They were to live with their grandmother, Momma Henderson, because their parents in California were divorcing. Momma owned a general store in the heart of the black area and sold lunches to workers all over town. During cotton season, the pickers left their lunch sacks at the store to be filled. Marguerite saw how the grueling, low-paid drudgery wore them down. Years later she would lash out against the stereotype of happy cotton pickers singing in the fields. Chapter 2 Momma’s son, Uncle Willie, made sure the children learned their lessons. Uncle Willie was dropped by a baby-sitter as an infant. This accident left his body twisted and one hand deformed. People tried not to look at him. He wore starched shirts and shined shoes. He tried to stand proud, but was the local scapegoat and butt of jokes. In a world where a strong black man could barely get by, Uncle Willie was resented because his family owned a store filled with shelves of food and other goods. One afternoon, he broke down when strangers asked to take his photo. Marguerite felt his pain at being stereotyped as a cripple. Though she read and enjoyed the works of many classical white and black writers, Marguerite fell in love with Shakespeare because the first line in Sonnet 29, “When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes. (Ch2, EPUB)”, expressed exactly how she felt, and how she knew Uncle Willie felt...

Her first principle of joy is that, whether working or playing, people should delight in what they do and live in the moment. To illustrate this, Winfrey relates how terrified she was when singer, Tina Turner, invited her to be a backup dancer for a show. She feared embarrassing herself, yet went up on the stage and found joy in dancing. Second, Winfrey has come to understand, despite her lifelong weight problems, food still should be a source of joy, as when she and her friends shared a memorable dinner at a trattoria in Rome. People who love chocolate, as she does, need not ban it from their lives, but instead eat small amounts and savor every moment of it. Finally, Winfrey learned to delight in her friends, such as her beloved, best friend, Gayle King, and her diet guru, Bob Greene. King, whom Winfrey met in 1976, both keeps her grounded and cheers her on. Greene guides her on the path of eating foods that are right for both her body and her spirit…

Book Hit Refresh

Download or read book Hit Refresh written by Satya Nadella and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “At the core, Hit Refresh, is about us humans and the unique quality we call empathy, which will become ever more valuable in a world where the torrent of technology will disrupt the status quo like never before.” – Satya Nadella from Hit Refresh “Satya has charted a course for making the most of the opportunities created by technology while also facing up to the hard questions.” – Bill Gates from the Foreword of Hit Refresh The New York Times bestseller Hit Refresh is about individual change, about the transformation happening inside of Microsoft and the technology that will soon impact all of our lives—the arrival of the most exciting and disruptive wave of technology humankind has experienced: artificial intelligence, mixed reality, and quantum computing. It’s about how people, organizations, and societies can and must transform and “hit refresh” in their persistent quest for new energy, new ideas, and continued relevance and renewal. Microsoft’s CEO tells the inside story of the company’s continuing transformation, tracing his own personal journey from a childhood in India to leading some of the most significant technological changes in the digital era. Satya Nadella explores a fascinating childhood before immigrating to the U.S. and how he learned to lead along the way. He then shares his meditations as a sitting CEO—one who is mostly unknown following the brainy Bill Gates and energetic Steve Ballmer. He tells the inside story of how a company rediscovered its soul—transforming everything from culture to their fiercely competitive landscape and industry partnerships. As much a humanist as engineer and executive, Nadella concludes with his vision for the coming wave of technology and by exploring the potential impact to society and delivering call to action for world leaders. “Ideas excite me,” Nadella explains. “Empathy grounds and centers me.” Hit Refresh is a set of reflections, meditations, and recommendations presented as algorithms from a principled, deliberative leader searching for improvement—for himself, for a storied company, and for society.

Book excerpt: Garry Kasparov's 1997 chess match against the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue was a watershed moment in the history of technology. It was the dawn of a new era in artificial intelligence: a machine capable of beating the reigning human champion at this most cerebral game. That moment was more than a century in the making, and in this breakthrough book, Kasparov reveals his astonishing side of the story for the first time. He describes how it felt to strategize against an implacable, untiring opponent with the whole world watching, and recounts the history of machine intelligence through the microcosm of chess, considered by generations of scientific pioneers to be a key to unlocking the secrets of human and machine cognition. Kasparov uses his unrivaled experience to look into the future of intelligent machines and sees it bright with possibility. As many critics decry artificial intelligence as a menace, particularly to human jobs, Kasparov shows how humanity can rise to new heights with the help of our most extraordinary creations, rather than fear them. Deep Thinking is a tightly argued case for technological progress, from the man who stood at its precipice with his own career at stake.
