Book I Love Myself and the Feeling is Mutual God is confused He thinks He s Pieter Omnibus

Download or read book I Love Myself and the Feeling is Mutual God is confused He thinks He s Pieter Omnibus written by Johannes Pieter Overduin and published by Uitgever Repro & Design. This book was released on 2010 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Omnibus: I love myself... and the feeling is mutual/God is confused, He thinks He's Pieter I love myself... and the feeling is mutual Pieter Overduin (Rotterdam, 1969) has suffered from manic-depression for over ten years now. During that time he has kept a diary, consisting of short fragments from his daily life. Probing, moving and at times hilariously funny, Mr Overduin writes about the first signs of the illness and the way he has dealt with it since then. He went through very difficult times for a considerable amount of time but after that he managed to pick himself up again. He also shows what effect the illness had on his family, how the medication affected him and how it enables him to lead an independent life. But without the support of the people closest to him, he would not have made it. God is confused, He thinks He's Pieter Spring, 2004. Pieter enters his publisher's office. 'I've got a new manuscript.' 'Oh no, Pieter, please tell me it's not about manic-depression again.' 'It is.' 'Then it must be very special.' 'It is.' 'In what way?' 'It includes personal accounts of people who are involved in my life.' 'About their feelings and thoughts during your manic episodes?' 'Exactly.' 'That must be very confronting!' 'It is. Why don't you read it and find out.' Again, Pieter Overduin has written a very interesting book. He describes how he suffered from a manic episode after the publication of his first book, in which he believed himself to be Gandhi and God, respectively. The personal accounts of his family, friends and former colleagues also show the other side, how a manic-depressive's illness affects the people closest to him. To them, it feels like a life sentence as well. Just like he did with his first book I love myself... and the feeling is mutual, Pieter has written a fascinating and valuable work. It's written from the heart and very funny.

At the same time, many intuitively feel a sense of reverence and awe in the world. Can we find a new way to talk about God? Pastor and New York Times bestselling author Rob Bell does here for God what he did for heaven and hell in Love Wins: he shows how traditional ideas have grown stale and dysfunctional and reveals a new path for how to return vitality and vibrancy to how we understand God. Bell reveals how we got stuck, why culture resists certain ways of talking about God, and how we can reconnect with the God who is with us, for us, and ahead of us, pulling us forward into a better future—and ready to help us live life to the fullest.

Book excerpt: Why does the allegiance that radical terrorists give to their false cause exceed the allegiance that most Christians today give to Jesus Christ? In Insurgence, bestselling author Frank Viola presents a radical proposal for Christians. Namely, that we have lost the explosive, earthshaking gospel of the kingdom that Jesus, Paul, and the other apostles preached. Viola argues that we've lost this dynamic, titanic, living gospel and exchanged it for a gospel of religious duty or permissiveness and "easy believism." In today's politically charged era, Christians on the progressive left as well as the conservative right both equate their particular viewpoints with the kingdom of God. Viola challenges and dismantles these perspectives, offering a fresh and revolutionary look at the gospel of the kingdom. Viola writes with gripping power, challenging Christians to embrace an unparalleled allegiance to Jesus Christ and his kingdom. This high-octane message is being reclaimed today, launching a spiritual insurgence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our time nobody is content to stop with faith but wants to go further. It would perhaps be rash to ask where these people are going, but it is surely a sign of breeding and culture for me to assume that everybody has faith, for otherwise it would be queer for them to be . . . going further. In those old days it was different, then faith was a task for a whole lifetime, because it was assumed that dexterity in faith is not acquired in a few days or weeks. When the tried oldster drew near to his last hour, having fought the good fight and kept the faith, his heart was still young enough not to have forgotten that fear and trembling which chastened the youth, which the man indeed held in check, but which no man quite outgrows. . . except as he might succeed at the earliest opportunity in going further. Where these revered figures arrived, that is the point where everybody in our day begins to go further.

Book Against Eunomius

  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Against Eunomius written by St. Basil of Caesarea and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basil of Caesarea is considered one of the architects of the Pro-Nicene Trinitarian doctrine adopted at the Council of Constantinople in 381, which eastern and western Christians to this day profess as ""orthodox."" Nowhere is his Trinitarian theology more clearly expressed than in his first major doctrinal work, Against Eunomius, finished in 364 or 365 CE. Responding to Eunomius, whose Apology gave renewed impetus to a tradition of starkly subordinationist Trinitarian theology that would survive for decades, Basil's Against Eunomius reflects the intense controversy raging at that time among Christians across the Mediterranean world over who God is. In this treatise, Basil attempts to articulate a theology both of God's unitary essence and of the distinctive features that characterize the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--a distinction that some hail as the cornerstone of ""Cappadocian"" theology. In Against Eunomius, we see the clash not simply of two dogmatic positions on the doctrine of the Trinity, but of two fundamentally opposed theological methods. Basil's treatise is as much about how theology ought to be done and what human beings can and cannot know about God as it is about the exposition of Trinitarian doctrine. Thus Against Eunomius marks a turning point in the Trinitarian debates of the fourth century, for the first time addressing the methodological and epistemological differences that gave rise to theological differences. Amidst the polemical vitriol of Against Eunomius is a call to epistemological humility on the part of the theologian, a call to recognize the limitations of even the best theology. While Basil refined his theology through the course of his career, Against Eunomius remains a testament to his early theological development and a privileged window into the Trinitarian controversies of the mid-fourth century.

Book Lowside of the Road

Download or read book Lowside of the Road written by Barney Hoskyns and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his trademark growl, carnival-madman persona, haunting music, and unforgettable lyrics, Tom Waits is one of the most revered and critically acclaimed singer-songwriters alive today. After beginning his career on the margins of the 1970s Los Angeles rock scene, Waits has spent the last thirty years carving out a place for himself among such greats as Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Like them, he is a chameleonic survivor who has achieved long-term success while retaining cult credibility and outsider mystique. But although his songs can seem deeply personal and somewhat autobiographical, fans still know very little about the man himself. Notoriously private, Waits has consistently and deliberately blurred the line between fact and fiction, public and private personas, until it has become impossible to delineate between truth and self-fabricated legend. Lowside of the Road is the first serious biography to cut through the myths and make sense of the life and career of this beloved icon. Barney Hoskyns has gained unprecedented access to Waits’s inner circle and also draws on interviews he has done with Waits over the years. Spanning his extraordinary forty-year career from Closing Time to Orphans, from his perilous “jazzbo” years in 1970s LA to such shape-shifting albums as Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs to the Grammy Award winners of recent years, this definitive biography charts Waits’s life and art step by step, album by album. Barney Hoskyns has written a rock biography—much like the subject himself—unlike any other. It is a unique take on one of rock’s great enigmas.
