Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: In this postapocalyptic story of mystery, suspense, grief, and loss, a girl processes her mother’s death as a serial killer’s presence makes her already dangerous world even more deadly. The climate apocalypse has come and gone, and in the end it wasn't the temperature climbing or the waters rising. It was the trees. They created enough pollen to render the air unbreathable, and the world became overgrown. In the decades since the event known as the Turning, humanity has rebuilt, and Izabel has grown used to the airtight domes that now contain her life. She raises her young daughter, Cami, and attempts to make peace with her mother's death. She tries hard to be satisfied with this safe, prosperous new world, but instead she just feels stuck. And then the tranquility of her town is shattered. Someone—a serial killer—starts slashing through the domes at night, exposing people to the deadly pollen. At the same time, Cami begins sleep-talking, having whole conversations about the murders that she doesn't remember after she wakes. Izabel becomes fixated on the killer, on both tracking him down and understanding him. What could compel someone to take so many lives after years dedicated to sheer survival, with society finally flourishing again? Suspenseful and startling, but also poetic and written with a wry, observant humor, this “skillful blend of postapocalyptic science fiction, supernatural murder mystery, and domestic drama is unexpected and entirely engrossing” (Publishers Weekly).

Book excerpt: Daphne Dubois is the epitome of done. Done with dating. Done with the politics that have driven the world mad. Done with people. That’s why she spends her days hawking obscure treasures in an antique shop… and her nights entertaining the feral cat that frequents the back alley. Though she dreams of a simpler time in a far away place, she’s content to live her spinster life of solitude until she gets a fateful phone call from the next city over. When the voice on the other end tells her that her brother has gone missing under mysterious circumstances, she begrudgingly travels to meet with the detective to find out what they’ve learned. The only clues that have been found are a shrine to Jack the Ripper and an antique pocket watch that stopped working ages ago. With one wind of the timepiece, everything she thought she knew is turned on its head as she’s thrust into the adventure of a lifetime… and a heart-pounding race to stay one step ahead of the nineteenth century’s most notorious killer. This book contains a fictionalized account of a real-life serial killer. As such, it may contain situations which will be uncomfortable for some readers and inappropriate for readers under 18.

Book The Time is Now

Download or read book The Time is Now written by Christa Boske and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High school students, teachers, community members, and leaders come together in this innovative book to share the profound influence of artmaking and justice- oriented work. Authors paint vibrant images of being empowered and engaging in social change. Throughout their art-based meaning making, authors pose critical questions and unlock possibilities. Their first-tellings regarding the power of art provide readers with a lens to understand how they navigate injustices they endure and ways in which artmaking is a vehicle for transformation. Their artmaking is a call for change. Authors emphasize how artmaking bridges relationships and brings diverse community members together with purpose. Together, they engage in new understandings of self and other. Authors identify how their arts-based collaborations publicly showcase their justice-oriented work, but more importantly, promote possibility and hope. Youth explore how artmaking plays a vital role in promoting collective efficacy and engaging diverse communities in social transformation. Artmaking mobilizes people. And once activated, these authors utilize their newly cultivated communities to foster justice-oriented work throughout schools and communities. Their justice-oriented artmaking affords community members opportunities to respond in new ways by embracing community strengths and students’ lived experiences. This authentic collaboration empowers the artmaker and community to promote justice-oriented work and practices centered on diversity and inclusivity. ENDORSEMENTS: Reading Christa Boske’s The Time is Now is to find a profound sense of joy, wholeness, and energy to push out the borders of consciousness too tightly bound to the hyperrationalism of the workday world grounded in materialism and business transactions. The collected authors in Christa’s book give form to the spirit world, and its proclivity to allow the whole human being to embrace it, putter in it, explore it and find themselves in the journey. Artmaking is about self-discovery and emancipation. It’s a must read for anyone who wants re-establish a belief in themselves and in humanity. — Fenwick W. English, Professor and Department Chair, Ball State University Read this compelling new resource if you want to engage the next generation of youth activists in transforming our world. Truly, The Time is Now offers school leaders the most exciting, creative avenues for generating justice we’ve seen in a long time. This book rises to the challenge of being real when so much is at stake. — Margaret Grogan, Professor of Educational Leadership & Policy, Chapman University The Time is Now. A profound title that encapsulates so much regarding what we need in today's world. Woven through the various narratives, we accept the invitation to hear the stories of artists and explorers in their respective communities. An authentic confrontation of the many tensions that exist in our quest to seek out equity in the areas of diversity, inclusivity, and lived experiences. Voices that ring of radical change, the reconceptualization of freedom, and the agentive stance we are called to take to realize a higher state of being and a more noble existence. The stories remind us that the dream of transformation is our most compelling force- this book gives us a map of all that is possible if we work together. — Lillian McEnery-Benavente, Director and Professor, University of Houston Christa Boske’s edited book, The Time is Now, provides readers with a profound sense of what it means to live through injustice. The book, though, is not just a collection of heartbreaking stories, but a chronicle of triumphs, as the previously unheard are finally given a voice through artmaking. In chapter after deeply moving chapter, I was struck by the simultaneous vulnerability and bravery of the artists who shared their stories. What was clear, was that artmaking was a form of awakening for the artmakers: awakening to social justice issues, awakening to their ability to connect to the community through art and even awakening to their own value, which for so many, had been wholly unrecognized prior to this experience. This book comes at a time of deep reflection on equity, diversity and inclusion in our nation and the stories remind us that our children are absorbing these conversations. They are living these experiences and their voices are an essential part of the dialogue. — Habeebah R. Grimes, Chief Executive Officer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has a lot to offer the readers because it has a collection of poetry that is, I must say, second to none (I’ve been accepted into the poetry hall of fame), poetry that has a real meaning that will also take your mind to another level, yet a small collection of poetry that talks about so much. And if that’s not enough (need I go on?), most of my poems are just six lines, short and sweet. In fact, I truly believe that I have a poem that everybody can relate to, so what I’ve done to prove that is I’ve written an index of poems so you can browse through, just to see what this collection has to offer. Once again, though it’s a small collection (very few books of poetry offer that), but just as well, it will be good knowing what the poetry is talking about. I also wanted everyone to see how much variety it has to offer to the index. It can guide you if you’re looking for a certain type of poem, or if you just want to look and see what type of poems are there and what they’re talking about. Now I can’t tell you the thrills I get from reading some of these poems, so read them for yourself and let your mind explore. But now wait, I wanted to go a step farther, so I also wrote two short stories. The first one, I would say that it’s a heartfelt story that I’m sure you can relate to, and the second story is a mystery—full of glare, excitement and color, entertainment profound.
