Book excerpt: This book may be the first book ever to claim to be written by a dog. It is questionable that a dog with only six years of experience on the planet could learn to love God and at the same time express such strong commitment to making everyone aware that all dogs have rights. Livy shares, in detail, her life experiences, including her love life as well as her many questions about life and God. Actually, her questions parallel the logical questions a child would have, along with the frustration of not being able to get answers to questions which would appear important to a child but not so important to an adult. This book brings out an awareness of what a dog goes through in a life that many people just take for granted. Livy, the author, brings up the fact that dogs are thinking, living beings, created by God. Livy learns to cope with many facets of life by trusting in God and prayer. So ask yourself: how many dogs with only six years of experience could have such faith in God at such an early age. Livy is remarkable throughout the book as she points out situations around her that make little or no sense to her. For example, she has a real issue with why dogs chase squirrels and cats. Livy describes her experiences, from adoption to her life with her new parents. Her owner, whom she affectionately calls Mom, leaves the TV on gospel stations whenever Livy is left home alone. Livy learns about God and seeks answers about how Gods love applies to her life. Livy is on a mission to make people aware of what goes through a dogs mind as events happen. She wants people to know that dogs have rights.

Book excerpt: When fifteen-year-old Lorraine Meriwether moves to Ocean Beach, California, to live with her dad for the summer, extreme loneliness is the worst she must deal with. Then a way-too-old American-Eagle-model guy, Harold Godwin, decides he can't stay away from her, which leads to a series of events that expose his real fangs, his real mind control powers, and his real age. While the sun is up, she cultivates a normal life of walking dogs, making new friends, and just being beachy. After the sun goes down, Lorraine explores her own super powers while Harold weaves magical stories of being captive in the medieval army of England's enemy, Duke William of Normandy. As both lives collide, Lorraine is forced to choose between them. No matter how much we wish it, life is not lived in the in between of eventide.

Book Adolescent Psychological Development

Download or read book Adolescent Psychological Development written by David Moshman and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The huge and fractured literature on adolescence challenges both students and scholars. For students there is too much to learn and too little coherence across topics to enable deeper understanding. For scholars, there are few integrative visions to connect minitheories, research programs, and practical concerns. In the first edition of this advanced text, Moshman provided a constructivist synthesis of the literatures of cognitive, moral, and identity development, from the classic universalist theories of Piaget, Kohlberg, and Erikson through the more pluralist research and theorizing of the late 20th century. Without assuming any prior knowledge of psychology, he introduced and coordinated basic concepts to enable students to wrestle with the questions of concern to experts and help experts see those concerns from a larger perspective. In this thoroughly updated second edition, Moshman develops his conceptualization of advanced psychological development in adolescence and early adulthood and proposes--in a new chapter--a conception of rational moral identity as a developmental ideal. Unlike the prototypical changes of early childhood, advanced psychological development cannot be understood as progress through universal stages to a universally achieved state of maturity. Progress is possible, however, through rational processes of reflection, coordination, and social interaction.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Susan Wilson is back with another signature heartwarming novel—one that begs the question: Can a dog lead the way to finding one's humanity? After spending years in prison for a crime she didn’t intend to commit, Rose Collins is suddenly free. Someone who knows about the good work she has done—training therapy dogs while serving time—has arranged for her early release. This mysterious benefactor has even set her up with a job in the coastal Massachusetts community of Gloucester, on the edge of Dogtown, a place of legend and, for the first time since Rosie's whole world came crashing down, hope. There she works to rebuild her life with the help of Shadow, a stray dog who appears one rainy night and refuses to leave Rose’s side. Meghan Custer is a wheelchair-bound war veteran who used to be hopeless, too. Living at home with her devoted but stifling parents felt a lot like being in prison, in fact. But ever since she was matched with a service dog named Shark, who was trained in a puppy-to-prisoner rehabilitation program, Meghan has a brand new outlook. Finally, she can live on her own. Go to work. And maybe, with Shark by her side, even find love again. Two strong women on a journey toward independence whose paths collide in extraordinary ways. Two dogs who somehow manage to save them both. A tale of survival and a testament to the human spirit, The Dog I Loved is an emotional and inspiring novel that no reader will soon forget.

Book Empowerment Training for Your Power Dog

Download or read book Empowerment Training for Your Power Dog written by Dawn Antoniak-Mitchell and published by Dogwise Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her latest book, Dawn Antoniak-Mitchell turns to the subject of managing and training what she labels “Power Dogs.” This grouping includes dozens of breeds who were originally bred to hunt game or to protect people and their property, many of whom were also employed as fighting dogs. These are physically strong dogs relative to their size, usually with a mix of ancient Mastiff and Bulldog ancestry, and some have more recently been bred to Terriers as well. These dogs tend to be protective, tenacious, and often exhibit aggression toward other dogs, but at the same time are playful, energetic and smart.

This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He can retrieve—but can he sit, lie down and stay?
Sporting dog breeds can be relatively easy to train to do what they have been bred to do be it retrieve, point, flush—even act as a decoy to attract game! In addition, most sporting breeds have a gregarious personality and love people and other dogs. These attributes make these dogs very popular pets, but at the same time present all sorts of problems when they are not working in the field. Have you ever tried to ask your Lab to sit and stay near a pond with the ducks? Why is it that Goldens are notorious for jumping up on people (not to mention other dogs) when greeting them? Does your sporting dog eat every smelly item he encounters before you can stop him? In this new book, author Dawn Antoniak-Mitchell offers answers to solving and preventing the often surprising set of problems that owners of sporting dogs encounter at home and in their local communities.

You will learn
• Many of the overly friendly traits associated with sporting dogs can cause problems with other people and other dogs if you cannot control your dog’s enthusiastic (and sometimes obnoxious) greeting behaviors.
• How to make yourself more interesting than birds, as impossible as that might seem, to make walks and outings more pleasant for all involved.
• How to train a strong “leave it” behavior to keep your dog from eating things that might be dangerous.

Praise for From Birdbrained to Brilliant
Having bred and trained sporting dogs for almost forty years, Dawn’s ideas are spot on for understanding that the mindset and work ethics of sporting dogs is based around them being “people dogs.” As a tracking judge, trainer and exhibitor I can attest that Dawn is correct when she says training sporting dogs is “an investment worth making.” Just like making an investment in this book!
Ed Presnall, noted trainer and judge, author of Component Training for TDX and four other books on the subject of tracking

From Birdbrained to Brilliant gave me more insight into my beloved retrievers than anything I’ve read in my 25+ years of working with assistance dogs. Ms. Antoniak-Mitchell provides a treasure trove of information for those of us who love sporting dogs. As entertaining as it is illuminating, this book has earned a center spot in my library!
Jennifer Arnold, author Through a Dog’s Eyes and In a Dog’s Heart

Hunt, point and/or retrieve yourself a copy of this book. Working with your sporting breed dog’s natural traits instead of against them is what From Birdbrained to Brilliant is all about. I’m so excited to see a down to earth and practical book that gives clear training and management exercises for field bred dogs.
Inga From, CPDT-KSA, owner Positive Gun Dogs of Minnesota

FIRST OF ALL who could resist this title? I work with all breeds and each group brings something a little different to the table. Dawn’s knowledge of sporting dogs is going to be invaluable to you because her insights into their instincts will improve your training and your dogs will live better lives because you will have learned how to understand and communicate better with them.
