Book Foreverland

Download or read book Foreverland written by Heather Havrilesky and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Recommended Read from: Good Morning America • Good Housekeeping • Esquire • Shondaland • Atlanta Journal-Constitution • The Week • Lit Hub • Publishers Weekly An illuminating, poignant, and savagely funny examination of modern marriage from Ask Polly advice columnist Heather Havrilesky If falling in love is the peak of human experience, then marriage is the slow descent down that mountain, on a trail built from conflict, compromise, and nagging doubts. Considering the limited economic advantages to marriage, the deluge of other mate options a swipe away, and the fact that almost half of all marriages in the United States end in divorce anyway, why do so many of us still chain ourselves to one human being for life? In Foreverland, Heather Havrilesky illustrates the delights, aggravations, and sublime calamities of her marriage over the span of fifteen years, charting an unpredictable course from meeting her one true love to slowly learning just how much energy is required to keep that love aflame. This refreshingly honest portrait of a marriage reveals that our relationships are not simply “happy” or “unhappy,” but something much murkier—at once unsavory, taxing, and deeply satisfying. With tales of fumbled proposals, harrowing suburban migrations, external temptations, and the bewildering insults of growing older, Foreverland is a work of rare candor and insight. Havrilesky traces a path from daydreaming about forever for the first time to understanding what a tedious, glorious drag forever can be.

Book excerpt: “As far as neatly and efficiently chronicling African Americans and the importance of their hair, Hair Story gets to the root of things.” —Philadelphiaweekly.com Hair Story is a historical and anecdotal exploration of Black Americans’ tangled hair roots. A chronological look at the culture and politics behind the ever-changing state of Black hair from fifteenth-century Africa to the present-day United States, it ties the personal to the political and the popular. Read about: Why Black American slaves used items like axle grease and eel skin to straighten their hair. How a Mexican chemist straightened Black hair using his formula for turning sheep’s wool into a minklike fur. How the Afro evolved from militant style to mainstream fashion trend. What prompted the creation of the Jheri curl and the popular style’s fall from grace. The story behind Bo Derek’s controversial cornrows and the range of reactions they garnered. Major figures in the history of Black hair are presented, from early hair-care entrepreneurs Annie Turnbo Malone and Madam C. J. Walker to unintended hair heroes like Angela Davis and Bob Marley. Celebrities, stylists, and cultural critics weigh in on the burgeoning sociopolitical issues surrounding Black hair, from the historically loaded terms “good” and “bad” hair, to Black hair in the workplace, to mainstream society’s misrepresentation and misunderstanding of kinky locks. Hair Story is the book that Black Americans can use as a benchmark for tracing a unique aspect of their history, and it’s a book that people of all races will celebrate as the reference guide for understanding Black hair. “A comprehensive and colorful look at a very touchy subject.” —Essence

Book excerpt: Over 20 million women in the United States alone, are suffering from some type of hair loss. That's why it is so important for stories like mine to be heard. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of hair loss in women. This type of hereditary hair loss can begin any time after puberty and usually occurs, if at all, before the age of forty. For me it began when I was 28. In the book I share with you about how my hair loss began, the emotional effects of hair loss ranging from anxiety and depression, to frustration and poor self-esteem. I also feature the work of the stylists I have seen over the years; the breakdown of thousands of dollars I have spent, and recently deciding to have permanent cosmetics for my eyebrows. I want to thank my family and friends for the support they have given me over the last eighteen years. They have been major influencers in helping me throughout every stage of alopecia. Writing this book was empowering and made me feel like everything I have been through was worth it. Most importantly, I hope that this book will help others living with alopecia.

Book excerpt: Love/Hate By Dorothy Stoder Boekemeier Love/Hate began when author Dorothy Stoder Boekemeier was listening to local and national television news. It seemed to her there was a surprising number of murders and suicides. What prompted a person to kill one’s partner? Then, facing either no parole, life imprisonment, or a lethal needle, turn the gun on themselves? We know love can turn to hate – but, does hate ever turn to love? Boekemeier does not think so; hate is too corrosive and too controlling.

Book Spaghetti in My Hair

Book excerpt: When Clare Stimpson turns-up in Modena, a beautiful city in Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy, to teach English, little does she know that she will fall in love with the country and its people, and stay there for the next four years. Clare was inspired by her mother, whose stories of her hitchhiking adventures in Sicily in 1949, fired her imagination. In the mid 1970s she decides to leave her teaching job in London and taste the dolce vita for herself. Spaghetti in my Hair tells the story of the Italian characters that Clare met. It explores some of the magical cities of Emilia-Romagna and other stunning regions of Italy. The book touches on Italian family life, the food and habits of the nation and the unstable, political atmosphere of the time. Returning to England but feeling nostalgic for the Italian experience, Clare returns to teach E.F.L. in the sublime coastal resort of San Remo on the Ligurian Riviera. This eventually leads her back to Modena, a place she has grown to know and love. Interwoven throughout the book are stories of adventures and mishaps experienced by Clare and her friends and family. The central part of the story tells the tale of an epic journey across Italy in a small red V.W. called Doris when Clare and three other girls experience many hilarious adventures whilst driving south as far as Gargano in the region of Puglia. The final part of the story goes back in time to 1949 when Clares intrepid mother and her friend, hitchhiked to Sicily a no-mans land in those days. She recounts the tales that her mother passed down to her, including a memorable stay in jail, when the two English girls were mistaken for accomplices of the notorious bandit, Giuliano Salvatore. Spaghetti recipes included add a large glass of wine or two!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] splendid collection . . . By turns wry, tender, pointed, and laugh-out-loud funny.” —Publishers Weekly “Untangles the many truths about hair, and the lives we lead underneath it.” —Pamela Druckerman, author of Bringing Up Bébé Ask a woman about her hair, and she just might tell you the story of her life. Ask a whole bunch of women about their hair, and you could get a history of the world. Surprising, insightful, frequently funny, and always forthright, the essays in Me, My Hair, and I are reflections and revelations about every aspect of women’s lives from family, race, religion, and motherhood to culture, health, politics, and sexuality. They take place in African American kitchens, at Hindu Bengali weddings, and inside Hasidic Jewish homes. The conversation is intimate and global at once. Layered into these reminiscences are tributes to influences throughout history: Jackie Kennedy, Lena Horne, Farrah Fawcett, the Grateful Dead, and Botticelli’s Venus. The long and the short of it is that our hair is our glory—and our nemesis, our history, our self-esteem, our joy, our mortality. Every woman knows that many things in life matter more than hair, but few bring as much pleasure as a really great hairdo.
