Book The Day Hope and History Rhymed in East Timor

Download or read book The Day Hope and History Rhymed in East Timor written by Pat Walsh and published by Kepustakaan populer gramedia. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, in a remote corner of the world, something almost miraculous happened. After 500 years of colonialism, the political stars finally aligned and the people of Timor-Leste, written off as losers in the face of irreversible odds, successfully voted for freedom. Twenty years on, Pat Walsh remembers the day like it was yesterday. In this colourful collection of stories about Timor-Leste, he also draws on his many years living in Dili to recall with wry affection the city’s traffic, roosters and a motley array of characters. The latter range from a Norwegian bishop to a cockfight promoter, an Australian called Dagg, a honey seller, a cat with only six lives, a girl called Menahaha, and two intellectual giants whose contributions to their human rights are largely unknown in Timor-Leste. Believing that the past is a friend to lean on, not an enemy, he also takes the opportunity to remind the Indonesian military of their failings. But, in the same vein, he also laments the futile loss of Indonesian lives, the damage to Indonesia’s dignity, and the subversion of the rules-based international order that marked the 24 year occupation. Written with touches of humour, The Day Hope and History Rhymed in East Timor is a personal, insightful, and sometimes whimsical, set of narratives that fills a gap between the academic and the trivial on this endearing, but improbable, new nation.

Book excerpt: On 30th August 1999, the East Timorese people voted overwhelmingly in a United Nations sponsored referendum for independence from Indonesia. This was an unbelievable win by an oppressed people. Even the most optimistic person would never have dreamed that independence could happen so quickly after years of struggle for a seemingly impossible cause. This compilation provides the opportunity for thirteen outspoken East Timorese women to tell their life stories: what it was like living in a Portuguese colony; how they were affected by the Indonesian invasion; what day to day life was like under the occupation or in the diaspora; how they contributed to the resistance; and how they have adapted to the stark contrast of independence. These are the stories of Céu Lopes Federer, Dulce Vitor, Maria Dias, Laura Soares Abrantes, Domingas 'Micato' Fernandes Alves, Cesarina Rocha, Carolina do Rosário, Mica Barreto, Lucia Lobato, Isabel 'Beba' Sequeira, Ina Varella Bradridge, Luisa Ferreira Exposto and Filomena Reis. 'These ... are the stories of individual women, but much more than that, they document the recent history of the world's newest nation, Timor-Leste... All the stories are of resistance, adaptation and survival... [and] inspire faith in the power of Timorese women to effect positive change of the kind that will transform lives and lead Timor-Leste to a future of health, dignity and wellbeing for all of its citizens.' - Kirsty Sword Gusmão. 'My story starts in 1975 in Portuguese East Timor. At this time East Timor in its innocence knew nothing of the ravages soon to be inflicted. It was a sleepy little colonial island, with whitewashed buildings, and drinkable water from every tap, that everyone back then took for granted.' - Cesarina Rocha.

Book Historical Dictionary of East Timor

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of East Timor written by Geoffrey C. Gunn and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-12-18 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, located at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago. East Timor was among the last of colonial territories to become independent, and it actually had to be liberated twice. First, after more than four centuries of Portuguese colonial rule, it achieved independence in 1975 only to be invaded and occupied by Indonesia. After a blood-soaked occupation of 24 years and following intense international pressure, the Jakarta-regime only grudgingly allowed East Timor to form a nation of its own in 1999. Since then, the new state has faced further armed clashes and is only now able to seriously engage in nation-building. Historical Dictionary of East Timor relates the turbulent history of this country through a chronology, an introductory essay, an expansive bibliography, and over 200 cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, events, places, organizations, and other aspects of East Timor history from the earliest times to the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges facing an independent East Timor are particularly acute. It is not only one of the poorest nations on earth but the terrible events of 1999 have also destroyed much of the countrys buildings and infrastructure, as well as the nations bureaucratic and commercial capacity. The decisions and the policy framework adopted in the early years by the leaders of this new nation will be critical. This book is an original work written by experts and well-known specialists in the field. It assembles all the latest information about the economy, assesses future policy options, and draws on lessons of international experience for this new nation. It is perhaps the only book about East Timor with this coverage and will be invaluable to those who are interested in developments in the region.

Book Land and Life in Timor Leste

Download or read book Land and Life in Timor Leste written by Andrew McWilliam and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the historic 1999 popular referendum, East Timor emerged as the first independent sovereign nation of the 21st Century. The years since these momentous events have seen an efflorescence of social research across the country drawn by shared interests in the aftermath of the resistance struggle, the processes of social recovery and the historic opportunity to pursue field-based ethnography following the hiatus of research during 24 years of Indonesian rule (1975-99). This volume brings together a collection of papers from a diverse field of international scholars exploring the multiple ways that East Timorese communities are making and remaking their connections to land and places of ancestral significance. The work is explicitly comparative and highlights the different ways Timorese language communities negotiate access and transactions in land, disputes and inheritance especially in areas subject to historical displacement and resettlement. Consideration is extended to the role of ritual performance and social alliance for inscribing connection and entitlement. Emerging through analysis is an appreciation of how relations to land, articulated in origin discourses, are implicated in the construction of national culture and differential contributions to the struggle for independence. The volume is informed by a range of Austronesian cultural themes and highlights the continuing vitality of customary governance and landed attachment in Timor-Leste.

Book Transformations in Independent Timor Leste

Download or read book Transformations in Independent Timor Leste written by Susana de Matos Viegas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1999 was a decisive year in the long history of the people of Timor-Leste, whose future was open when they voted for independence in a UN-sponsored referendum. Its results left no doubt that the Timorese considered themselves to be a nation wishing to have their own state, which they would rule. This book examines a vast array of transformations that have taken place over the past decades. It puts forward the idea of "cohabitations", which aims at inscribing the mutual influences arising from the existence of distinct social processes not only side by side but in their mutual influences and entanglements, sometimes resulting from effective clashes, some others from peaceful manipulation of social and cultural differences. From this analytical viewpoint of evolving power dynamics of cohabitations, experts in the field investigate issues that have been contentious in the recent past and analyse the challenges that present-day Timor-Leste is facing. Structured in three parts, the contributions address issues of governance, land, as well as the transformation in the traditional culture including conceptions about identity and exchange, and transformations in the ritual and religious experiences of becoming a nation rooted in self-determination. For the first time bringing together original contributions by the most notable experts on Timor-Leste in a cohesive and comprehensive way, the book will be of interest to academics in the field of Southeast Asian Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Law Studies, History and Political Science.
