, you will see that He used an abusive husband to push his wife into God's arms. Through obedience and sacrifice, He was able to take her on an amazing, miraculous journey.

Download or read book Out Of The Shadow Of Death written by Lynn Scott and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-08-03 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of struggling with guilt and shame for being associated with a serial killer sitting on death row, a sister comes to grip with the fact that she and all family members of death row inmates are, indeed, victims as well. Although her brother was, indeed, guilty of his crimes and deserved to pay for the lives he took, society placed her into the same category as him and quickly labeled her guilty by association. Bringing public awareness to the loved ones of death row inmates is something that is frowned upon, and families are often warned by their lawyers not to do so, which leads to detrimental health issues for those family members. They are punished not only for being associated with the inmate but also for loving them and standing by their side despite the horrendous crime they committed. The death penalty brings about many more victims when an inmate is executed. Its grasp is so far-reaching, not only for the victims' families and inmates' families but also for so many others placed in a position they did not ask to be in but were so because of the crime our loved ones committed. The weight of carrying that pain as a result of what our loved one has done can sometimes become too much to bear, and because of that, we are not able to grieve the loss of someone we loved. It has been five years since her brother's execution, and although the healing process has been slow, by publicly sharing her journey with her brother, she hopes to help others begin their healing process as well.

Download or read book Maiz Y Coca Cola written by Diane Terezakis and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-05-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether sharing knowledge attained through a sacred plant ritual, the romance she finds with a leader of the Huaorani, or the tarantulas that frighten her while she bathes, Diane Terezakis authentically shares her experiences as if unashamedly talking to a best friend. Dianes quest for the elusive, yet eclectic state of enlightenment is an inner and outer journey, where she seeks to acquire shamanic wisdom as well as to learn about herself, and although she has a game plan in mind, Diane follows the path that the Universe governs. Part One: Civilization, chronicles the introductory voyage that takes the author through the Ecuadorian Amazon and Andes, meeting shamans she wants to return and study with, the indigenous and the gringos she befriends along the way, the scrapes she gets into, and the reflections on significant episodes in her life. In Part Two: Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, the authors mentor, a shaman in the Ecuadorian Andes, Dr. Valentin Hampejs, helps point the way toward other medicine men for her to supplement her studies with after her disappointing stay with the Secoya shaman, Don Cesario. Enlightening rituals with Dr. Hampejs, a romantic relationship with the Huaorani, Moi, and fun times with her quasi-cousins help balance her disappointment. Chauvinism, greed, and alcohol have marred many of the medicine men that the author finds. Journeying through the Andes while El Ninos ravishing of roads has made travel dangerous, Terezakis precariously makes her way into the Peruvian Andes, plagued by recurring dreams with important messages that eventually lead her back home. Elixir qualities aside, inhabitants of the Amazon jungle and the Andes Mountains (symbolized by Maiz) are becoming perpetually Westernized (symbolized by Coca-Cola emblems throughout South America), and the terrain is sadly changing. Oil companies decimate the Amazon daily, and cultures in both vicinities are losing their hold. As if catching fleeting moments on film, Diane attempts, through her memoir, to immortalize the beauty of the jungle and the mountains while capturing comic moments, vulnerable, endearing episodes, thought-provoking tragedies, and painful disillusionment. Dianes passages weave into an unforgettable scrapbook of her travels in South America.

Download or read book The Punk Rock Queen of the Jews written by Rossi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Rossi’s wild, queer coming-of-age story. Rossi was taught only to aspire to marry a nice Jewish boy and to be a good kosher Jewish girl. At sixteen she flowers into a rebellious punk-rock rule-breaker who runs away to seek adventure. Her freedom is cut short when her parents kidnap her and dump her with a Chasidic rabbi—a “cult buster” known for “reforming” wayward Jewish girls—in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Rossi spends the next couple of years in a repressive, misogynistic culture straight out of the nineteenth century, forced to trade in her pink hair and Sex Pistols T-shirt for maxi skirts and long-sleeved blouses and endure not only bone-crunching boredom but also outright abuse and violence. The Punk-Rock Queen of the Jews is filled with wonderfully rich characters, hilarious dialogue, and keen portraits of the secretive hothouse Orthodox world and the struggling New York City of the 1980s: dirty, on the edge, but fully vital and embracing.
