Download or read book Jujitsu for Christ written by Jack Butler and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Butler's Jujitsu for Christ—originally published in 1986—follows the adventures of Roger Wing, a white, born-again Christian and karate instructor who opens a martial arts studio in downtown Jackson, Mississippi, during the tensest years of the civil rights era. Ambivalent about his religion and his region, he befriends the Gandys, an African American family—parents A. L. and Snower Mae, teenaged son T. J., daughter Eleanor Roosevelt, and youngest son Marcus—who has moved to Jackson from the Delta in hopes of greater opportunity for their children. As the political heat rises, Roger and the Gandys find their lives intersecting in unexpected ways. Their often-hilarious interactions are told against the backdrop of Mississippi's racial trauma—Governor Ross Barnett's “I Love Mississippi” speech at the 1962 Ole Miss–Kentucky football game in Jackson; the riots at the University of Mississippi over James Meredith's admission; the fieldwork of Medgar Evers, the NAACP, and various activist organizations; and the lingering aura of Emmett Till's lynching. Drawing not only on William Faulkner's gothic-modernist Yoknapatawpha County but also on Edgar Rice Burroughs's high-adventure Martian pulps, Jujitsu for Christ powerfully illuminates vexed questions of racial identity and American history, revealing complexities and subtleties too often overlooked. It is a remarkable novel about the civil rights era, and how our memories of that era continue to shape our political landscape and to resonate in contemporary conversations about southern identity. But, mostly, it's very funny, in a mode that's experimental, playful, sexy, and disturbing all at once. Butler offers a new foreword to the novel. Brannon Costello, a scholar of contemporary southern literature and fan of Butler's work, writes an afterword that situates the novel in its historical context and in the southern literary canon.

Download or read book The Complete Kano Jiu Jitsu Judo written by H. Irving Hancock and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-16 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best guide to learning jiu-jitsu ever written in English, this is the most comprehensive study available. It describes the authentic form of judo developed in the late 19th century by Professor Jiguro Kano — not the many imitations often called by this name. Officially recognized by the Japanese government as the preeminent school of jiu-jitsu, the Kano system was the method in which Japanese armed forces and police were trained. The complete system of 160 holds and throws is clearly explained, with 487 photographs and four charts providing further clarification. Pressure points, balance, falling, and every other important aspect receives full and complete treatment. The first section presents 60 "tricks" of combat in strict sequence that prepare for part two, in which readers learn how to apply the advantages of the tricks they've learned. The third section deals with highly scientific tricks of combat, by which an opponent may be incapacitated — and the methods of kuatsu, or resuscitation, by which a fallen opponent may be revived. Martial arts students at every level of experience will find this classic guide a source of valuable information and instruction.
Download or read book Tapmonster written by Bakari Akil II, Ph.D. and published by Academic Group Publishing (BRAII-owner). This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing in the world like grappling! It is primal and in its very essence it is what life is all about; the chase, fun, struggle and survival. It teaches you how to cope with trying situations; teaches you to always search for options and that you can triumph even when the odds are against you. This combat art puts you on the Quixotic hunt for the real you, the champ lurking inside. It wants you to find that inner beast that allows you to rip off your shirt, look your opponent in the eye and utter those immortal fighting words made famous by Kimbo Slice, “Run it!” And that is the spirit, in which this book was written. "Tapmonster" was written for that grappler who is looking for an extra edge and alternative approaches to grappling. In my decade of grappling, I have used many ideas to increase my skills. And since my inspiration has come from many sources, I did not hesitate to include ideas from academic research, other sports and from the ordinary man on the street in this book. I also know that the best way to learn is from those who do it the best. That is why Tapmonster is also filled with ideas from the champions of our sport. Tapmonster covers: -How to deal with FNGs -The Pump Fake -The Hands Off Approach -Snatching and Tripping -Ambidextrous Thinking -Shaquille O'Neal and Grappling -The Importance of Gimmicks -Belt Chasing -Grappling Finance -How the movie Money Ball can help your grappling -ADCC and BJJ World Champ, Robert Drysdale's key to training -What Felipe Costa (BJJ World Champion) says about getting good -How to use the flipped classroom in the grappling environment -How does Tito Ortiz’s thoughts on MMA relate to grappling? -The Power of Love and Hate in Grappling -What can Arnold Schwarzenegger do for your grappling game? -What’s the secret behind BJJ World Champ, JT Torres’s smile? -What made Eddie Bravo so confident that he would whisper, “Are you ready?” into an opponent’s ear? And much more, so much more! -------- Reader Review BUY THIS BOOK!! I don’t ordinarily write reviews, but I am notorious for reading and using reviews to make purchases. This will be my second review ever. That alone should tell you that this book was able to motivate me to actually write this! Wherever you are at in your grappling game, BUY THIS BOOK! I am currently preparing for my first BJJ tourney, had a horrible class and could not stop thinking about all I had done wrong earlier on the mats. After about 3 hours of tossing and turning I thought maybe I’ll find a book of some kind, some nugget of wisdom that will rescue “whatever” BJJ game I had left. I had purchased one of this author’s other books and this one seemed somewhat new. While I understand that this review seems contrived in that this book ended up being just what I needed, but it truly was. I don’t know if it will rescue my game, but it assuredly got me motivated to get back to work on it!! Whatever level in your grappling journey, this book will help you. It will more specifically tell you things that no one ordinarily talks about, on or off the mats. It’s a quick read, but the true take away is that you’re not alone in the feelings, the blood, sweat and tears and just plain difficulty that is the grappling arts! You will not be disappointed with this purchase! And though I haven’t written reviews yet, I have also purchased "20 ways to improve your Grappling," and "Grappling for Newbies," both by this author, both highly, highly recommended! Hope this review helps! Walt -- Tapmonster is funny, thought provoking, entertaining and inspiring.

Download or read book Japanese Jiu jitsu written by Darrell Max Craig and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With extensive, step-by-step photographs and instructions, this jiu-jitsu guide is an effective tool for mastering this ancient martial art. The original Japanese martial art developed by the elite samurai class during Japan's feudal era, Jiu-jitsu is the forerunner of Judo and the precursor of today's ultimate fighting styles, such as mixed martial arts (MMA). For centuries, this method of unarmed self-defense proved so successful in combat that it was kept secret and taught only to a select few. Based on the author's study with instructors at the Tokyo police academy, this martial arts book presents all the traditional techniques of Jujitsu, also known as Jiu-jitsu. These techniques teach you valuable restraining methods that force your opponent to submit without abuse by using pressure points. It shows you tips for search and seizure, and the almost extinct art of Hojojutsu--how to tie people up without using any knots. Japanese Jiu-jitsu: Secret Techniques of Self-Defense addresses and demonstrates the full range of Kaisho Goshin Budo Taiho Jitsu Ryu (Tokyo police self-defense). Learn specific techniques such as: The use of hands Throwing an opponent Attacking vital points with strikes and kicks The use of weapons (like the staff). This fascinating Jiujitsu book, designed as a training manual, also serves as a remarkable illustrated guide to the secret art of Japanese samurai self-defense.
