The day his beautiful Puerto Rican mother Rosa Sanchez took him home was a day of celebration. He had beaten the odds and been given a chance at life. Fast forward 19 years later, and Javy is fresh out of high school. He lives in Orlando, FL with his mother and her neurotic orange Pomeranian, Roberto. Javy spends a lot of his time with his best friend, Seth Watson, a troublemaker with a carefree disposition. Javy is motivated to move to California and become a film maker, but Seth has no direction. What Seth does have is a secret, a secret that will cause their friendship to come to a screeching halt. Meanwhile, Javy meets a girl named Alison in a coffee shop and experiences a deep infatuation for her he has never experienced before. While contemplating how he will make his move, he meets his mom's new friend, Lana, at a dinner party and has a secret fling with her that sets in motion a series of chaotic events that will change the lives of everyone around him forever. In the middle of it all is the anchor which keeps his mother grounded, the aging Pomeranian Roberto. A sudden change in Roberto's behavior leads to a discovery that further unravels the small family at its seams. I Know This World Is Killing You is a book about love and lust, life and death, the price we pay for the secrets we keep, and how the ways in which we process pain determines how high we fly or how low we go.

Download or read book The Forgiving Dream written by John Harrison Taylor and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago, I saw a thirteen-year-old boy with the disease of Progeria, in which the aging process is accelerated in children, being interviewed on television. He looked like a little old man despite his tender years, yet he seemed to transcend his affliction. His voice had a musical, flute-like quality, and I had never seen anyone so full of joy and focused in the moment. I was later to learn that what emanated from that boy is typical of children with Progeria. I wondered what it must have been like in ancient times for such a child. Would he have been feared? Revered? Abandoned? Or put to death as evila devil child? Then, in an instant, I believe the Divine gave me the concept of a story that takes place in such ancient times with such a boy who becomes known as a great and wise healer at its center. The people think hes a little old man, but then its discovered hes really a twelve-year-old boy. The Forgiving Dream is the first book in The Forgiving Dream Trilogy.

Book excerpt: “Constant Words Awakening the World (醒世恒言 Xing Shi Heng Yan) is the third of a trilogy of widely celebrated Ming dynasty (1368–1644) vernacular story collections, compiled and edited by Feng Menglong. The first compilation, called Gujin Xiaoshuo (古今小説) (Stories Old and New), which is sometimes also referred to as Yushi Mingyan (喻世明言) (Clear Words to Understand the World) was published in Suzhou in 1620. The second publication was called Jingshi Tongyan (警世通言) (Warnings of the World). These three collections, often referred to as Sanyan (三言, "Three Words") because of the character yan (言) found at the end of each title, each contain 40 stories. Xingshi Hengyan is considered to be a huaben (话本), that is, short novel or novella. The huaben genre has been around since the Song dynasty (960-1279). The huaben genre includes collections of short stories, historical stories, and even stories from Confucian classics.

Download or read book Folk Tales of Napoleon Napoleonder from the Russian written by Honore de Balzac and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the literature that has its origin in the life and career of a great man may be grouped and classified under two heads: history and biography. The part that relates to the man's actions, and to the influence that such actions have had in shaping the destinies of peoples and states, belongs in the one class; while the part that derives its interest mainly from the man's personality, and deals chiefly with the mental and moral characteristics of which his actions were the outcome, goes properly into the other. The value of the literature included in these two classes depends almost wholly upon truth; that is, upon the precise correspondence of the statements made with the real facts of the man's life and career. History is worse than useless if it does not accurately chronicle and describe events; and biography is valueless and misleading if it does not truly set forth individual character. There is, however, a kind of great-man literature in which truth is comparatively unimportant, and that is the literature of popular legend and tradition. Whether it purports to be historical or biographical, or both, it derives its interest and value from the light that it throws upon the temperament and character of the people who originate it, rather than from the amount of truth contained in the statements that it makes about the man. The folk-tales of Napoleon Bonaparte herewith presented, if judged from the viewpoint of the historian or the biographer, are absurdly and grotesquely untrue; but to the anthropologist and the student of human nature they are extremely valuable as self-revelations of national character; and even to the historian and the biographer they have some interest as evidences of the profoundly deep impression made by Napoleon's personality upon two great peoples—the Russians and the French. The first story, which is entitled "Napoleonder," is of Russian origin, and was put into literary form, or edited, by Alexander Amphiteatrof of St. Petersburg. It originally appeared as a feuilleton in the St. Petersburg "Gazette" of December 13, 1901. As a characteristic specimen of Russian peasant folk-lore, it seems to me to have more than ordinary interest and value. The treatment of the supernatural may seem, to Occidental readers, rather daring and irreverent, but it is perfectly in harmony with the Russian peasant's anthropomorphic conception of Deity, and should be taken with due allowance for the educational limitations of the story-teller and his auditors. The Russian muzhik often brings God and the angels into his folk-tales, and does so without the least idea of treating them disrespectfully. He makes them talk in his own language because he has no other language; and if the talk seems a little grotesque and irreverent, it is due to the low level of the narrator's literary culture, and not to any intention, on his part, of treating God and the angels with levity. The whole aim of the story is a moral and religious one. The narrator is trying to show that sympathy and mercy are better than selfish ambition, and that war is not only immoral but irrational. The conversation between God, the angels, and the Devil is a mere prologue, intended to bring Napoleon and Ivan-angel on the stage and lay the foundation of the plot. The story-teller's keen sense of fun and humor is shown in many little touches, but he never means to be irreverent. The whole legend is set forth in the racy, idiomatic, highly elliptical language of the common Russian muzhik, and is therefore extremely difficult of translation; but I have tried to preserve, as far as possible, the spirit and flavor of the original.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erik-Christian Denman was a youthful genius-general in the Royal Danish Army who went rogue after the Danish occupation by Nazis in WWII. Leading a group of elite, saboteurs, and assassins to uncountable and legendary victories, in the final months of 1944, he made a series of strange decisions that seemingly put him and his men in mortal danger. With him as a brilliant militarist and fearsome combatant coveted by nation-states across Europe, his men wondered if Danish General Denman was a gifted warrior who would lead them to continued victories or a genius madman who would get them killed. With questions haunting him about life that man had yet to answer and might never answer, General Denman was not certain he was the godsend saint people believed him to be or the spawn of Satan he feared he might be. In December of 1944, in the midst of battle, his men realized that they had a very, very dangerous man on their hands. Deliberately idealized and idyllic to depict his diametrically opposed selves graphically, General Denman's cast of characters are likeable men and women to be enjoyed and admired as they live through his saga with him, often pulling him in opposing directions or supporting him lovingly. Plagued by remorseful doubt and whipped to the core, body and soul, General Denman struggled to continue to do his dirty job. While he performed superbly, like us, he was unaware of how he had impacted their lives. General Erik-Christian Denman made his way among people who did not understand him, with his God, Who did not understand him, in a world that did not understand him, like the rest of us. Eventually, the disconnected pieces of the puzzle of his life formed a complete picture. Though he was once tormented by the unwelcome assaults of despair and resignation, his end of days was an affirmation of hope and a celebration of his virtue.
