Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the hit website, Sheltie Planet, introduces you to the smart, sensitive, and spirited nature of Shetland Sheepdogs. Built on expert advice and rounded with personal stories and photos, Shelties: The Complete Pet Owner's Guide is the ultimate user-friendly guide to raising, maintaining, and training the furriest—and smartest—of small dog breeds. This 150-page illustrated guide covers everything the pet owner needs to know: - Types of Shelties - Naming Your Sheltie - Ultimate Puppy Checklist - Growth & Development in Pictures - Step-by-Step Grooming & Bathing Tutorials - Five Stages of Dog Training - House Training and Obedience - How to Manage Excessive Barking - Socialization & Sheltie Games - Nutrition & Oral Health - Inherited Disease & DNA Tests - Benefits & Timing of De-Sexing - Fun with Dog Photography About Shelties Shetland Sheepdogs were originally bred as working dogs in Scotland in the 1700s. Today, they retain strong instincts for herding and hyper-vigilance, as well as being eager and highly trainable. They’re an agile and active breed, yet unlike many working Collies, their small size means they don’t seek to run around all day long. Shelties are quite happy with an hour of off-leash exercise, then home to snuggle up with the family as loyal and affectionate lap dogs. Sophisticated, playful, and idiosyncratic, Shelties excel in many roles: as service dogs, in the show ring, in agility, and as photogenic canine actors. They’re the sixth smartest dog breed on the planet, capable of learning hundreds of words, responding to facial expressions, and even social gestures like pointing (a skill that’s beyond chimpanzees). Armed with this inside information on Sheltie intelligence, you can teach your dog how to play hide-and-seek, perform amazing tricks, and even categorize and tidy her toys. Shelties: The Complete Pet Owner’s Guide is a labor of love, detailing every aspect of caring for your pet from puppyhood to old age. Enjoyed by new Sheltie adopters and long-time fans alike, you’ll revel in the 140+ gorgeous Sheltie photos from pet owners all over the world, while following the story of Casale’s own two English Shelties, Howard and Piper.

  • Publisher : Ballantine Books
  • Release : 2009-02-19
  • ISBN : 0307489183

Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Beth returns to Alpine Grove after an unfortunate series of events, just in time for the 10-year high school reunion she vowed not to attend. But her vow is no match for a sneaky former cheerleader who tricks her into going. While she's there, she runs into the one person she hoped to never see again: Drew Emery. Drew is just as easy to talk to as ever, and maybe she shouldn't have said all those terrible things to him so long ago. But everyone deserves a second chance, right?

Book The Rebel League

Download or read book The Rebel League written by Ed Willes and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-03-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wildest seven years in the history of hockey The Rebel League celebrates the good, the bad, and the ugly of the fabled WHA. It is filled with hilarious anecdotes, behind the scenes dealing, and simply great hockey. It tells the story of Bobby Hull’ s astonishing million-dollar signing, which helped launch the league, and how he lost his toupee in an on-ice scrap. It explains how a team of naked Birmingham Bulls ended up in an arena concourse spoiling for a brawl. How the Oilers had to smuggle fugitive forward Frankie “Seldom” Beaton out of their dressing room in an equipment bag. And how Mark Howe sometimes forgot not to yell “Dad!” when he called for his teammate father, Gordie, to pass. There’s the making of Slap Shot, that classic of modern cinema, and the making of the virtuoso line of Hull, Anders Hedberg, and Ulf Nilsson. It began as the moneymaking scheme of two California lawyers. They didn’ t know much about hockey, but they sure knew how to shake things up. The upstart WHA introduced to the world 27 new hockey franchises, a trail of bounced cheques, fractious lawsuits, and folded teams. It introduced the crackpots, goons, and crazies that are so well remembered as the league’s bizarre legacy. But the hit-and-miss league was much more than a travelling circus of the weird and wonderful. It was the vanguard that drove hockey into the modern age. It ended the NHL’s monopoly, freed players from the reserve clause, ushered in the 18-year-old draft, moved the game into the Sun Belt, and put European players on the ice in numbers previously unimagined. The rebel league of the WHA gave shining stars their big-league debut and others their swan song, and provided high-octane fuel for some spectacular flameouts. By the end of its seven years, there were just six teams left standing, four of which—the Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton Oilers, and Hartford Whalers—would wind up in the expanded NHL.
